APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday November 3, 2010 (MJD 55504) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Oravetz Audrey Simmons Steph Snedden (afternoon) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- BOSS Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clear night with moderate/poor seeing. We had to close the last couple hours due to high humidity. We observed: Cart 10, plate 4321 (maybe done) Cart 11, plate 4278 Cart 17, plate 4276 Cart 12, plate 4265 Cart 15, plate 3755 (done) We did not see any obvious changes to the S/N plots for sp2. It seems like we still have the mysterious light leak issue even though tape was applied to the gap in the wind baffle. We inspected everywhere inside and around the telescope and could not find any obvious light sources. David Schlegal called us and requested a few special tests be done on cart 10 so that we can help isolate this problem. We took one 5 min exposure just slightly off the field and another 5 minute exposure with the flat field petals closed. We had to run the cartridge bay scissor lift manually the last few hours. We used port 8082 for the platedb, and all S/N values updated normally. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Mark and French were at the telescope when I was starting checkout. Both waved me toward the telescope, where I was told a possible culprit for the light leak had been identified. A warped windbaffle plate was letting light through a one inch gap. This gap was not obvious. Mark found it lying under the telescope with a flashlight on the ground. The gap was covered with black duct tape. It is close to the M1 end of the baffle, on the underside when the telescope is at stow. It would point generally toward El Paso when observing fields in the south. We will keep an eye on the quality of the S/N tonight. The rest of afternoon checkout was trouble free. 22:30Z - Guider dark taken. BOSS bias, dark, hartmanns, flat and arc taken on cartridge 10. Collimation adjusted (actuator piston moves only). 22:50Z - Doors opened, ventilation started. 23:17Z - Cartridge 10 mounted Night: ----- 00:25Z - Opened enclosure. We did not see any obvious changes to the S/N plots for sp2. It seems like we still have the mysterious light leak issue even though tape was applied to the gap in the wind baffle. We inspected everywhere inside and around the telescope, and could not find any obvious light sources. David Schlegal called us and requested a few special tests be done so that we can isolate this problem. 03:34Z - We moved 0.25 degrees in altitude so that the stars are no longer visible, and took a 5 minute exposure (121549). We noticed that occasionally there would be some random lights that would appear in the fibers. We thought it was very strange because we turned on the guider, but turned off the axes correction. A few guider images are proc-gimg-0471.fits, proc-gimg-0468.fits, proc-gimg-0469.fits etc. 03:41Z - Closed flat field screens and took a 5 minute image (121550).
