APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday September 30, 2009 (MJD 55105) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Audrey Simmons Dan Oravetz ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- MARVELS ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Most of the night was lost to clouds; poor seeing when open. The guiderActor had another sudden disconnect when we got started in the evening. MARVELS ------- We observed: 3086B, 3087A, 3514A We completed the cloudy night calibrations as well. Please check these fibers: cart. 6, B: (107,108) Yellow 13 Red Cyan 65 (41,42) Blue 1 Black Cyan 93 ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ========= 23:45Z - Restarted the servers on MONX3. 23:47Z - Turned on ThAr lamp. 23:53Z - Started an imager bias. Something is loose or misaligned. 00:20Z - Mounted cart. 4, started ventilation, checked fiducials and mirror numbers. Night ===== 01:00Z - Opened to partly cloudy skies, started the DIMM and forced a fill from the 180L dewars. sp1 took about 10 minutes longer to fill compared to sp2. 01:19Z - MARVELS TIO-ThAr-TIO calibration sequence. Cart. 4, 3514A, FIELD1348 ************************* 01:38Z - GSOGTF. 01:43Z - Audrey had started the guider and after a number of frames she noticed her ds9 was no longer updating. She issued a `guider status' and we discovered that the guiderActor had become disconnected again. A `guider restart' did not do the trick, so she had to restart the guiderActor from stageManager. Steph was showing us some things on the sdss3 archiver and we searched through some of the keywords and it appears that this sudden guiderActor disconnect happened silently, at least with regards to the available keywords. The only clue we found was when we browsed the guiderState keyword; there were two consecutive "starting" values between 01:42 and 01:45, but no "stopping" or "off" values in between. This guiderActor failure has happened a few nights consecutively now. 01:47Z - MARVELS science exp. 02:24Z - SP1MicroNotTalking alert followed by PhaseBoot and ExecBoot alerts. We issued a couple `boss ping' commands and first noticed sp1cam was "DEAD", but then became "LIVE". Then we had to issue `boss iack', `sop restart', and then reload the controllers. Then things were back to normal. 02:39Z - MARVELS TIO-ThAr-TIO calibration sequence. Cart. 4, 3514B, FIELD1068 ************************* 02:50Z - We did not have guide stars on gotoField, but we were able to find a guide star after some small manual offsets. 02:58Z - The clouds moved in and we lost the guide star we had manually acquired. We closed the FF petals and slewed to stow position, waiting for the clouds to pass and prepared to close if necessary. 03:07Z - Started MARVELS engineering cals. 03:20Z - We put the enclosure on since the clouds thickened and looked more ominous and the wind was trending up along with the dust. We left the NE door open partway. 03:23Z - Continued with MARVELS engineering cals. 09:22Z - Mounted cart. 7 since the weather looked to be improving. 09:29Z - MARVELS TIO-ThAr-TIO calibration sequence. 09:38Z - Opened back up. Cart. 7, 3087A, HD37605 *********************** 09:41Z - No guide stars on gotoField. We manually put in offsets to acquire the field. 09:51Z - MARVELS science exp. 10:43Z - MARVELS TIO-ThAr-TIO calibration sequence.
