APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday November 6, 2008 (MJD 54777) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Elena Malanushenko (swing) Dan Oravetz Howard Brewington ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! 6 Nov 2008 54777.0 0.57 MARVELS until 07:26 (6.4 h), then BOSS/SEGUE (4.6 h) ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Added signal to plates: 3023, 3076, 3077, 3161, and 3075. The control room was VERY hot last night. We had a flat-field screen problem with cart 07; see log; temp was about 80 degrees. Cart 03 does not have the MARVEL A and B id labels on its bottom. Lost GPS? NIST sec = 1000331 (2008-11-07 05:10:02Z sdssmcp); see log or Problem Section for entire message. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ========== All systems are checked and they work properly. Spectro collimation is adjusted for -2.5C. 23:30 ventilation Cart 1 is mounted. Night: ====== 23:55Z Enclosure off, topped-off spectro secondary dewars, checked top/bottom balance, did a test slew, checked fiducial crossings for each axis, and started the DIMM. 00:07Z Sunset 01:00Z Cart 01, plate 3023-A (marvels_pre201). Completed two 25-minute exposure and a nine-minute cal. This cart does not have the MARVEL A and B labels on the bottom. 05:53Z Cart 03, plate 3077-B (oct08a). Guide stars were found with goToField. Completed a fifty-minute exposure and a nine-minute cal. 06:53Z Cart 08, plate 3075-B (oct08a). Guide stars were found with an FK5 star. The guider stopped working at about 30% into this exposure, so the exposure was aborted and restarted after the guider started working again. We completed a forty-minute exposure and a nine-minute cal. 07:25Z Moonset, we did not switch to the imager because the seeing was up and down. 08:04Z Cart 07, plate 3161 (segue). While setting up on this field, DanO's SOP session complained about an atypical state with the flat-field screen. The MCP telescope cartoon showed that the far left pedal was open when it was actually closed at the 2.5-meter. We did an inspection at the telescope and discovered that the 12 0'clock pedal had a broken closed-state switch. As a test, we cut the wires from the switch and twisted them together, which gave use a closed state but would not allow us to take an exposure. We found a replacement switch in the engTrailer and mounted mounted it on the telescope. To save time, we did not put new terminal ends on the wires, so someone will need to replace them as well as check the alignment of the switch. Sorry Wendell. About 1.5 hours were lost to this problem, but we were able to complete four science exposures. 09:43 56306 10.0 flat 09:45 56307 2.0 arc 10:19 56308 1801.0 target 10:53 56309 1800.0 target 10:56 56310 10.0 flat 10:59 56311 2.0 arc 11:36 56312 1800.0 target 12:09 56313 1800.0 target 12:12 56314 10.0 flat 12:15 56315 2.0 arc 05:10Z Watcher message: Lost GPS?
