APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday July 7, 2003 (MJD 52828) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Steph Snedden Night: Howard Brewington Pete Newman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakeup. Hope for some science as well. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Because of clouds and/or high humidity, we were unable to collect any science photons or do much testing of the new version of IOP (v3_117_0). However, we did the two other shake items, i.e., JEG imager flatfield tests and PR 5109. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: ------------ Walkaround: Jon B. says we should let the spectrographs warm up at the end of the night. He gave us instructions for turning the voltage up full to warm the CCDs to prevent condensation. Servers were started under the test iop. Two biases were taken before the MJD rollover for testing IOP PR 5109. Run 4043 was labeled ignore. Run 4044 was labeled bias, but was taken with the tbars latched. Spectrograph focus was checked. No adjustments made. Steph set up the DIMM and during the alignment phase the alt drive stopped turning again. The problem has not been fixed. Same symptoms as before. Sigh. We also still have cable wrap issues with the azimuth drive, or perhaps more properly, we should call it a Meade wrap problem. The azimuth slews to Polaris are usually the long way around after aligning to a star(s) in the West. This wraps the alt drive cable around the base. We can anticipate this by wrapping the cable in the opposite sense before aligning, but we could then get into trouble with the cable when slewing to other stars. We need to understand the Meade slew logic and avoid cable wraps before we remotely slew the Meade. Night: ----------- 02:40Z cart 05, plate 1348. We started early while the sky was still bright, so we used an Fk5 star to find the field. 03:08Z Because of high humidity, we closed. 07:49Z We mounted the imager and did the JEG imager flatfield test as described in the Shakeup Plan. We saved frames 11 to 20 of Run #4045 in /data/photo/optics/52828. Next, we turned off the lamps and did an on-telescope bias and saved frames 11 to 15 of Run# 4046 to phoenix:/data/photo/optics/52828. We did not complete sufficient testing to declare IOP v3_117_0 safe to use. We were able use it for on-sky spectrographic observations as far as acquiring stars and guiding, but not further because of poor weather. A search (of sorts) through previous shake logs showed that we did not declare v3_116_0 current because the checkLED and checkBias commands had changed but were not tested as the corresponding procedures had not been updated. This is still the situation, as far as we are aware. v3_116_0 seems to be the only test version since the current v3_113_2 version. We tested the endNight changes in v3_117_0 (PR 5109); this test was successful. This PR should be closed, but we were unable to connect to Princeton to do so. endNight finished and was happy. 09:42Z We started warming the spectro chips. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4043 22:08Z 22:22Z 100 O -33.36 -29.81 38 ignore 4044 22:34Z 22:50Z 100 O -26.70 -22.73 38 bias (in doghouse) 4045 07:45Z 07:55Z 100 O 111.31 113.94 29 calibration 4046 07:57Z 08:04Z 100 O 114.28 116.05 26 bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 21798, plate 1037 ------- 23:24 21798 10.0 flat 23:27 21799 2.0 arc 23:31 21800 2.1 arc 23:33 21801 2.1 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL6611,12,13,14,15,16,33 Stays: JL6618,19,20,21,22,23,34 We are not, however, shipping these tapes.
