Left: -2.82 +/- 0.39 Right: -2.19 +/- 0.39 The rest of afternoon checkout went with only a few minor problems. The sdsshost reboot was delayed because the sdsshost tape back-up ran late. I waited as long as possible, but eventually had to reboot before the back-up completed. It will have to be done again. The guider Mac wasn't reading the right driver file for the engineering camera. After Craig refreshed my memory as to which file corresponded to the existing camera, we reloaded the driver, and all was well. No spectro collimation today because the engineering camera was mounted. Night: ------ Pointing model: --------------- Eng camera mounted. We went for fk5 star near 120,55 (rotator at zero): track/pterr=(noobj,nocor) 120,55 obs /rotty=obj /rota=0 Focus found at 250, seeing 3.7" it's variable at the moment, but not bad (M1 is not in equilibrum, ambient temp 11.7C). Checking optical axis position on eng camera. rot, Star x,y position 0 351.7 350.6 90 285.9 224.0 180 418.2 162.9 270 478.3 289.8 ------------- all/4: 384 257 Very good - optical axis at the center :). We went back to zero with rotator, star position: 343, 348 , now from sopGui we applied offset: RA DEC -40", 0" star found at: 475, 349 (~30 pixel to the right) 40", 0" offsets reset. 0",-40" star found at: 340, 479 (~30 pixel to the bottom) Mirrors seem to be in equlibrum now, we shifted focus from 250 to 600 and took engcam image (see ~jurek/gimg0033.fits) the donut is bottom heavy. M1 has to be colimated, but we started with a small (35) pointing model. We didn't axis init and the beginning, so first point didn't show in eng cam image. While taking that pointing model French and Larry came in. After a short talk we found out, that mirror laterals cannot be extended (or not very much) in lateral axies since they are very close to the bumpers. Taking that into account we decided that collimation has to be done in a first place since if it will happen that the mirror laterals have to be exteneded in the process than it would be better to have French and Larry on the site. The pointing model seems to be good (errors below 1.65"). M1 collimation: --------------- While Howard was dealing with new pointing model, Steph and Jurek changed eng. cam to imager. 04:40Z we started a scan on 82 N, lambda 128 (in meridian). What we've seen were bottom heavy donuts in all dewars and coma elongated with coma tail to the right in dewar 1 and up in dewar 6. We stopped the drift and wanted to home and relax M1 before collimation. On the slew to 121,70 we noticed alt too large to correct fiducial error, the fiducial was forced, but still while trying to move the telescope up and down we've seen the same error. Fiducial was forced again and suddenly ... 05:08Z we found the telescope with flat field closed at az =121, alt=1.2 position! Well since MCP was used to move the telescope, we cannot tell what command was used but we think it was just our error (a wrong alt typed in MCP), which moved the telescope to alt 1.2, not a real problem. We initialized the axis and moved the telescope to 121,70 - that worked fine. M1 was homed and relaxed using the newrelax procedure. M2 was homed. MIGs were taken and they appeared to be the same as those taken at the beginning of the night. Having done that we parked the telescope with track comand at meridian/equator and focused. All star images were horizontaly extended - since it might have been rotator problem we scanStriped 82 N 150 (which basicaly placed the telescope at the same place as the track command) and used skippy to find out if there is a rotator problem. Star images on 82 N scan looked more rounded than those we've seen on track command. We decided to stay at 82 N while collimating. SetFocusloop failed - teamster were not transfered, we fixed that and got focusloop running as well as seeingrun. We run skippy but the rot THETAF correction was 0.2 degreee! we should have seen this on screen. Well, correcting for rotator made images even more elongated. Then we found out that skippy sees only 2 stars! Than might explain why rot correction it found was so big. We are already late in night (07:00Z), we might not do everything this night :(. At this point we read in the new pointing model taken at the beginning of the night to see if with the new model, skippy can find the stars. Hmm - apparently tcc didn't see the new pointing model (skippy didn't see more than 2 stars again), than Dan called and he told us that tcc des not see the new pointing model. Typo again! We read in the new pointing model and verified that tcc got it (show block telmod). Also we've seen star imgages jumped on screens in the reading direction. Skippy saw 30 stars this time and all was in spec. 08:18Z We are back in collimation procedure. To make a short test we parked the telescope at equator/meridian: TRACK 0,57.22 MOUNT /ROTA=90 /ROTTY=MOUNT the star images were AGAIN elongated horizontaly (which we didn't see while scanStripping - why?). Then we moved the telescope with the scanStripe command, so we have skippy to check rotator position for us while we are scanning at almost parked position. Run 4817 skippy is happy, so something is going wrong with that tracking (still we don't know why, but we are happy with skippy results). Unfortunately seeing went up - we had to stop at this point (over 2"). 