A little less than 2 hours was lost tonight due to a power supply failure in one of the altitude amplifiers. A big thank you to French for all his help with getting things going again. We start SpoectroMonthly Chekout, made position the fibers and spectra wavelength on CCD. No problems. At the windows McpMenu and System Status: slit_head_door2_opn -- yellow mark. Night: ------ 00:55Z Fans On, Louvers Open (doors closed for bias) 01:20Z Run 6440 On telescope bias in darkened enclosure. 01:45Z Enclosure Open. As has been noted on recent occasions, the NE building truck made some thumping noises while opening. 02:17Z Run 6441 82 N lambda 113 to 179 Skippy and focus happy from the start Seeing is mediocre ranging from 1.5 to 2.0. Cloud camera images are showing a uniform but grainy appearance. The standard deviation is over 9 during what otherwise appears to be photometric conditions. 03:30Z Seeing improves to around and arcsecond. 04:08Z Getting pretty humid, though maybe not as much as the 3.5m sensor is indicating. It says there is only a 2.2 degree split. The PT sensor is showing 3.1 C split. A check of the usual surfaces around the telescope show no signs of condensation except the door to the enclosure. It is often the first to show condensation and typically when the split is between 3 and 4 C. I am electing to remain open for now. 05:15Z Humidity easing a little. 3.5m sensor split now 3.5 C and PT 3.7 C. 05:35Z Some high cloud passing in front of where the imager is looking. Clouds are fairly thin but bright moon is making for obvious background variation on the scrolling display. 06:45Z Here's something a bit curious. The air temperature has been constant all night to within a degree C. The telescope has been pointed at the same altitude all night. Yet the focus value of the secondary has changed by nearly 250 over the course of five hours, and the change has been essentially linear in slope once the telescope temperature sensors showed things nearing equilibrium about four hours ago. So what's causing the change? 06:54Z Altitude abort approximately frame 467, lambda -179 frame 477: attempting axis init and track did not restore things Drift ended. Confusingly, the watcher running on Monx3 has a time stamp of 05:51Z for the abort. If that is true then there may also be a positional glitch in the data around frame 365, lambda 168. skippy was happy for the time after 05:51Z so in any case the data should be good until the last few frames of the run. The altitude would not initialize. The next step was to figure out why. The interlocks root causes was showing up and down motor permit was disabled because "permit timed out" was true and there was no additional information on what makes this permit time out. A check of the usual things that disable altitude ( the pin, the lift not being all the way down, the dog house door, and the cart pinned in the dog house all registered true). There was also no indication on the slip detection of any problem. At this point I decided to see if I could just resume the scan with the altitude off. Unfortunately it must have drifted enough with all the brake cycling to be more than 20 arcseconds off the desired position. Not being able to resume taking data I continued trying to find why the altitude would not move. To determine if the problem was in the interlocks or the amplifier I bypassed the altitude up and down permits. The altitude would then move, and with the motion permits enabled the problem became clear. The number one amplifier was showing the bad power supply led and the 12 V led on the amplifier was obviously dimmer than the rest. It was probably that way before but I mistook the bad power supply led for the bidirectional inhibit. Having narrowed the problem down to the power supply, I decided to wake French. He said if it was a problem with the amplifier it shouldn't be too hard to swap the amplifier for the spare. He confirmed that it was indeed a bad 12 V supply and so we swapped for the spare. Some test slews were made to make sure the settings were good enough to run, and we were back on the sky. In all just under two hours were lost to the problem. 08:52Z Run 6444 82 N lambda -164 to -123 skippy happy from the start The short version is focus was settled by frame 33. Focus was also good at the start, though the plot said it was off by about 75 microns. Believing the plot, I moved the secondary but gave setFocus the absolute value by accident, then corrected with a relative move, only to have the plot then say I was 75 off the other way, so I moved back to where I started. All this was happening between frames 20 and 30.
