(but long bias was taken to see if there is a bad noise in dewar 1). Spectrographs - ok, but since all of them were over 0.2, I corrected collimation a bit. Telescope ok. MIGs - ok. No problems to report. Night: ------ While the long afternoon bias was being taken, watcher was reporting no gang transfer errors. The results of ptvmeTest are given in the problems section. The bias was ended, the tapes were ejected and all 3 crates (photo and astro) were rebooted). Shortly thereafter, the servers died and were restarted with a start_servers -K. The moon is up so we begin with spectroscopy. Plate 1658 (cartridge 5): Standard survery plate. FK5 used to acquire guide stars because of bright twilight conditions. This plate finished in 3 exposures (2700 sec total). Plate 1909 (cartridge 2): Segue faint plate. Long exposure needed to find FK5. gGuide had problems on this plate (see Problems section) so we tried the old guider. At first, the old guider would not make corrections although it looked like it was computing them. We loaded the cartridge again and went to the field again and tried gGuide but got the same error messages. We then tried the old guider again and it appeared to work. However, there was a large rotator error that the old guider could not overcome. We tried to make the rotator correction by hand but gave up after a few attempts and decided not to waste any more time. The lost time was billed to a spectrograph problem from 0400 to 0435Z. We switched cartridges. Shortly after switching cartridges, we realized that the problem with the guider was probably caused by a bad guider flat. Sorry about that. Plate 1918 (cartridge 1): Segue plate. FK5 needed to acquire field. This plate was finished in 3 exposures (3000 sec total). Lots of scattered light warnings in SoS. Several sky residual warnings and a whopping fiber warning were reported by SoS as well. Plate 1919 (cartridge 4): Segue faint plate. Guide stars on the gotoField. This plate was finished in 4 exposures (4800 sec total). We considered switching to imaging at this point. However, there were clouds building to the north of us which were producing a substantial amount of lightning. The uncertain state of dewar 1 and the availability of only lower priority stripes at this time also figured into our decision to stick with spectroscopy. Plate 1661 (cartridge 8): Segue test plate. Guide stars on the gotoField after previous offsets were cleared. Lightning flashes were seen in the distance while mounting this cartridge so beware of possible contamination of the data. When combined with last night's data (53239), this plate was finished in 2 exposures (1920 sec total). Plate 1889 (cartridge 6): Segue faint plate. Guide stars on the gotoField. This plate was done in 3 exposures (3000 sec total). Plate 1894 (cartridge 7): Segue plate. Guide stars on the gotoField. This plate had a guide star that wouldn't fit in the guider frame: sp1> showGuiderFrame Error: Star 2 won't fit in an 450*450 region, scaled 150 So, we had to use a startMon -simple. This plate was finished in 3 exposures (2400 sec total). Some bonus signal was obtained because it could be.
