APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday October 2, 2005 (MJD 53646) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek Steph Snedden guests: Bruce Gillespie Gretchen Van Doren Bruce Balick (UW) and dinner guests ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Supernova Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- o Lots of clouds. o Imaging on 82 S attempted, with eventual success. Run 5680 probably isn't worth reducing because of thick clouds. Run 5681 was more successful, although there were some thinner clouds throughout. Good data on 82 S from lambda -155.5 to lambda -131. o Attempted u5 uLeak imager calibration, but the script failed partway through. Mamoru was contacted. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ----- The afternoon started with iop blowing up on the pad for lack of disk space. After being gently chastised last night by Fritz for not availing myself of /sled on 'files2, I did so. Here is what has been transferred to /sled (keeping the same directory structure): /data/photo/53639 /data/astro/53639 /data/photo/fields/53639 /data/photo/frames/53639 ..... /data/mt/53629 /data/mt/53630 /data/mt/53631 /data/mt/53632 /data/mt/53634 /data/mt/53635 /data/mt/53636 /data/mt/53637 /data/mt/53638 /data/mt/53639 /data/mt/53640 /data/mt/53641 /data/mt/53642 /data/mt/53643 sdssfiles2 /sled is now 39% used sdssfiles1 now has 52% used sdsshost2 now has 72% used The rest of afternoon checkout was uneventful. Spectro focus was checked, but not adjusted. Night: ----- We started the night by sitting under the plume of moisture provided by tropical storm Otis. 01:46Z Otis clouds looked like they would be sticking around, so Mike set up to do imager cals (uLeak for u5). 03:29Z We had some sucker holes, but radar return nearby kept us closed. We continued with the imager cals. 04:18Z The imager cal script failed at exposure 23 in the uLeak script. Details are in the problems section. Mamoru was also contacted about the problem. At this point the sky showed a promise of staying mostly clear, so we decided to give up on the imager cal and open. The uLeak measurement should probably be started fresh on another cloudy night, once the problem is understood. 05:00Z We mounted the imager and went on-sky for SN imaging on 82 S. Details are in the imaging section. 06:24Z We closed. It is doubtful there is any good data in the above 82 S run...20 to 30 frames maximum were in partly cloudy to mostly clear conditions. The rest were in thick cloud. 09:33Z We reopened for strip 82 S again. Details in the imaging section. Some useful data were obtained this time in partly cloudy conditions. 11:44Z endNight started. endNight rejoiced. 12:22Z Spooling started and completed for run 5680. Per Rick's instructions, we did NOT start spooling run 5681. Apparently, more processing must be done (photo?) before the next run can be spooled. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5677 23:35Z 23:49Z 100 O 74.70 78.39 39 ignore 5679 04:50Z 05:09Z 100 O 153.80 158.51 46 bias 5680 05:10Z 06:34Z 82 S 131.50 -64.00 131 science 5681 09:34Z 11:41Z 82 S -162.66 -130.79 227 science ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- 05:00Z Run 5679 - Bias on telescope. 05:11Z Run 5680 - 82 S startLambda 131.5 - Supernova drift This drift started in clouds. i5 is still bad.
