This directory contains raw APOGEE Laboratory Commissioning data in compressed format. The data were taken on 01/13/2011 (MJD=55574). Software: --------- The APUNZIP.PRO program is needed to uncompress the raw data. This is in the APOGEEREDUCE product. To checkout the the software you will need access to the SDSS3 trac wiki. Then do: % svn co svn+ssh://sdss3svn@sdss3.org/repo/apogee/apogeereduce/trunk apogeereduce You will also need the idlutils and idlspec2d packages. You can also install the software with sdss3install: % sdss3install apogee/apogeereduce trunk APUNZIP.PRO requires the "fpack" package for compress/uncompressing FITS files. The source code for fpack/funpack is included in the cfitsio library which is in apogeereduce/src/. sdss3install should compile the code and copy the executables fpack/funpack to apogeereduce/bin/. If the software was downloaded with svn then compile the programs with these commands: % cd apogeereduce/src/cfitsio/ % make install Then check that the executables are in apogeereduce/bin/. Basic Data Description: ----------------------- The three chips are C046 (red), C033 (middle/green), C037 (blue). The images are from red to blue on the X-axis. The chips also go from red to blue (a-red, b-middle/green, c-blue). Each chip is 2048x2048 pixels read out by four separate outputs. So each 512x2048 band of pixels is read out by a different output. There is a perimeter of reference pixels 4 pixels wide. We have found the upper reference pixels to be less reliable the ones on the left/right/bottom. It's important to use these reference pixels because there can be voltage drifts over time. Additionally, there is a fifth output that reads from a separate single reference pixel for each chip that can be used to remove structure and cross-talk. This adds 512 addition columns and makes the images 2560x2048. The five outputs are readout in different directions: 1 2 3 4 ref |---->|<----|---->|<----||---->| So the reference output information needs to be flipped in the X-direction when used to correct the 2nd and 4th output. There are some reads (about every 100 or so) when there is a hiccup in the electronics and the data gets shifted. AP3DPROC.PRO that collapses the datacubes from 3D to 2D automatically checks for these bad reads and throws them ou. The first read also has been found to often have problems (especially in the reference pixels). Collimator Focus: ----------------- The collimator has three pistons with stepper motors that can be moved independently. The positions of the motors are measured in mm from the "home" position. The "neutral position" is the assumed correct collimator position from the ZEMAX optical model and is the position the collimator was in during cool down. The neutral positions (in direction towards slit) are: Motor, distance from home (mm) 1 2.390 mm 2 2.11 mm 3 2.25 mm All collimator focus positions (i.e. in the logsheets) are measured with respect to this neutral position (in mm). The nominal best focus is at (+0.2, +0.2, +0.2). Lamps: ------- Four lamps: -ThArNe, hollow cathode lamp, made by Photron this has been set to 15 milliAmps, which is the recommended setting -Uranium Ne, hollow cathode lamp, made by Photron this has been set to 15 milliAmps, which is the recommended setting -Tungston Halogen Source, flat lamp with 20W output, made by Ocean Optics this has a shutter and for most observations is set to roughly 10% open -Krypton Penray this is just on or off A 12 inch integrating sphere is used with three ports. There is only room for one hollow cathode lamp so they need to be switched out of the same port. The fibers are placed 10 inches from the end of the sphere to get an F-ratio of f/5 which is similar to what will be achieved at APO. Fibers: -------- For these data only 4 bundles of 30 fibers were installed (eventually 10 bundles will be installed). The fiber bundles are in positions 1, 3, 6 and 10 starting at the bottom of the slithead. The fiber numbers are 1-30, 61-90, 151-180, and 271-300. The fibers are in the reverse order when projected onto the detector. There is one known broken fiber - fiber number 286, so near the middle of the fiber bundle at the bottom of the detector. Some light still comes through the fiber. Logsheet: ---------- This is the first data taken with the three APOGEE detectors installed and the cryostat cold. This is mainly test data to check that everything was working properly. Not physical logsheet was kept for this day, but comments were entered in the COMMENT field in the FITS header. The collimator focus was at the "neutral position" for these data. Here is some basic information on the files contained in this directory. This output can be obtained using the APG_LIST.PRO program. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NUM FILENAME DATE-OBS NREAD FILENAME COMMENT ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 apR-a-00000001.apz 2011-01-13T17:10:15.598 2 ColdTest000.fits long dark SUTR6 2 apR-a-00000002.apz 2011-01-13T17:10:54.538 2 ColdTest001.fits long dark SUTR6 3 apR-a-00000003.apz 2011-01-13T17:12:32.231 2 ColdTest002.fits long dark SUTR6 4 apR-a-00000004.apz 2011-01-13T17:14:03.515 2 ColdTest003.fits long dark SUTR6 5 apR-a-00000005.apz 2011-01-13T17:20:10.800 20 DarkTest000.fits Long Sequence 6 apR-a-00000006.apz 2011-01-13T17:25:20.537 2 GrndCaseJumper000.fits Long Sequence 7 apR-a-00000007.apz 2011-01-13T17:25:54.597 2 GrndCaseJumper001.fits Long Sequence 8 apR-a-00000008.apz 2011-01-13T17:29:57.043 20 GrndCaseJumper002.fits Long Sequence 9 apR-a-00000009.apz 2011-01-13T17:38:28.828 20 ThArNe000.fits Long Sequence 10 apR-a-00000010.apz 2011-01-13T17:42:08.696 20 ThArNe001.fits Long Sequence 11 apR-a-00000011.apz 2011-01-13T17:51:32.811 20 Flat000.fits Long Sequence 12 apR-a-00000012.apz 2011-01-13T17:58:27.808 10 KrPenray000.fits Long Sequence 13 apR-a-00000013.apz 2011-01-13T18:46:51.304 2 NewDeinterlace000.fits Exposure Comment 14 apR-a-00000014.apz 2011-01-13T18:50:06.479 10 NewDeinterlace001.fits Exposure Comment 15 apR-a-00000015.apz 2011-01-13T18:57:59.612 20 NewDeinterlace002.fits FlatLamps to check DI 16 apR-a-00000016.apz 2011-01-13T19:02:50.980 20 NewDeinterlace003.fits ThArNe to check DI 17 apR-a-00000017.apz 2011-01-13T19:17:40.725 10 KrPenrayNewDI000.fits ThArNe to check DI ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
