APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday December 30, 2002 (MJD 52639) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Howard Brewington Night: Dan Long, Pete Newman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Photometric all night. One plate completed (1092), then the rest of the night was spent either imaging or waiting for periods of very bad seeing to pass. We completed the oblique scan and UCAC scan for this dark run, and got several hours of good data on strip 28S. We lost signal from one MIG and had several software problems, detailed in the log. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Pre-flight checks: ------------------ We found that the enclosure HVAC was off and an alarm was sounding. See problem section #1 for details. We also seem to have lost signal from the M1 lateral F (west) MIG. See problem #2 and PR4598 for details. We hope to be imaging tonight, and found ~60% of the /data/photo disk was full of old donuts, which we ate to make space. Probably because the HVAC was not on, the telescope was seriously out of thermal equilibrium at sunset. The wind was also swinging to the north, so we started with spectroscopy to test seeing. About 01:50Z, the X server on Landru died again. See problem #3 for details. This repeated at 11:55Z. Observing sequence: ------------------- ~00:45Z Plate 1092, cartridge 6. Done in two exposures when added to the data from MJD 52638 (last night). 02:23Z Switch to imaging - see imaging details section for...details! During imaging, we discovered a possible bug in watcerh - see problem #4 for details. ~09:15Z After obtaining several hours of good imaging data, the seeing degraded very quickly to > 3 arcsec in g band measured on the imager (approximately the same as the spectrographic guider's pass band. This is no good for imaging, but also no good for spectroscopy, so we log time to "other wather problem" and wait, using the imager to monitor seeing before deciding if we will continue with imaging if the seeing reverts to < 2 arcsec or switch to spectroscopy if it reverts to < 2.8 arcsec. 10:33Z Seeing improved enough to resume imaging on strip 28S when it degraded before, but it probably didn't last long enough to be useful, so we did a UCAC scan instead. We think the seeing was acceptable for this purpose. endNight is running as this log is being completed, and given the amount of imaging we completed, we expect it to take several hours. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3553 22:57Z 23:05Z 100 O 152.68 154.74 28 ignore Doghouse bias 3554 02:43Z 02:58Z 100 O -150.57 -146.94 38 bias On telescope 3555 03:00Z 03:02Z 10 N -156.80 -156.41 17 ignore 3557 03:52Z 04:45Z 100 O -133.42 -119.93 103 calibration Oblique scan 3558 04:48Z 04:54Z 100 O -119.19 -117.80 23 ignore 3559 04:56Z 05:50Z 100 O -117.36 -103.68 104 calibration Oblique scan 3560 05:57Z 09:54Z 28 S -67.27 -7.82 410 science 3561 09:56Z 10:31Z 28 S -7.38 1.46 72 ignore 3562 10:36Z 12:07Z 28 S -29.31 -6.47 164 science 3563 12:11Z 12:51Z 10 N -19.36 -9.27 79 calibration UCAC ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 3554 - Bias on telescope, t-bars unlatched Run 3555 - IGNORE - Equatorial scan but autoscale not used Run 3556 - IGNORE - Equatorial scan. We logged in to the control panel and found only unacknowldged alarm was COS:FAN-FAIL dated today (I think it was today, 12-30-02, although I did not record the date until after I'd acknowledged the alarm. That did NOT clear the front-door alarm. Pressing the button on the front door stopped the sounder but not the flashing light. Only when we turned on the exhaust fan (without inciedent) did the front-door alarm turn off. We suspect the damper in the exhaust fan tunnel had been frozen up earlier, but when we checked it was free of ice and watched it operate ok. Problem #2 - M1 Lateral F (West) actuator MIG reading went to zero ------------------------------------------------------------------ After working fine during the afternoon, we noted that the value reported by TPM for the M1 lateral F (west) actuator MIG was reading exactly zero. We plotted the values using the TPM archive web server and found this occured about 23:21Z on 2002-12-30. We saw no variation in the reported value (unlike that from the lateral E MIG), hich suggests we've lost signal from the MIG rather than it being reset to a new zero point. PR4598 opened. Problem #3 - Landru crashed its X server ---------------------------------------- About 01:50Z, the X server on Landru died again, losing Pete's sessions mataining this log, although almost nothing was lost on recovery after just logging in again. Landru was running nicely before the crash, which occurred when the screen saver was NOT on and no typing was being done. Problem #4 - watcher missed fiducial errors ------------------------------------------- The azimuth axis got a "too large to correct" error when crossing fiducials. This showed up in a watcher run by Pete from commish, but didn't show up in Dan's ( also run from commish). The only difference we could find is that there was an earlier error in my watcher about max acceleration for the axes which Dan had not cleared, but which Pete had cleared prior to the fiducial error. If having one kind of error uncleared prevents another one from registering, this is bad and should be fixed. PR4599 opened.
