APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday December 19, 2004 (MJD 53359) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta, Pete Newman. ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Two plates finished (2063, 2083) and good data on another (2069), then imaging on SDSS strips 23S (-29 <= lambda <= -20) and 21S (-66 <= lambda <= -24). We had an altitude axis abort during opening, and a recurrence of the recent problem with the spectrograph monitors freezing. The spectrograph DA crate needs rebooting. None caused data loss. NB: Day crew please note: the imager is mounted on the telescope, ready for shake-up imager calibrations this coming afternoon. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Pre-flight checks ----------------- We only checked the flat and arc image positions for the spectrographs this afternoon, as the focus was adjusted yesterday at almost an identical temperature. While slewing during enclosure removal, the altitude axis aborted at 22deg moving up. An axis init and track command solved it. Is this related to a PLC interlock? We think we saw this yesterday moving down. The azimuth 137deg fiducial was not read moving in either direction. We passed the 30,000th set of spectral exposures during check-out! Night ----- Photometric sky, but bright moon, so we start with spectroscopy. 00:39Z Plate 2063, cartridge 2. Done in 7 exposures, 8100s, when combined with data from MJD 53358. SEGUEFaint requiring (S/N)^2 >= 50 in all cameras. FK5 found during bright twilight some distance west of cleared offsets. Seeing is excellent. Guide fiber 3 is seeing a double star. We obtained midCals after the first four science exposures, at the approximate time of transit. 03:58Z Plate 2069, cartridge 3. SEGUEFaint requiring (S/N)^2 >= 50 in all cameras. Guide stars found once offsets were cleared. The S/N for camera b1 reported by SoS seemed very low compared to the other cameras, so following recent discussions in the SEGUE phone-con, we will use camera b2 to judge when we have sufficient S/N. Seeing became variable, degrading to > 2arcsec FWHM during the 6th exposure, reducing S/N. postCalibs taken. During read-out of the last science exposure for plate 2069, exposure number 30021, the sp1 monitor showed blue almost to the bottom, but the last 1cm of the monitor showed normal display. However, sp2's monitor also seemed frozen, so we think the blue was overwriting the privious image. In any case, we elected to continue without the monitors while we could. A PR was filed against astroda hardware. The spectrograph DA crate needs rebooting before starting operations tomorrow (MJD 53361). 07:06Z Plate 2083, cartridge 6. SDSS. Done in 3 exposures, 2800s. FK5 needed, but found from cleared offsets with offsetADR -10 10 as last night. We then switched to imaging for the rest of the night. See sections below for details. endNight is running as this log is being completed. The imager is mounted on the telescope ready for the afternoon shake-up calibrations. We issued cc stopfillseq/startfillseq commands to all cameras after moving up from alt=5 on closing. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5077 22:55Z 23:31Z 100 O 141.80 150.81 74 ignore 5078 08:39Z 08:59Z 23 S -31.29 -26.40 47 ignore 5079 09:01Z 09:45Z 23 S -30.72 -19.72 87 science Strip 23S 5080 09:47Z 12:41Z 21 S -67.77 -24.28 304 science Strip 21S 5081 12:43Z 12:59Z 100 O -10.49 -6.44 39 bias T-bars unlatched ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Seeing quality as reported by seeingRun.
