APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday June 21, 2008 (MJD 54639) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Audrey Simmons Howard Brewington Dan Oravetz (swing) Jon Brinkmann (support) French (support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- While doing imager cals last night, someone went into the 2.5-meter enclosure and turned on and left on the lights. Since we did not know the exact time this happened, we had no good way of salvaging any of the data from the first 'getQeCCD U 3' run. Consequently, QE U 3 was re-collected and about 2 hours were lost. A second QE U 3 was completed and should be good. As discribed in the shake plan, we tried to find guide stars on the segue cluster plates. Unfortunately, we could not, so we're having them unplugged. Galileo has BIG problems; it went down several times during the night and needed to be rebooted. However, it would only work for about five minutes before becoming unhappy again. Jon Brinkmann was called and knows about the problem. The inst lift would not work as we tried to dismount the last cart of the night; Frenck knows about the problem. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Restarted the servers. All systems checked and working properly. There was a large puddle of water just to the north of the access hatch to the lower enclosure. sdsshost2.apo.nmsu.edu % df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 142G 127G 8.2G 94% / /dev/sda1 99M 30M 64M 33% /boot /dev/sdb1 917G 688G 183G 80% /data sdssfiles1:/data1/data 1.5T 591G 802G 43% /files Removed the engineering camera, mounted the corrector and cartridge 8, and set the counterweights to 255. Set up the guiderMac for SenSys and tested with a `gcam 5' in SOP and everything responded normally. Spectro collimation set for ~14C (sp1) and ~13C (sp2). Night: ------ 02:14Z Sunset. We had clouds and high winds, so we setup for imager cals. 03:02Z getQeCCD u 3, Run #7568, frames 02 to 31 After the above run, we discovered that someone went into the 2.5-meter enclosure and turned on and left on the lights. So, we re-collected the data for U 3; see below: 04:54Z Bias, Run# 7569, frame 01 05:04Z getQeCCD u 3, Run #7569, frame 02 to 32 07:15Z Clouds began to clear, so we pulled the enclosure. Enclosure off, topped-off spectro secondary dewars, checked top/bottom balance, did a test slew, checked fiducial crossings for each axis, and started the DIMM. O7:40Z Cart 05, plate 2632 (segCluster156). Field was found with an fk5; however, we could not find more than a couple of guide stars. We went back to the fk5 and made sure we had a good focus. Unfortunately, our lack-of-guide-star situation was not improved when we returned to the field. After the cart was removed from the telescope, it was inspected. We note that the guide fibers seemed to be at the focal plane. So, we have no idea why this plate produced so few guide stars. 08:05Z Cart 06, plate 2633 (segCluster156). We did an inspection of the fibers before mounting this cart. We note that a few fibers in the dense cluster area had slipped below the focal plane of this plate. However, we did not see any of the guide fibers that were not pushed in all the way. After the cart was mounted, the field was found with an fk5; unfortunately, we could only find a couple of the guide stars. So, as posted in the science plan, we had these cluster plates unplugged. 08:35Z Cart 07, plate 2812 (segue 166). Field was found with an fk5. Seeing was about 1.2" as reported by the DIMM. 09:15Z We lost the cloud camera images, sos reductions, idl, and some postings on our web page. We remembered that there was another such problem a few weeks ago; unfortunately, the 2.5-meter logs were unavailable because of this problem. Jon Brinkmann was called (sorry Jon). He said that galileo had some some previous problems and that we should reboot it. After galileo was up and running again, we were able to do an sos_redo to get some sos reductions. Jon was not sure if tonight's problem and the previous one were related. He will look into it later today. 09:35Z Galileo went down again but was restored with another reboot. 09:45Z Galileo went down again. We turned it off for several minutes before rebooting. It was restored again. 10:07Z Galileo went down again. We did not reboot it this time. Since we could not get any SOS reductions, we have not idea if cart 07, plate 2812 is done. We set an email to Brian for his opinion. Galileo needs some TLC. 10:19Z Morning twilight 11:10Z We mounted the imager for Jim and Connie but had a problem dismounting the cart. The lift would not go up, so we switched to the man-side for the dismount. endNight finished and was happy. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7567 00:33Z 01:14Z 100 O -12.09 -1.68 84 ignore 7570 06:52Z 07:21Z 100 O 83.03 90.20 62 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 53704, plate -9999 ------- 00:22 53704 0.0 bias 00:40 53705 0.0 bias ----- sequence 53706, plate 2909 ------- 01:24 53706 10.0 flat 01:27 53707 2.0 arc 01:32 53708 3.0 arc 01:34 53709 3.0 arc 01:50 53710 3.0 arc 01:53 53711 3.0 arc 01:59 53712 10.0 flat 02:01 53713 2.0 arc 02:13 53714 3.0 arc 02:16 53715 2.0 arc 02:21 53716 10.0 flat 02:23 53717 2.0 arc ----- sequence 53718, plate 2909 ------- 03:13 53718 0.0 bias ----- sequence 53719, plate 2812 ------- 08:49 53719 10.0 flat 08:52 53720 2.0 arc 09:10 53721 902.0 target 09:32 53722 901.0 target 09:50 53723 900.0 target 09:53 53724 10.0 flat 09:55 53725 2.0 arc 10:13 53726 901.0 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 08:55Z 7 2812 -48.34 -0.0012 70.40 0.0019 138.34 0.0066 1.000300 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 08:54Z 7 2812 1.00030 -2963 -1347 -25 -48 70.4 12.8 8 142 gdr 1.2 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:23Z 51 39 15 81 (E) 1793 - clouds 23:55Z 52 39 19 91 (E) 1462 - clouds 00:25Z 51 36 25 86 (E) 1719 - clouds 00:57Z 53 36 31 78 (ENE) 1173 - clouds 01:28Z 53 35 25 71 (ENE) 749 - clouds 01:59Z 56 37 2 324 (NW) 918 - clouds 02:30Z 54 34 15 40 (NE) 746 - clouds 03:02Z 55 32 19 68 (ENE) 678 - 03:34Z 54 35 28 60 (ENE) 751 - 04:06Z 51 38 32 51 (NE) 804 - 04:38Z 51 36 25 61 (ENE) 570 - 05:11Z 56 30 25 52 (NE) 658 - 05:43Z 60 25 31 69 (ENE) 603 - 06:15Z 57 30 10 182 (S) 591 - 06:47Z 56 31 6 148 (SSE) 595 - 07:19Z 55 30 5 167 (SSE) 558 - 07:51Z 55 30 9 137 (SE) 579 - 08:22Z 55 39 2 156 (SSE) 1399 - 08:53Z 55 33 6 141 (SE) 1039 - 09:24Z 53 36 11 146 (SE) 810 - 09:56Z 54 39 6 181 (S) 1105 - 10:28Z 53 41 8 180 (S) 1358 - 11:00Z 53 42 5 184 (S) 1380 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 07:00Z - Began ventilation; doors and louvers opened, fans on. 07:15Z - Enclosure off. 10:45Z - Enclosure on, doors and louvers closed, fans off.
