APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday November 30, 2003 (MJD 52974) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek Howard Brewington ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Finished 3 plates (1096, 1271, 1590). We got three 20 minute exposures on plate 1253 in good conditions but SoS would not reduce the data. Would someone please have a look at the data for plate 1253 and tell us what S/N^2 was obtained. We obtained four exposures on the Tremonti plate - 2 at pointing 2, 2 at pointing 5. The first exposure for pointing 2 (23638) may be a bit over-corrected (i.e., too many hand-guided corrections). We are calling it good. Please let us know if it needs to be redone. Good data on another plate (1301). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- During afternoon checkout we had a write error on id6-2. We followed the procedure for recovering from the error and all was well. See the Problems section for the associated watcher errors. No other afternoon problems. Photometric at sunset but the moon is up so we began with spectroscopy. Plate 1096 (cartridge 2): No guide stars on the gotoField but an FK5 was easily found. The weird noise pattern in the guider images has returned. We tried jiggling the cables but this only made it worse. At the start of the 2nd exposure, the guide stars disappeared from the guider. The exposure was paused but the guide stars did not return. The exposure was aborted in preparation for going to the field again but then the guide stars returned on their own. Another science exposure was then started. We obtained 4 good exposures (5700 s total) and when combined with previous data (52973), this was enough to declare this plate done. Upon slewing to instrument change there was an az axis too large to correct: azimuth (correction for azimuth -1737 is too large (2003-12-01 03:20:09Z sdssmcp): 2003-12-01 03:20:21Z ) Plate 1253 (cartridge 4): After clearing offsets, an FK5 was found. Long guider exposures (due to faint guide stars) and multiple large scale changes increased the set up time for this plate. We did three 20 minute exposures but SoS never reduced any of them. This plate was observed in fairly decent conditions (mostly clear, 1.7" seeing) and it may even be finished. Could someone please look at the data and let us know ASAP where we stand with this plate. There was no entry made in the database for this plate. We will update the database when someone gives us a number. Again we had an az too large to correct on the slew to instrument change: azimuth (correction for azimuth -121773 is too large (2003-12-01 05:05:13Z sdssmcp): 2003-12-01 05:05:14Z) We tried to force the fiducial at 122 (near stow) but it would not accept it. We then slewed to cross another fiducial and forced that one and this time it worked. Plate 1180 (cartridge 9): After clearing offsets there were a few guide stars on the gotoField. This is the Tremonti plate. The first exposure may be a bit over-corrected as we were just learning the guiding procedure. We are calling it good for now. Please let us know if it needs to be redone. The guider stopped working during the recentering between the 1st and 2nd exposure. It had to be stopped and restarted twice before it began working again. The first two exposures (23638, 23639) finished off pointing 2 (there was already an exposure for pointing 2 on a previous night). The last two exposures (23640, 23641) were for pointing 5. All exposures were 20 minutes in length. After plate 1180 expired, the moon was down and we contemplated switching to imaging. However, light clouds started appearing in the sky camera and so we decided to stay with spectroscopy. Plate 1271 (cartridge 8): After offsets were cleared an FK5 was found. The seeing started out bad but improved throughout. This plate was finished in three exposures (4500 s total). A 4th exposure was started but was aborted after a few hundred seconds when we saw it was unnecessary. Plate 1590 (cartridge 1): Guide stars on the gotoField. This plate was finished in 4 exposures (4800 s total). Plate 1301 (cartridge 5): After offsets were cleared an FK5 was found. The preCal command was issued before the last guider frame had read out. Normally this just issues an error window which you acknowledge and then re-issue the preCal command. However, this time the error window froze up and would not allow us to acknowledge it. Eventually, we had to destroy the window which killed the sop session and we lost a few minutes getting the sop session back. Then the guider flat was bad and had to be redone. Also, a large scale change was made in the wrong direction and had to be redone. We were able to obtain one 900 s exposure before this plate expired though. The grade 2 N2 bottle (orange bottle) seemed to hold steady at 1600 and did not lose any more gas. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4296 22:49Z 23:13Z 100 O 120.99 126.89 39 ignore 4297 23:53Z 00:18Z 100 O 136.91 143.24 56 ignore 4298 01:57Z 02:12Z 100 O 167.94 171.70 39 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES, except for for plate 1301.
