APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday November 21, 2003 (MJD 52965) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Kleinman (swing) Dan Long Pete Newman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Through cloud cover of variable thickness, we finished 3 plates ( 7 1488, 3 1664, 1 1588 ), and got signal on another 2 1107. Note that 1664, the seguetest plate, showed no signal in SoS. We called it done in 6 20 minute exposures based on the guider efficiency and signal got on previous plates. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- 22:15Z: One of the iop session did not start due to: /p/astroda/v14_47/bin/dscRun[429]: 2343 Memory fault(coredump) 22:51Z: When endDrifting bias, I got the following message. Since I was doing a bias, I don't understand why the focusLoop was trying to run at all. I did not issue to start a focusLoop during this biasDrift. 2003-11-21 22:50:51Z: Error stopping focus loop: couldn't open "/astrolog/52965/focus-52965.par": Permission denied Spectros did not require any adjustments. Done? 04:05Z gotoField, guide stars on slew Pete's guider stopped running following a large scaleChange Stopping and restarting the guider got it going again. Large scale and rotation fluctuations seen since two of the fibers were sometimes not being used (called bad) during acquisition, and those two fibers represented more than a third of the area of the plate. 04:31Z preCalib 04:38Z Science start 23415 SoS doesn't even acknowledge a science exposure was taken much less give an (S/N)^2. Got two 20 minute exposures at 80+% efficiency The third exposure was between 65% and 80% efficiency The fourth exposure was between 55% and 70% efficiency Seeing got significantly worse half way through number 4 (3+ arcsec) Seeing improved again for 5th exposure ~70% efficiency Taking a set of postCals here since we have no SoS help and radial velocity measurements benefit from good arcs. Sixth exposure ~70% efficiency. We got 6 20 minute exposures on this plate and are calling it done. We await word from Brian et al confirming this. 07:39Z instChange Cartridge 4 1252 taurus63 ??.? ??.? 1.36 1.24 07:43Z gotoField, needed FK5 to acquire this Taurus plate. Not unexpected since we acquired at 82 degress elevation. 08:01Z preCalib 08:08Z Science start 23426 Clouds thicken, seeing worsens, no signal in 20 minutes :( Decide to move on to survey plate as one is now available. 08:30Z instChange Cartridge 1 1588 chunk75 27.2 17.0 39.8 27.1 08:34Z gotoField, guide stars on slew with cleared offsets.
