APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday February 2, 2002 (MJD 52308) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: Steph Snedden, Pete Newman Visitor: Prof. Jurek of Civilization (the computer game, not the harsh reality) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Complete astroline twilight tests from shakedown, then science with the usual priorities. Imaging and gangs tapes being shipped for re-analysis at FNAL. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Weather prevented opening. We conducted a pseudo-twilight test of astroline's ability to recover from bright backgrounds. WARNING: There was some snow accumulation around the west roll-up door that may turn to ice during the day and freeze the building to the ground again. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Snow falling from mid-afternoon continued through the night, so we did not open. We conducted a pseudo-test of the new astroline code's ability to recover from bright background levels, which apparently still has some problems. See the Imaging Details section for details. See the problems section for a curious repeating message from the imager server. endNight is running as this is being mailed. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2944 0037Z 0049Z 100 O -148.36 -145.48 33 bias on telescope 2945 0056Z 0256Z 100 O -143.61 -113.48 215 engineering (astroline test) 2946 0258Z 0308Z 100 O -113.13 -110.65 30 engineering (astroline test) ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 2945, pseudo-twlilight test of astroline recovery. Notation is as in IOP, i.e. chip 36 is chip 3 (u) in dewar 6. Unless specified, all chips are in photo dewars. Frame What the observers saw ----- ------------------------------------- 8 Drift starts in dark enclosure (twilight outside). All displays normal. 22 Start of pseudo-twilight. Dimmable enclosure lamps on enough to show bright grey on displays for chips 1, 2 and 4 (r, i, z) on all dewars. 25 Chips 35, 36 showing blue on displays. Astroline complains in watcher that all chips have nquartile errors. 31 Lights off. Immediately see blue displays ramp up for chips 33, 34, 35, 36, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56. 34 All displays back to black in all chips except dewar 1. 35 All displays back to back. Good! Continue in dark. 54 Lamps up to twilight level without saturating. 57 Chips 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 start to show pink "saturated" on displays. 58 Chip 45 pink. 60 Astro chip 11, 14 and photo chips 33, 34 blue blue. 61 Chip 36 blue. 64 Lights off. All astro dewars go blue. 65 No pink displays. 66 Only chip 3 in all photo dewars plus chip 51 showing blue. All others black. 67 Chips 34, 35, 36, 51 blue. 68 Chips 35, 36, 51 blue. 70 Chips 36, 51 blue. 73 Chip 36 blue, and continued to show blue until drift ended. 215 Drift ended. We examined frames 21 (before lights on, display normal) and 73 (after lights off, display blue) from chip 36 and could not discern differences in the bias levels. We also compared frame 74 for chips 31, 3 and 36 and also could not discern differences. We called up the nQuartile plots from watcher and found that many of the chips were not showing recovery of their pre-lights levels. In all cases when they did not recover to the original nQuartile level, the plotted values were _lower_ than the original values, but seemed to be running at a flat level. We conclude that astroline probably still has a problem, but think we need to test under a real sky passing a real bright star to test it properly. This record in not detailed: when the first 'blue' displayed started, most? were only blue on one half of the chip. The U chips in partiocular went completely blue only when the lights were turned off. Run 2946, check nquartile values from dark run. All chips in spec with a few frames. ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL4936-41, JL4970 Stays: JL4942-47, JL4971 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 17:42 26 25 6 343 (NNW) 360 - Snow 18:14 26 24 6 26 (NNE) 499 - " 18:47 26 24 3 42 (NE) 158 - " 19:19 26 24 14 355 (NNW) 25 - " 19:59 28 26 15 330 (NNW) 24 - " 20:31 28 27 17 305 (NW) 34 - " 21:08 28 27 11 282 (WNW) 251 - " 21:40 29 27 11 282 (WNW) 245 - " 22:12 29 27 9 270 (W) 60 - " 22:48 29 27 8 273 (W) 91 - " 23:21 29 27 9 272 (W) 86 - " 00:01 29 27 10 301 (WNW) 13 - " 00:33 28 27 5 353 (NNW) 313 - " 01:06 30 28 11 325 (NW) 17 - " 01:38 30 28 17 337 (NNW) 5 - Overcast 02:10 29 27 12 327 (NNW) 19 - " 02:46 28 26 6 345 (NNW) 41 - Snow 03:19 28 25 10 46 (NE) 34 - " 03:55 29 26 0 114 (ESE) 58 - " 04:27 29 27 1 280 (W) 39 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- UT --:-- Did not open.
