This directory contains information about the linelists used for APOGEE DR17. In DR17, APOGEE releases analyses with several different spectral libraries. The primary analysis was done using libraries constructed with the Synspec synthesis code, using NLTE population levels, but there were also analyses done with libraries using Synspec LTE, and two with Turbospectrum 20, one with spherical radiative transfer for giants and one with plane parallel. Both Synspec libraries (NLTE and LTE) used the same linelists, and both Turbospectrum20 libraries (spherical and pp) used the same linelists. While both Synspec and Turbospectrum20 linelists started from the same atomic data, "astrophysical" adjustments were made separately for each, using the a Synspec synthesis of the Sun and Arcturus to tune the Synspec list, and using a Turbospectrum20 synthesis of the Sun and Arcturus to tune the Turbospectrum20 list. The starting data and procedure for the tuning is described in Smith et al. (2021) and references therein. The synspec/ and turbospec/ directories contain the linelists that were used for DR17. There is a README.txt file in each that describes the linelists in a bit more detail. We provide a master APOGEE-format linelist for each, as well as the linelists in the format that the synthesis codes read them. The linelists include atomic and molecular linelists separately, and H2O linelists (which are very extensive), are separated from the other molecular line lists, because different H2O lists are used depending on Teff and [O/H]. In all cases, the linelists give wavelenghts in air.
