APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday April 23, 2006 (MJD 53849) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Days, Observers:John Barentine, Elena Malanushenko Shannon Watters, Sloanie-In-Training(TM) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A lackluster night of persistent high clouds, few science photons making their way through them, and nary a single plate completed. We did collect partial signal on two plates, however, 2480 and 1718. Total dust exposure tonight was on order of about 35000 dust-hours, and some of it was pine pollen. Would the engineers please have a look at the glass in the morning? ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- No Problems found durning the checkout. The spectro focus is checked and no change is necassary. Focus was set for +10 deg C. Night: ------ Thin clouds over most of the sky around sunset. We opened on schedule but fought those clouds from the get-go. 02:10Z Cart 5 Plate 2480 (tile 1726, chunk 143) GSOGTF with a rotator offset of 0.025 degrees -- not bad considering last night's first cart was way off in rotation. First science exposure gives a low of 5.2 in 1200 s, with the clouds, so we continued with that exposure time. Clouds got progressively worse during exposures on this plate. We stopped around 04:00Z when the third exposure read out because we had zero efficiency on the guider, then started another exposure aboutrr 15 minutes later when efficiency improved. We aborted this exposure after 20 minutes with efficiency solidly at zero again. Our last try, just before the cart expired, resulted in an exposure of 1500 s that we declared bad for insufficient signal. After Cart 5 expired, we waited out the clouds. Around 08:10Z we noted gradual clearing and stars visible down to about 3rd magnitude by eye. We put on Cart 1 and carried on. 08:20Z Cart 1 Plate 1718 (tile 1206, chunk87) GSOGTF. We begin with (S/N)^2 of 5.4 on this plate from last night. Got one good exposure here for a low total (S/N)^2 of 9.4, but then after about 09:10Z the clouds thickened up again. We read out the second exposure early and by now could only see the brightest half-dozen or so stars with the naked eye when we checked outside. That exposure was lost -- we had to declare it bad for insufficient signal. Dust was on the rise during this time toward 6000 in the 1um bin, so we opted to close. Our cumulative dust exposure for the night was now around 35,000 dust-hours, and we saw no reason to think the sky would clear substantially or that the dust would retreat. Closed at 09:50Z. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6109 00:00Z 00:23Z 100 O -78.84 -73.16 52 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 38776, plate 1718 ------- 23:55 38776 0.0 bias 00:26 38777 10.0 flat 00:29 38778 2.0 arc 00:33 38779 2.1 arc 00:35 38780 2.1 arc ----- sequence 38781, plate 2480 ------- 12.6 11.6 12.5 12.3 02:45 38781 10.0 flat 02:47 38782 2.0 arc 03:14 38783 1200.1 target 03:37 38784 1200.1 target 04:04 38785 1424.6 target 05:21 38786 1500.1 target 05:28 38787 10.0 flat 05:30 38788 2.0 arc ----- sequence 38789, plate 1718 ------- 5.4 4.0 9.1 4.6 08:26 38789 10.0 flat 08:28 38790 2.0 arc 08:57 38791 1500.1 target 09:25 38792 1195.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:40Z 5 2480 43.14 -0.0005 68.25 0.0033 216.63 -0.0014 1.000210 08:36Z 1 1718 -20.59 -0.0001 67.16 0.0030 162.33 -0.0039 1.000270 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:40Z 5 2480 1.00021 -2074 -707 -125 43 68.3 12.4 17 252 -- 1.5 08:36Z 1 1718 1.00027 -2666 -1021 50 -21 67.2 7.6 16 274 -- 1.3 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:13Z 62 18 26 253 (WSW) -9999 - PtlyCldy 23:45Z 61 17 25 264 (W) 1385 - PtlyCldy 00:16Z 59 14 16 264 (W) 1479 - PtlyCldy 00:48Z 59 14 18 237 (WSW) 1490 - PtlyCldy 01:20Z 57 13 14 256 (WSW) 1471 - PtlyCldy 01:52Z 55 12 16 231 (SW) 1559 - PtlyCldy 02:24Z 54 11 16 257 (WSW) 3451 - PtlyCldy 02:55Z 54 11 19 244 (WSW) 3691 - PtlyCldy 03:28Z 53 10 17 244 (WSW) 2931 - PtlyCldy 03:59Z 52 7 17 266 (W) 3390 - MstlyCldy 04:29Z 51 7 14 276 (W) 3258 - MstlyCldy 05:00Z 51 5 14 258 (WSW) 3090 - MstlyCldy 05:31Z 50 5 12 268 (W) 3229 - MstlyCldy 06:01Z 49 4 11 296 (WNW) 3173 - MstlyCldy 06:35Z 48 3 16 274 (W) 3271 - MstlyCldy 07:06Z 48 3 13 268 (W) 3833 - MstlyCldy 07:38Z 47 2 10 279 (W) 4385 - MstlyCldy 08:14Z 46 2 14 267 (W) 5021 - PtlyCldy 08:45Z 45 3 15 274 (W) 4771 - PtlyCldy 09:16Z 45 3 15 303 (WNW) 4878 - MstlyCldy 09:46Z 44 5 14 295 (WNW) 6384 - MstlyCldy ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:00Z Fans on, louvers and east door open, west door cracked 01:45Z Enclosure off 09:50Z Enclosure on, fans off, louvers and doors closed Telescope is parked at 121,30 with Cart 1 (Plate 1718) mounted Counterweights at 265 No interlocks bypassed Spectro autofill reconnected Dewar weights at 10:15Z Imager: 180lbs 20 psi Spectro: 137lbs 23 psi ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v4_21_0 Watcher: v2_34_0 MCP: v6_3_1 TPM: tpm_v3_3_0 AstroDa: v15_11_1 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v2_14 SoS: v5_1_0 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A -5.8530 -5.8440 Axial B -5.6750 -5.6770 Axial C 0.9430 0.9420 Trans D -10.0030 -9.9940 Lateral E 10.3759 10.3759 Lateral F 11.9507 11.9380 GALILS Commanded: 4700. -2450. 3000. -7800. 3300. 3000.
