APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday November 2, 2005 (MJD 53677) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington (swing) Mike Harvanek (night) Dan Long (night) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science (supernova or otherwise). ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Imaged 82 N from lambda +113, RA 298 to lambda -139, RA 45 (including ramps) in mostly photometric and mostly good seeing conditions with no moon; 748 frames. Imaged 1260 S from mu +71 to mu +97.3, frame 180 (including ramps). Imaged 19 N from lambda -60 to lambda -41.1, maybe more? (including ramps). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- During the checkout, I had to reboot photo-one because of the following iop message: ICC id3 (crate 1, board 2) is not available Bad ICC As part of the 2.5-meter checkout, I noticed that the rotator wrap was making a clicking noise and had jerky movement while the rot traveled in a positive direction. In preparation of mounting the imager, I unmounted cart 08 and noticed that some of the fibers in the M-71 cluster had slipped and were not at the proper focal plane. Because of this problem with cart 08, I checked cart 04 and discovered that it also needs some attention. The SDSS camera bellows pressure was at 44-psi today. Night: ------ No spectrographs and photometricity uncertain so we start with supernova. Run 5812: On-telescope bias in the darkened enclosure. Everything looks okay. Run 5813: 82 N, start lambda +110, RA 295. Started in twilight. Everything good from the beginning. Ramp begins at 01:37Z (end of twilight), frame 28, lambda +113, RA 298. Photometric at the moment, no moon, seeing around 1.2". Seeing bounced around between 1" and 2" for a while and then settled down to about 1.2" around frame 250. Becoming non-photometric around 02:45Z. Back to photometric starting around 03:35Z. Although it remains photometric there are clouds all around us on the satellite images. We can also see the clouds when we go outside and visually check the sky. We decide to continue with this supernova drift. Some of the clouds (those coming from the south) started to dissipate and our chances of remaining photometric improved so we decided to end this supernova drift and move on to a segue stripe. This scan ended at 08:46Z, frame 748, lambda -139, RA 45. Run 5814: 1260 S, start mu +71 at 08:49Z. Everything good from the beginning. The seeing went bad at frame 180, mu +97.3. We stopped the drift at 10:49Z, frame 202, mu +100.6. Note that run 5814 may not appear in the idreport file and did not appear in the imaging summary portion of the log. We reconstructed the summary from our records. It is only approximate. Here is the error message from the end of the endDrift: 2005-11-03 10:50:19Z: idReport: problem in calcStripeParams, setting many params to NaN. Error was: domain error: argument not in valid range continuing with idReport anyway Not sure if this means endNight will need additional help later. Eric? In the hope that the seeing would be better at a higher elevation we decided to try a different stripe. Run 5815: 19 N, start lambda -60 at 10:54Z. Everything good from the beginning. Seeing is good. Twilight occurs at 12:01Z, frame 122, lambda -42.5 but we'll push it to try and finish this strip. We ended this scan at frame 144, lambda -39.3 but, judging from the sky levels, the end of the ramp should probably be set at frame 132, lambda -41.1. We tried running the teamster in the foreground tonight as suggested by Eric Neilsen to help track down the nature of its failures. However, there were problems: im> set lockfile [open /tmp/sdss/teamster.$instrument w] file6 im> puts $lockfile [pid] im> close $lockfile im> chmod -r /tmp/sdss/teamster.$instrument Error: /tmp/sdss/teamster.mt: Operation not permitted im> Eric was notified of this problem by email. ltMatch did not run on any of the runs tonight. The first attempt at endNight failed because ad4 was unresponsive. All crates were rebooted. We ran endNight again and indeed 5814 was not in the idReport file list so additional endNighting may still need to be done. endNight did finish. sn10 needed to be rebooted twice (maybe more?). ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5810 22:36Z 00:19Z 100 O 90.59 116.29 186 ignore 5811 00:27Z 00:32Z 100 O 118.35 119.60 23 ignore 5812 00:33Z 00:52Z 100 O 119.82 124.53 46 bias on-telescope 5813 01:23Z 08:47Z 82 N 109.87 -139.03 756 science good Run 5814 did not appear here.
