APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday January 8, 2006 (MJD 53744) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Sheikhs: John Barentine Jurek Krzesinksi ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Sh-Sh-Shakeup! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Completed all shakeup tasks except checking TPM PRs (see Log section). We pouted under a clear sky watching too-high dust counts until late in the night when nature gave us a reprieve just long enough to complete imaging of SEGUE Stripe 1540 S from +149 <= Mu <= +170. Seeing was variable throughout and seeingRun called much of it Bad/Acceptable so we need some feedback as to whether any of it is useful. We left the imager mounted on the telescope. Please remove it during the daytime, if desired. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- We are Dan-less today. Checkout proceeded normally. Night ----- Dusty around sunset (tower 1.0um count > 3000). We started shakeup with a few tasks completed yesterday. These include: o Dithered spectro flats with 15 offsets Mounted the imager at 00:45Z in twilight to take imager flats and biases. First we took a bist (Run 5980 for 30 frames) and ran checkBias: im> checkBias 5980 30 . {61 WARN: } {61 FAIL: leftRNComp } Open /skycat/imager/53744/5980-30-u-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53744/5980-30-g-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53744/5980-30-r-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53744/5980-30-i-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53744/5980-30-z-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53744/5980-30-o-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53744/5980-30-l-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53744/5980-30-t-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53744/5980-30-s-bias.gif/gif {photo h5} {astro h6} Ran biasGen and biasCheck on this same bias run: Writing files to directory /skycat/bias/53744 biasCheck gives the following: Writing file /astrolog/53744/idBiasCheck-005980.par CCD 11 Offset. We looked at some frames in this run and found the levels were around 1200-1300, more like biases than flats. The MCP indicated both UV and white light lamps were on at the time, however. Once the run ended, we ran checkFlat: im> checkFlat 5981 25 . {42 WARN: leftGain } {42 FAIL: } Open /skycat/imager/53744/5981-25-u-flat.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53744/5981-25-g-flat.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53744/5981-25-r-flat.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53744/5981-25-i-flat.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53744/5981-25-z-flat.gif/gif 0 According to the instructions, we were to look at the flat vectors on: http://sdsshost.apo.nmsu.edu/skycat/imager/(mjd) The data are not being ported to any page with a similar URL on sdsshost2 (yet?). When we brought up the URL on old sdsshost, we got a "Not Found" error. We could access the index.html file if we opened it directly on sdsshost2 in a web browser, but not via the web itself. Permissions problem? Doesn't look likely. In any case, we couldn't view the pages with browsers on sdsshost2 because the system resources wouldn't allow it; screen redraws were bad and the browser runs EXTREMELY slow. So I copied over the data to my own personal account on galileo just to be able to view the .gif files. For those of you keeping score at home, yes, this is an unsubtle hint. In any case, we compared the flat vectors for tonight's flats against those taken on MJD53714, and find the levels comparable. So we are calling this effort done. Incidentally, the contents of the offending index.html file, bad links and all, are copied here in the Problems section. We attempted to copy over the idQABiasVec*, idQAFlatVec* and idMosaic* files to phoenix per the task instructions. Phoenix, however, was down. So we followed the convention we found in sdsshost2:/data/photo and made a directory called imagerTest_53744 and copied the files there. Afterward we cleaned up sdsshost2:/home/observer/imagerTest, which also contained some way old files we figure are by now archived from previous imager Cals. Shakin' PRs: PR 6831 (endNight and its components need thorough help strings): CLOSED PR 2884 (help for calcStripeParams does not describe its output): CLOSED Both Eric's PRs were resolved successfully. sdssProcedures v2_07: dayshift.html -- all links but one (pointing to PT checklist) are not working. They are still pointing to sdsshost, not sdsshost2. However, all references to tapes have been removed. specialPlates.html -- All links point to sdsshost2. AfternoonCheckout.html -- is present and works as advertised. navigate.html -- points to http://sdsshost2.apo.nmsu.edu/folklore but it is not found. MCP: We're confused by the instructions from Peregrine and are unable to reach him. We have forwarded a request to Jon Brinkmann to help us by closing the PRs. We did, however, note with respect to PR 6604 (TPM reported humidity levels are much lower than other sensors on site) that this is still very much a problem. In fact, it's broken altogether and the display in TPM is pegged at 100.0%. We did not close this PR. Steph wanted a reminder for the next shakedown in tonight's log to change the link to the TPM data archive access page on sdsshost2 front page to: http://sdsshost2.apo.nmsu.edu/tpm/Tests/cgi/dir.cgi We finished the shake tasks by about 02:30Z, leaving the rest of the night available for science. Dust remained high and we remained correspondingly closed. After 05:00Z the dust started to drop somewhat; at 05:30Z we began ventilating with the expecation we would open soon. We removed the imager and mounted a cartridge to begin with spectroscopy. The dust figured out what we were up to and spiked back to 3000 shortly after 06:00Z. We kept the enclosure doors open but the fans off until the dust started to subside again around 10:30Z. Seeing as how we were running short of time left in the night and yet oh-so-desperately wanted to get in at least a little userful observing, we decided to open once the dust dropped below 2500 counts. Mounted the imager and opened the enclosure. 10:55Z Run 5892 (SEGUE Stripe 1540 S, startMu=+149). We had a problem almost immediately with scanStripe: im> goDrift Flavor of this run (science, bias, calibration, engineering, ignore, help) []: science Stripe, Strip (e.g, 22,N or SS,N) [1540,S]: Please provide a one line comment [] Error: called "eqToStripe" with too many arguments We think this is a "feature" in the test IOP v4_10_0, so we quickly reverted back to v4_9_2 (including servers) and issued a scanStripe from there. That worked but then we had donuts in the ramp as our focus guess was not too good -- not that we had a lot of time to ventilate prior to opening. That was fixed quickly enough to recover. Skippy was happy and we were in focus by Frame 18 (Mu=+151). Science began at Frame 32 (Mu=+153). Seeing was on the hairy edge of acceptable at the start of this run. Science ended at Frame 132 (Mu=+168), and we ramped down to Frame 145 (Mu=+170). seeingRun called this run bad from the start until Frame Frame 89 (Mu=161.5), then: Acceptable 90 < Frame < 108 (161.5 < Mu < 164.5) Good 109 < Frame < 129 (164.5 < Mu < 167.5) Acceptable 130 < Frame < 145 (167.5 < Mu < 170) 12:30Z Run 5893 (On-telescope bias) We packed it in for the night at 13:00Z. endNight did a couple of backflips and yelled "yee-haw!" ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5979 23:32Z 00:37Z 100 O 170.53 -173.13 44 ignore 5980 01:04Z 01:19Z 100 O -166.39 -162.67 39 ignore 5981 01:33Z 01:49Z 100 O -159.10 -155.17 40 calibration 5982 10:58Z 12:29Z 1540 S -35.68 -12.87 165 science 5983 12:31Z 12:49Z 100 O 5.83 10.32 44 bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5982 55 4 74 0.100 0.194 3.600 0.157 -0.01069 190 39 5982 62 4 59 0.400 0.186 3.900 0.173 -0.00975 191 40 5982 125 4 49 2.100 0.213 4.200 0.168 -0.00469 199 47 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5982 66 1 41 348 22 -2.785 0.180 1.574 0.167 -0.00529 5982 66 1 41 348 23 -2.434 0.234 1.888 0.174 -0.00635 5982 66 1 41 348 19 -2.024 0.253 2.120 0.193 -0.00713 5982 66 1 41 348 23 -1.667 0.221 1.925 0.194 -0.00647 5982 66 1 41 348 13 -1.320 0.324 2.033 0.300 -0.00683 5982 82 1 43 346 14 -1.944 0.198 1.700 0.188 -0.00572 5982 82 1 43 346 24 -1.567 0.231 1.746 0.140 -0.00587 5982 82 1 43 346 21 -1.187 0.290 1.774 0.290 -0.00596 5982 82 1 43 346 17 -0.862 0.174 1.708 0.203 -0.00574 5982 82 1 43 346 16 -0.587 0.405 1.956 0.178 -0.00658 5982 134 1 48 338 15 -2.678 0.235 1.261 0.209 -0.00424 5982 134 1 48 338 13 -2.357 0.296 1.451 0.290 -0.00488 5982 134 1 48 338 14 -2.133 0.253 1.402 0.340 -0.00471 5982 134 1 48 338 13 -1.788 0.283 1.385 0.306 -0.00466 5982 134 1 48 338 18 -1.393 0.256 1.405 0.245 -0.00472 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 36415, plate -9999 ------- 23:31 36415 0.0 bias ----- sequence 36416, plate 1640 ------- 23:39 36416 0.0 bias 23:46 36417 10.0 flat 23:49 36418 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 05:44Z 6 0 1.00030 -2963 -1095 100 121 30.1 4.0 12 280 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:11Z 41 -6 13 300 (WNW) 3440 - Dusty!
