APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday September 20, 2004 (MJD 53269) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden (swing) Atsuko Nitta John Barentine The Amazing Mr. Loomis (support) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Imaging of 72 S from -174 < lambda < -126 Finished Plate 1916 Everything was hunky-dory for most of the night until network problems flummoxed us late (see Problems section). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ----- The absorbent cloths were moved to the corners of the lower enclosure, out of the way of the racks. The Grade 2 N2 bottle (for imager LN2 pressurization) is getting close to 500 PSI on the gauge, and will need to be changed before too long. There are no leaks and we've been running just above 500 PSI for the dark run, so there's no apparent rush. Spectro focus check done, and b1 was moved a small amount. Details at the end of the log. The rest of afternoon checkout was uneventful. Night: ------ 01:05Z Fans on, louvers open. Rolled the enclosure off. 02:00Z Atsuko noted that the M1 temperature sensors showed the primary was supercooling. Rather than take the chance, we pre-emptively closed. 03:05Z Opened again after the mirror temperatures stabilized. Force filled the spectrographs again because closing so soon after the last force fill resulted in a large amount of boil-off. 03:20Z Loaded Cart 1, Plate 1916. Stars on goToField after clearing offsets. Finished the plate in three exposures. 05:20Z Switched to imaging, stripe 72 S. Run 4843: Stripe 72 S, startLambda=-176. Seeing was good from the beginning. In focus by frame 17, skippy happy by frame 13. Ramp complete by Lambda = -173.8, Frame 19. Cloud camera happily reported photometric conditions throughout; seeing was good to excellent. Last science frame is 338 at lambda=-126. Run 4844: Stripe 72 N, startLambda=-166. By Frame 11, most of the chips went blue on the scrolling displays (all but dewar 1) -- maybe a nearby bright star? Evertyhing was fine again by Frame 12. Seeing, focus and skippy were good from the beginning. First science frame was Frame 31 at lambda=-162. Network problem 09:10-10:45Z. (see Problems section). We continued collecting imager data (but no PT) during this time. However, skippy did not run again after Frame 12; we finally got it back around Frame 133. Ended the drift at 10:42Z when clouds started moving in. We think this whole run should be declared bad because there were only about 30 useful frames before the network died (and we could no longer verify astrometry or photometricity). Run 4845: Bias run on the telescope. During this time, I lost my X session on commish altogether, and Watcher appears to have died (see Problems section). Gave up with < 1 hour until twilight and clouds. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame MOP crashed on sdssmth and required killing windows to exit the software. hoggpt quit updating cloud camera images. We could not ping consistently between computers on site, but could ping domains outside apo.nmsu.edu. We could not re-initialize the connection to the PT from sdssmth. Throughout this time, we continued imaging (i.e., gangs were bring transferred properly). We got Craig out of bed at 05:30am EDT via cell phone, who graciously talked us through a determination of the problem. As he put it, "NMSU stopped advertising the apo.nmsu.edu delegation." While our local network was, in fact, fine, the "rest of the world" didn't know that apo.nmsu.edu existed during this time. This MAY have affected incoming mail and even mail between machines on site (because of the required lookup of apo.nmsu.edu addresses); as of this writing (12:10Z), despite having sent out the PT log, plugging email, etc., none of us have received those messages in our galileo accounts. We will leave a paper note for the plate pluggers in case our email vaporizes in the meantime. Last but not least, we cannot ssh to tapehost@omaha ("ssh: connect to host omaha port 22: No route to host"). What Is It With These Computers, Anyway?: ----------------------------------------- As we ended the on-telescope bias run near 10:45Z, my (JCB) X session on commish from the terminal in the control room died. I lost control of all the windows. Right around the same time, Atsuko reported that Watcher had died on her landru session; it was also gone on monx3. SN group tape drive: -------------------- FYI, in the cluster of tape drives in the computer room beloning to the SN group, the drive called "col3" has a cleaning light blinking. We ran a cleaning tape in that drive. TPM Errors: ----------- dewar (Imager Dewar Scale Communications Fault:: 2004-09-21 11:28:21Z) m2 mig (Communications Fault: 2004-09-21 11:29:21Z)