08:40Z swapping instruments - to eng camera. The new pointing model shows: SYS$SYSDEVICE:[TCC.PTERR]PTERR_20040910.DAT;3 T 34 1.5270 IE -228.2656 IA -197.5047 AN +10.8557 AW -27.1858 =HWCA2 +0.2820 =HWSA2 -0.5906 =HNCA1 -0.3545 =HNSA1 -1.4711 CA +39.1101 PZZ1 -136.0917 =ACEC +1.3180 =ACES -0.6258 =TX -1.3770 END [EOB] We talked to Dan, French and Larry and found out the following: We actualy don't know which direction to go with the telescope tilt and because there are two tilt adjusting points at the telescope, aligned NW, SW not NS, EW - that means changing one of them will change telescope tilt in two direction. So, why don't we: 1. get a star image with eng camera and new pointing model, check where the optical axis is 2. if it's close to the center, let's change AN,AW coefficients in the new model to zero, see where the star image shifted 3. start to tilt the telescope and with gcam dofind see which direction the star image shifts, changing tilt directions the way the whole process will move the star to the eng cam ccd center. That was done with Lary, French and Howard at the telescope and Jurek checking tilt results with gcam dofind commands. 1. Star image (with the new model AN=+10, AW=-27) appeared to be very close to the ccd center: 383, 256 +- 6, +-4 pixels respectively. 2. New (short) model with AN,AW coefficients set to zero and copied into wnjk, model block set in telrun then star image taken: star image center was found at 476,267 (which is right or East from the ccd center - if I'm correct, see above for where star images were shifted when RA and DEC offsets were applied). 3. So we basicaly needed a tilt in East/left direction. Which was done first by lenghtening NW belvil(??), but in the same time star was moving left (toward the ccd center) it was moving down as well. So after 2/3 of required shifht in East we stopped and applied a tilt with NW belvil lenghtening it as well, which moved a star North/up and left. It wasn't done in two simple moves but using a zigzag path because after each move the preload (don't ask me what is it) had to be reset, star position was changed and so on. But finaly we've got a star close to the center at: 390, 261 (7 and 5 pixels off). To confirm that we moved the telescope to two different positions and found stars at: 393, 276 388, 265 We couldn't get more star positions because the ln2 dewars got empty (we apparently lost a lot of LN2 when the telescope was moved down to alt 1 deg - see above). So we had to refill the dewars. The new pointing model need to be taken tomorrow, but at the moment we can say that: shortening NW belvil will shift the star on ccd image right and slightly up. shortening SW belvil will shift the star image right and slightly down. 12:39Z CCD02 temp is rising. Critical error was sent by the system. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4812 04:47Z 04:53Z 82 S 129.36 130.91 24 ignore 4813 05:52Z 06:09Z 82 S 128.44 151.09 42 engineering 4814 06:11Z 07:56Z 82 S 151.45 -182.42 191 ignore 4815 08:00Z 08:14Z 82 N -181.34 -177.84 37 ignore 4816 08:18Z 08:23Z 82 N -185.00 -185.00 21 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4814 65 4 2 -20.600 0.000 3.400 0.000 -0.15995 180 57 4815 12 4 30 -2.300 0.959 0.700 0.444 0.01631 180 57 4815 21 4 47 -5.100 0.122 0.600 0.132 0.01686 180 57 4817 10 4 44 -7.100 0.136 0.500 0.145 0.01709 180 57 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4814 75 1 57 360 14 10.371 0.370 -0.400 0.397 0.00135 4814 75 1 57 360 21 10.681 0.240 -0.531 0.359 0.00178 4814 75 1 57 360 21 10.605 0.284 -0.521 0.330 0.00175 4814 75 1 57 360 19 10.470 0.391 -0.287 0.366 0.00096 4814 75 1 57 360 15 10.511 0.378 -0.472 0.504 0.00159 4814 92 1 57 360 9 0.567 0.149 -0.527 0.323 0.00177 4814 92 1 57 360 18 0.554 0.100 -0.345 0.494 0.00116 4814 92 1 57 360 22 0.704 0.200 -0.202 0.446 0.00068 4814 92 1 57 360 18 0.557 0.272 -0.528 0.375 0.00177 4814 92 1 57 360 18 0.282 0.321 -0.426 0.352 0.00143 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 28433, plate -9999 ------- 00:06 28433 0.0 bias 00:12 28434 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:16Z 63 27 8 265 (W) 395 - 23:48Z 64 28 10 221 (SW) 430 - 00:20Z 63 27 6 203 (SSW) 397 - 00:52Z 60 26 1 236 (SW) 429 - 01:24Z 55 24 2 227 (SW) 404 - 02:13Z 55 22 1 92 (E) 358 - 02:45Z 54 23 9 105 (ESE) 396 - 03:17Z 54 23 9 107 (ESE) 388 - 03:49Z 53 21 13 114 (ESE) 399 - 04:21Z 54 20 13 80 (E) 329 - 04:51Z 55 17 13 90 (E) 288 - 05:22Z 54 16 13 79 (E) 245 - 05:52Z 54 18 11 91 (E) 299 - 06:22Z 54 18 9 93 (E) 277 - 06:52Z 55 20 11 105 (ESE) 351 - 07:22Z 55 20 14 108 (ESE) 320 - 07:53Z 54 20 13 126 (SE) 345 - 08:25Z 55 19 13 135 (SE) 325 - 08:58Z 55 17 15 136 (SE) 299 - 09:30Z 54 15 15 146 (SE) 253 - 10:03Z 54 14 11 154 (SSE) 269 - 10:35Z 53 14 8 176 (S) 257 - 11:07Z 53 13 5 179 (S) 254 - 11:40Z 53 13 5 151 (SSE) 295 - 12:12Z 53 15 6 174 (S) 303 - 12:44Z 53 15 4 165 (SSE) 268 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:10Z Fans on 01:30Z Telescope open. 11:55Z Telescope closed, spectro dewars refilled, fans off. ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_140_0 Watcher: v2_29_0 MCP: v5_25_0 TPM: tpm_v2_42_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v1_93 SoS: v4_10_7 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.5280 0.5280 Axial B 0.7140 0.7150 Axial C 1.0330 1.0310 Trans D -8.6890 -8.6860 Lateral E 11.5443 11.5062 Lateral F 13.0810 13.0302 GALILS Commanded: 4850. -3650. 4050. -6150. 40200. 39150.
