We observed and finished two normal spectro plates during moonlight and got ~12 (S/N)^2 on special plate 797. We imaged 33S up to a lambda~-27 where the seeing got bad and 33N completely through the desired lambda range and a little bit past. As last night, the imager Focus(T) equation predicted a focus about 300 microns too positive. No major gotchas. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Given the initial moon, we started with Cartridge 5, plate 743. We found guide stars right away and did not have to force any fiducial corrections. Shouts of "it's a miracle" were heard in the control room. The miracle was short-lived, however, as pre-calibs failed because pgPlot took over and un-grabbed the instruments for us. Shouts of "not again" echoed in the halls. ~02:50UT: On to cart 6 plate 689 - again we found guide stars on the initial gotoField. We could have switched to imaging at this point, but none of the stripes in the plan were at a good position, so we wnt on to another plate. Cart 3 plate 797. This time, though there were no guide stars on the gotoField. An fk5InFiber found two stars in fiber 10. Not ones to back away from twice the pleasure, we centered up on the brighter of the two and found our guide stars on the next gotoField with no further troubles. While centering on the stars, however, a 0.007 scaleChange moved the stars so far out, the guider could not bring them back in again. Usually, a scaleChange of this magnitude is easily handled so we chalk it up as a fermi luke. We also note with interest that guideFiber 6 is EXCEPTIONALLY bright - about 30 times more ADUs than the other guide stars! The SOPGuider gave us an efficiency of 17.4 for that star. We got a (S/N)^2 of 11.4-13.8 plus a smear on this plate. 05:47UT -we have mounted the imager and are off to 33S, starting at lambda=-62. During this slew, we had a too large to correct az fiducial crossing so stopped the run we just started, forced a correction, re-slewed and started again. Frame 31 (~06:09UT) is about the start of our science lambda: -58. We passed our ending lambda (-23) around frame 264. Seeing became unacceptable, though around lambda=-27. Frame 279 is ~end of rampdown. Once again, the focus formula suggest a focus value of 0; we find one about -300 to be more appropriate. Our focus guess was right on and the pointing was OK (although the rotator was off by 0.01deg). Data are good from the first frame. The nuErr rose above 8" somewhere around frame 230, but stayed well below 18". We decided to try our luck next on the rest of 33N left from last night - starting the slew at lambda=-44, entering our science ramp at frame 18. By frame 28, the seeing looked better. We should have entered science around frame 31. By frame 83, we exceeded nuErr of 8.0". We hit lambda=+2 at around frame 312, but decided to march on until twilight as there was only 45 minutes or so remaining. We stopped the run at lambda=+13, frame 385 to take some more disk-filling (they don't just go to your waist) donuts. (We meant to just stop the focus loop, but ...) Run 2827 has donuts and is called engineering: Frame Focus 10 nominal (-370 relative) 13 +300 (-70 relative) 17 -300 (-670 relative) Run 2828 is a good bias. endNight was still running as I finish
