APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday January 19, 2006 (MJD 53755) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pan Night: Brewington, E. Malanushenko S. Snedden (phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ShakeDown ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Today we have had 2nd Shake Down night. At the first part of night we have had bad weather conditions, and opened late. We exercised spectrographs and guider - ok, checked Imager systems aliveness - ok, tested yestardays' pointing model - ok, finilized PT shake down PR tasks. We did not check collimation of mirrors with imager as seeing was very bad during all the night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- afternoon: Doghouse bias frames were checked and looked normal. No problems with the afternoon check. Spectrograph focus checked and adjusted back to about what it was before yesterday. Now set for around 3 C. As usual details in problem section. Cartridge 9 mounted on telescope. Night: Thick clouds, dust up to 9000 and wind up to 45 m/h, so we could not open telescope. Wait. We e-mailed the alt-test slews of the 2.5-meter to Russel as he suggested. 6:30Z start telescope ventilation; 7:10Z cartridge 6 is mounted inside inclosure because strong wind. Wind is 25-27mph, dust is still 1600, clouds, but under the opening limit. Opened. 7:30Z open the enclosure HB turned on DIMM telescope, but it starts to move inside its enclosure, and it had been turned off. HB thinks that it is related with the low temperature. 7:53 started to observe with plate 2316. There was a problem with guider. I (Howard) had a problem with my SOP session while running from my personal account. After finding and setting-up on the field of plate 2316, I could not restarted the guider. I could, however, do a gcam doread in a TCC session, which also updated the saoDisplay with a fresh image. From another SOP session on my account, I was able to start the guider, but I could not stop it. I killed both sessions and started another session with my account. This session allowed me to start the guider; however, the images did not update to the saoDisplay. I talked with Steph, and she suggested that I kill the third session too and start fresh with a forth one running as observer. That worked. Since we had clouds and bad seeing (3.5"), I later tried another SOP session running on my personal account. This one also worked okay. So, I'm not sure what happen with my pervious SOP sessions. ShakeDown task PR 6835 on PT worked and was closed. 10:30Z The Imager is mounted to check its systems aliveness. doDrift was working right. We got the following error message when starting the focusLoop. However, the focusLoop worked normally when we tried it again. "im> startFocusLoop -pause im> setFocusNkeep 200 200 im> startFocusLoop Error: Unknown handle: h1 h is not open p_shTclHandleAddrGet: unknown handle name h1. h is not open p_shTclHandleAddrGet: unknown handle name h1. while executing "vectorExprDel [set $v]" invoked from within "if [info exists $v] { vectorExprDel [set $v] }" ("foreach" body line 2) invoked from within "foreach v $vecs { if [info exists $v] { vectorExprDel [set $v] } }" invoked from within "if [catch { eval getFocusVecs $types } msg] { if !$quiet { echo "I can't make a focus plot: $msg" } foreach v $vecs { i ..." The system could set up the focus. The collimations has not been checked because bad seeing, up to 3". We run skippy several times, but it could not find stars, but after several frames it founded starts and was happy. 11:30. Switched from imaging to spectroscopy again. Cartridge 2, plate 2138. The seeing is bad, an efficiency is around 30 %. After the the cals were doen, we noticd that the spectro collimation was out of spec because of the temperature (-6.6 degrees), but it is too late. We deside to stop observations and start to close at 12:10. endNight is completed. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5986 21:45Z 22:03Z 100 O 154.68 159.04 43 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 36512, plate -9999 ------- 23:18 36512 0.0 bias ----- sequence 36513, plate 2141 ------- 23:26 36513 2.2 arc 23:29 36514 2.1 arc 23:32 36515 10.0 flat 23:35 36516 2.0 arc 23:44 36517 2.1 arc 23:46 36518 2.1 arc ----- sequence 36519, plate -9999 ------- 00:44 36519 0.0 bias ----- sequence 36520, plate 2141 ------- 00:47 36520 0.0 bias ----- sequence 36521, plate 2316 ------- 07:53 36521 10.0 flat 07:55 36522 2.0 arc 08:01 36523 10.0 flat 08:04 36524 2.0 arc ----- sequence 36525, plate -9999 ------- 08:16 36525 0.0 bias ----- sequence 36526, plate -9999 ------- 08:31 36526 0.0 bias ----- sequence 36527, plate 2316 ------- 08:46 36527 10.0 flat 08:48 36528 2.0 arc 09:19 36529 1200.2 target 09:28 36530 0.0 bias 09:36 36531 10.0 flat 09:38 36532 2.0 arc ----- sequence 36533, plate 2138 ------- 11:44 36533 10.0 flat 11:46 36534 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 08:55Z 6 2316 205.86 -0.0013 65.29 -0.0028 38.44 -0.0158 1.000080 11:58Z 2 2138 89.97 0.0017 67.71 -0.0012 256.15 0.0190 1.000040 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 23:55Z 9 0 1.00000 0 1607 350 121 30.0 2.9 27 264 08:56Z 6 2316 1.00008 -790 986 500 206 65.3 -5.5 23 300 -- 2.7 11:59Z 2 2138 1.00004 -395 1209 400 90 67.7 -6.2 12 321 -- 3.2 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:16Z 39 1 26 250 (WSW) 3569 - clouds 21:47Z 40 -1 22 241 (WSW) 2171 - 22:18Z 38 -2 25 262 (W) 7008 - 22:49Z 39 -3 37 261 (W) 4374 - 23:21Z 38 -4 28 227 (SW) 6869 - 23:53Z 37 -3 20 247 (WSW) 6810 - 00:25Z 36 -2 26 262 (W) 7909 - 01:01Z 35 -1 33 254 (WSW) 8218 - 01:33Z 34 -1 24 268 (W) 6725 - 02:05Z 34 -1 26 268 (W) 5409 - 02:37Z 33 0 27 253 (WSW) 3424 - 03:05Z 32 0 24 275 (W) 3509 - 03:38Z 32 0 26 265 (W) 3628 - 04:10Z 31 0 26 266 (W) 2352 - 04:42Z 30 1 20 270 (W) 2279 - 05:14Z 28 4 23 269 (W) 3126 - 05:46Z 27 6 20 295 (WNW) 2730 - 06:19Z 26 7 25 266 (W) 2052 - 06:51Z 26 7 18 269 (W) 1810 - 07:21Z 25 8 20 276 (W) 1592 - 07:55Z 24 8 19 267 (W) 1799 - 08:26Z 22 10 17 300 (WNW) 1326 - 08:57Z 21 9 13 295 (WNW) 1212 - 09:28Z 21 9 23 310 (NW) 1083 - 09:58Z 21 8 18 317 (NW) 1063 - 10:28Z 21 7 23 315 (NW) 950 - 11:59Z 20 3 17 333 (NNW) 749 - 12:31Z 19 0 16 355 (NNW) 535 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 06:30Z Doors Open, Fans On, Louvers Open 07:30Z Enclosure off 12:25Z Enclosure on, doors and louvers closed, fans off Telescope at 121,30,00 mount; Cart 02 plate 2138 is mounted LN2 connected; spectro were forced filled.
