APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday May 3, 2005 (MJD 53494) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Jurek Krzesinski John Barentine ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Spent most of the night under rain, then clouds, finally opening late. Finished three plates (2136, 1829, and 1837). Spectro focus seemed more stable tonight compared to last night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- No problem with the afternoon check. Spectrograph focus checked and found to be set for a temperature about 3 degrees above the PMSS/enclosure or about 10 C. As the outside temp was only 7 or 8 C, it seemed prudent to back off the focus. A mechPiston of about -4000 was issued (500 - 1000 more than requested). So this should correspond to a temperature of best focus of about 7 C. See problems section for details. Night: ------ Overcast with rain in the area at sunset. After midnight things began clearing and we opened around 07:00Z. 07:20Z Cart 7 Plate 2136 (tile 1540, chunk109) GSOGTF. Clouds thickened somewhat during the beginning of the first exposure then thinned out toward the end, by which time we had 80% efficiency on the guider and the sky was nearly photometric. Exposure time was reduced on the second exposure to 600 s from 1200 s on the first exposure but we came in a little low. The final exposure was set to 1080 s to make sure we came in with enough S/N to finish the plate. SoS asked for, and we gave it, a postCalib. Finished the plate. 08:42Z Cart 8 Plate 1829 (tile 1350, chunk94) GSOGTF after clearing the previous plate's offsets. Finished the plate in three exposures of 900, 1200 and 1500 s respectively, adjusting as we went along for variable clouds. 10:14Z Cart 9 Plate 1837 (tile 1359, chunk94) GSOGTF. We didn't spend time messing with focus given that we would need every remaining minute of the night in order to finish this plate. Clouds were thickening, so it wasn't clear if we would be able, logistically, to finish this plate before twilight. We did one 1200 s exposure, then started a 900 s exposure at about the moment of the start of twilight. That gave us just enough signal to call the plate done with the previous night's signal already on it. We put the telescope to bed at 11:15Z. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5302 22:27Z 22:39Z 100 O -92.05 -89.18 33 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 32489, plate -9999 ------- 22:34 32489 0.0 bias 22:37 32491 0.0 bias ----- sequence 32492, plate 1837 ------- 22:48 32492 10.0 flat 22:51 32493 2.0 arc 22:59 32494 2.1 arc 23:01 32495 2.1 arc 23:25 32496 2.1 arc 23:28 32497 2.1 arc 23:43 32498 2.1 arc 23:45 32499 2.1 arc 23:53 32500 10.0 flat 23:56 32501 2.0 arc ----- sequence 32502, plate -9999 ------- 01:34 32502 0.0 bias 01:46 32503 0.0 bias 01:57 32504 0.0 bias ----- sequence 32505, plate 2136 ------- 19.3 15.5 22.4 16.9 DONE 07:27 32505 10.0 flat 07:30 32506 2.0 arc 07:56 32507 1200.1 target 08:09 32508 600.1 target 08:30 32509 1080.1 target 08:33 32510 10.0 flat 08:36 32511 2.0 arc ----- sequence 32512, plate 1829 ------- 18.0 13.9 21.3 16.2 DONE 08:52 32512 10.0 flat 08:54 32513 2.0 arc 09:13 32514 900.1 target 09:36 32515 1200.1 target 10:04 32516 1500.2 target ----- sequence 32517, plate 1837 ------- 12.2 8.1 11.6 10.9 DONE 10:17 32517 10.0 flat (w/ signal from MJD53493) 10:19 32518 2.0 arc 10:43 32519 1200.1 target 11:01 32520 900.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 07:39Z 7 2136 -53.42 0.0028 75.46 0.0015 132.47 0.0051 1.000200 09:06Z 8 1829 -54.73 0.0004 50.20 -0.0005 136.22 -0.0190 1.000150 10:25Z 9 1837 -53.86 0.0005 49.06 -0.0010 136.92 -0.0088 1.000090 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8479 Stays: JL8480 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 07:39Z 7 2136 1.00020 -1974 -422 90 -53 75.5 3.9 1 304 -- 1.4 09:06Z 8 1829 1.00015 -1481 104 150 -55 50.2 3.2 5 2 -- 1.4 10:25Z 9 1837 1.00009 -889 538 90 -54 49.0 3.9 6 268 -- 1.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:32Z 51 26 12 258 (WSW) 751 - Partly Cloudy 23:04Z 51 27 15 214 (SW) 742 - Partly Cloudy 23:35Z 49 27 9 218 (SW) 764 - Partly Cloudy 00:06Z 45 28 11 244 (WSW) 718 - Cloudy 00:37Z 43 29 7 249 (WSW) 702 - Cloudy 01:09Z 39 31 12 284 (WNW) 4227 - Sprinkles 01:41Z 39 31 7 328 (NNW) 1376 - Overcast 01:45Z 39 30 1 206 (SSW) 760 - Overcast 02:16Z 39 28 6 351 (NNW) 971 - Overcast 02:48Z 38 31 14 40 (NE) 1377 - Overcast 03:19Z 36 31 10 60 (ENE) 885 - Overcast 03:50Z 38 31 12 16 (NNE) 739 - Overcast 04:21Z 37 31 9 9 (N) 571 - MstlyCldy 04:52Z 37 31 6 2 (N) 664 - MstlyCldy 05:22Z 38 30 6 353 (NNW) 687 - MstlyCldy 05:53Z 37 31 8 12 (NNE) 661 - MstlyCldy 06:24Z 38 30 12 20 (NNE) 520 - PtlyCldy 06:55Z 38 30 7 0 (N) 528 - PtlyCldy 07:25Z 38 29 7 325 (NW) 635 - PtlyCldy 07:55Z 38 29 8 329 (NNW) 668 - PtlyCldy 08:26Z 36 30 3 1 (N) 608 - PtlyCldy 08:58Z 37 29 2 351 (NNW) 537 - PtlyCldy 09:30Z 37 30 7 353 (NNW) 537 - PtlyCldy 10:01Z 39 28 10 321 (NW) 767 - PtlyCldy 10:32Z 39 28 11 301 (WNW) 705 - MstlyClr 11:03Z 39 28 8 271 (W) 703 - MstlyClr 11:35Z 38 28 6 273 (W) 740 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 06:40Z Fans on, louvers and doors open 07:00Z Enclosure off 11:15Z Enclosure on, doors and louvers closed, spectro dewars force-filled Telescope is parked at 121,30 with Cart 2 (Plate 2000) mounted Counterweights at 270 Spectro autofill reconnected No interlocks bypassed Dewar weights at 11:30Z Imager: 174lbs 22psi Spectro: 172lbs 10psi (filling) ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_147_0 Watcher: v2_30_0 MCP: v5_26_0 TPM: tpm_v2_47_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v2_01 SoS: v4_10_7 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.5830 0.5770 Axial B 0.5870 0.5880 Axial C 0.9490 0.9460 Trans D -8.2020 -8.1960 Lateral E 10.0457 10.0330 Lateral F 11.5951 11.5951 GALILS Commanded: 4300. -1900. 2850. -13300. -7600. -7650.
