APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday October 20, 2001 (MJD 52203) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing, night: Steph Snedden, Pete Newman (APO) (and thanks to the intrepid plate pluggers in advance!) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science: spectroscopy until moonset (21:40 MDT), then imaging if possible. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clouds or variable seeing dictated spectroscopy all night. 7 plate done (645, 685, 688, 698, 710, 716, 719). No new problems, but some known hassles revisited. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Patchy high clouds at sunset. Continued orographic clouds above 30 deg elevation in the east until 01:00 MDT then poor seeing as a front passed through prevented a change to imaging under largely clear sky. The flat-field screens are still not right. When trying to go up from 6 deg to 30 deg after opening, the alt axis aborted at 19 deg because of a FFS permission. Banging on the 6 o'clock petal (which we could reach) cured it. Nnote that after pulling slightly on the same petal, the motor ran, pulling the petal down hard and slipping the clutch for ~10 seconds. Alt then ran. We guess that is a temporary solution, although we do not like running the motor against the clutch excessively. SoS again failed reducing one frame (sdR-b2-00011371.fit), and sos_redo plate= 645 also failed (PR 2651 updated). Removing the corresponding files from sos:/ data/spectro/52203 by hand got SoS to try again successfully. SoS also recommended postCalibs on several smear exposures, but we had already removed the cartridge before the request was made. Are postCalibs justified for smears? We found guide stars with every gotoField: NICE pointing model, NICE fiducials! We saw only occasional 'failed to read latch position' errors and silly axis corrections all night, none causing a problem. This is back to standard operating conditions. Very short slews (e.g. after changing or clearing calibration) continue to produce rotator acceleration errors. PR2682 updated. We lost 20 minutes in plate 685 when the telescope silently halted (mcpMenu showed no problems, but TCCMON showed axes halted). This was another occurance of PR2437 (TCC/MCP time-out), which was put back from needstest to assigned. As the guider also halted, the guider monitor was showing a good (but frozen) image with fine seeing and fine efficiency, which fooled this observer for far too long. A TCC track command and restarting the guider (twice) got going again. The same problem recurred during plate 710, with only a few minutes lost. PR priority raised to high. See problem section #1 for messages. See telescope status setction regarding axis slip. Observing sequence: 19:20 Plate 716, cartridge 8. Done in 1 exposure. Required (S/N)^2 > 4 in R2 plus a smear to finish exposures started MJD 52202. SoS 'large flexure' warning on smear exposure ignored. 20:16 Plate 645, cartridge 2. Done in 3 exposures. A large scale error (0. 007 per cent) was left uncorrected by mistake during the last exposure. The the distribution of S/N across the plate in the SoS plot looks good in the B cameras, and acceptable in the R cameras. SoS 'large flexure' warning on smear exposure again ignored. 21:44 Plate 719, cartridge 9. Done in 3 exposures. 23:00 Plate 685, cartridge 1. Done in 3 exposures, plus one ruined by axes halting. Excellent seeing, but occasional cloud. 00:48 Plate 688, cartridge 6. Done in 3 exposure. Seeing degraded as a new front passed. Last exposure beyond design time but (S/N)^2 all > 14. 02:15 Plate 698, cartridge 3. Done in 3 exposures. Seeing further degraded to > 2 arcsec but mostly clear. Minimum (S/N)^2 13.2 in R1, but SoS reports ' whopping fiber' so final (S/N)^2 should be better. 03:48 Plate 710, cartridge 4. Done in 3 exposures. Seeing variable under thin clouds. Axes again halted at ~04:44 MDT during third exposure (same problem as for plate 685), but only 60 seconds of drift, so exposure rescued. Total (S/N)^2 from SoS marginal (>= 13.2), but declared done. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2670 100 O ignore 71.08 80.31 71 doghouse bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 11364, plate -9999 ------- 22:13 11364 0.0 bias ----- sequence 11365, plate 716 ------- 17.7 18.3 17.3 16.4 DONE (total) 01:11 11365 10.0 flat 01:14 11366 2.0 arc 02:01 11367 1202.0 target 7.0 7.5 7.0 6.8 (this exposure) 02:08 11368 240.0 smear ----- sequence 11369, plate 645 ------- 16.9 15.1 16.3 15.1 DONE 02:23 11369 10.0 flat 02:25 11370 2.0 arc 02:52 11371 1001.0 target 03:09 11372 900.0 target 03:30 11373 1100.0 target 03:37 11374 240.0 smear ----- sequence 11375, plate 719 ------- 18.7 16.8 16.0 16.3 DONE 03:48 11375 10.0 flat 03:50 11376 2.0 arc 04:14 11377 901.0 target 04:32 11378 901.0 target 04:46 11379 701.0 target 04:52 11380 240.0 smear ----- sequence 11381, plate 685 ------- 15.3 15.2 21.7 17.9 DONE 05:04 11381 10.0 flat 05:06 11382 2.0 arc 05:31 11383 901.0 target 05:47 11384 801.0 target Do not use!
