APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday January 4, 2006 (MJD 53740) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Howard Brewington Kaike Pan ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We finished four plates: 1501, 1556, 2337, 2344. and possibly another, 2366: We got (S/N)^2 of 17.8, 13.6, 16.4, and 13.9 for b1, r1, b2, and r2, respectively. Brian or somebody else, could you check it to see if we can declare the plate done? Thanks! We also obtained four 25-30 min exposures on plate 2071, and two 25 min exposures on plate 2347. Problems: --"clunk" noise from north track when moving the enclosure. -- SOS disk is 96% full. Thanks to steph for clearing out some space there. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Howard Brewington Kaike Pan Steph Snedden (by phone) Craig Loomis (by phone) Afternoon: No problems with the afternoon check other than an old teamster that was unwilling to retire until Hoffa had a talk with his Dad. Spectrograph focus checked but not changed. Still set for 3 to 4 C. Details in problem section. Cartridge 1 mounted on telescope. 23:05Z Doors Open, Louvers Open, Fans On 00:20Z Enclosure Open Night: When moved the enclosure, we heard "clunk" noises from north track that seem come from north-east side of the building (caused by the east wheel on the north side?). When we tried to setup the DIMM, the sofeware could not center the Polaris (Howard check that the Polaris was pointed to). 01:15Z: cart 1, plt 1501 (merged). A FK5 star is used to find the guiding stars. Seeing went worse to 2.0" after the first exposure. Plate done with 4500 s exposure. 02:55Z: cart 2, plt 1556 (lowZ). Educated guess find stars. Plate is done with total 4000 s exposure time, plusing signals got from MJD 53738 as shown: MJD b1 r1 b2 r2 53738 15.5 10.5 7.2 11.8 53740 19.7 21.0 18.6 23.4 ------------------------------- Total 35.2 31.5 25.8 35.2 04:40Z: cart 6, plt 2071 (Sequefaint). stars on GOTO field. SOS stopped to work. sos_status showed that it was running, sos-redo did not work. Steph was called and she tried stop and start rsync, it did not work either. Then Craig was called (poor Craig, it was 2:00am EST). Craig and Steph got it working. Thanks to Craig for working on this at 3:00 AM. Because of variable seeing, we decided not to switch to imaging. Four exposures with a total time of 105 min give us a (S/N)^2 of 37.8. 07:05Z: cart 7, plt 2337 (Segue). A FK5 is used to find the field. The plate is done with a total exposure time of 4300 s by using b2 (S/N)^2 =32.8. But please notice that r1 (S/N)^2 are smaller than 2.0 for all exposures. 08:50Z: cart 9, plt 2344 (chunk). Stars on GOTO field. Plate done with a total exposure time of 2700 s. 10:00Z: cart 4, plt 2366 (chunk). Stars on GOTO field. Seeing becomes worse than 3.0" after the first exposure. Because of real bad seeing, although we increased exposure time by 55% in the third exposure, we still can not declare the plate is done for sure. The (S/N)^2 for b1, r1, b2, and r2 are 17.8, 13.6, 16.4, an 13.9, Brian, cloud you please check it, and get back to us? 11:30Z: cart 3, plt 2347 (chunk). Stars on goto field. Seeing still very bad, ~ 3.0". Two 25 min exposures gives (S/N)^2 of 13:30Z: endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 36250, plate 2347 ------- 21:50 36250 10.0 flat 21:52 36251 2.0 arc 21:56 36252 2.1 arc 21:58 36253 2.1 arc ----- sequence 36254, plate -9999 ------- 23:22 36254 0.0 bias 23:25 36255 0.0 bias 23:27 36256 0.0 bias ----- sequence 36257, plate 1501 ------- 17.2 15.7 18.6 17.1 01:10 36257 10.0 flat 01:12 36258 2.0 arc 01:36 36259 900.1 target 01:54 36260 900.1 target 02:17 36261 1200.1 target 02:45 36262 1500.1 target 02:47 36263 10.0 flat 02:50 36264 2.0 arc ----- sequence 36265, plate 1556 ------- 19.7 21.0 18.6 23.4 03:05 36265 10.0 flat 03:08 36266 2.0 arc 03:37 36267 1500.1 target 04:05 36268 1500.1 target 04:24 36269 1000.1 target 04:28 36270 10.0 flat 04:30 36271 2.0 arc ----- sequence 36272, plate 2071 ------- 39.2 41.6 44.6 37.8 04:43 36272 10.0 flat 04:45 36273 2.0 arc 05:14 36274 1500.1 target 05:41 36275 1500.1 target 06:09 36276 1500.1 target 06:43 36277 1800.1 target 06:46 36278 10.0 flat 06:48 36279 2.0 arc ----- sequence 36280, plate 2337 ------- 8.4 --- 32.8 38.3 07:03 36280 10.0 flat 07:06 36281 2.0 arc 07:25 36282 900.1 target 07:43 36283 900.1 target 08:11 36284 1500.1 target 08:43 36285 1800.1 target 08:46 36286 10.0 flat 08:48 36287 2.0 arc ----- sequence 36288, plate 2344 ------- 20.9 15.5 23.2 15.4 09:01 36288 10.0 flat 09:04 36289 2.0 arc 09:23 36290 900.1 target 09:41 36291 900.1 target 09:58 36292 900.1 target ----- sequence 36293, plate 2366 ------- 17.8 13.6 16.4 13.9 10:10 36293 10.0 flat 10:12 36294 2.0 arc 10:31 36295 900.1 target 10:48 36296 900.1 target 11:15 36297 1400.1 target ----- sequence 36298, plate 2347 ------- 6.9 5.4 6.6 2.8 11:41 36298 10.0 flat 11:43 36299 2.0 arc 12:06 36300 1200.1 target 12:34 36301 1500.1 target 12:36 36302 10.0 flat 12:39 36303 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:19Z 1 0 5.77 0.0004 57.15 0.0019 184.75 -0.0098 0.999940 03:13Z 2 1556 -27.19 -0.0022 54.09 0.0018 157.33 0.0053 0.999930 04:51Z 6 2071 -18.99 -0.0008 49.68 0.0018 163.94 -0.0297 1.000030 07:13Z 7 2337 180.73 0.0040 56.97 0.0021 1.50 -0.0179 1.000050 09:11Z 9 2344 61.36 -0.0039 76.32 0.0038 234.79 0.0359 1.000190 10:20Z 4 2366 10.23 -0.0057 79.16 0.0034 189.19 0.0394 1.000170 12:09Z 3 2347 277.28 -0.0012 64.06 0.0022 111.67 0.0018 1.000240 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:19Z 1 0 0.99994 593 1825 175 6 57.1 4.7 8 290 -- 1.4 03:14Z 2 1556 0.99993 691 1866 125 -28 54.0 4.2 2 67 -- 1.9 04:51Z 6 2071 1.00003 -296 1037 100 -19 49.7 3.8 14 359 -- 1.9 07:14Z 7 2337 1.00005 -494 827 75 181 57.0 2.8 14 32 -- 2.0 09:11Z 9 2344 1.00019 -1876 -381 50 62 76.3 2.2 24 8 -- 1.8 10:23Z 4 2366 1.00017 -1679 -220 50 6 79.3 2.9 12 60 -- 2.0 12:09Z 3 2347 1.00024 -2370 -519 300 277 64.0 -1.2 27 59 -- 3.0 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:49Z 43 -10 1 302 (WNW) 208 - When the telescope has been at stow for an extended period (say all day), sp2 gets quite a bit colder (as much as 2 or 3 C) presumably due to the boil off of the camera dewars above the spectrograph body in this orientation.
