APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday December 9, 2001 (MJD 52253) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek (APO) Pete Newman (APO) Steve Kent (FNAL; by phone) Craig Loomis (APO; by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Amidst a sea of problems, we managed to complete the cross-scan perpendicular to the equatorial stripe, 82 N from lambda +158 to +168 and lambda -178 to -168 and two plates (758, 557). We also got data on another plate (568). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Photometric skies and a favorable wind dictated that we begin with imaging. The imager was mounted and the on-telescope bias was taken after sunset in the enclosure with the doors closed and the lights off. Landru crashed while preparing for the first imaging scan (around 0100) after Pete had tried to run help from a Landru xterm window that was logged onto sdsshost. Rather than calling Craig L. to get Landru back up and running, Pete elected to run from monx2 for the remainder of the evening. Landru remains down with a disk error on the root partition. We attempted the cross-scan perpendicular to the equatorial stripe but found that the stars were oblong (stretched in the scan direction). We called Steve Kent who discovered we had been given an old scan velocity and he gave us the new one (4.178e-3). We completed the cross-scan. Since the cross-scan was not part of the survey area, endDrift produced errors (see the problem section) and failed to include these two runs in the imaging summary section of the log (the missing info was typed in by hand). We then went on to 82 N. The first attempt was spoiled by an axis abort caused by a large offset entered in error - see PR 2967. The second attempt (run 2768) had a long stretch of bad seeing in it. About half way through this stretch, we debated on whether or not to switch to spectroscopy. A look through the plug plate data base showed that the only plate available at that time was a plate we have reobserved many times already (412) and so we decided to keep the imager on for a while and hope for improved seeing. The seeing did improve and we obtained more usable data. Around 0542 the servers crashed. At this time we noticed that there were many error messages in the 'unexpected' section of logviewer (see the problems section below). We called Craig Loomis who helped us determine the problem was caused by a PVTME link error and helped us get the servers back up. The crash of the servers coincided with the arrival of clouds. The imaging scan continued well past the arrival of clouds both because we were working on the server problem and also because we could not end the drift (iop was hung due to this problem). The solution to the endDrift problem was to do a PTVME reset (as given in the PTVME debugging instructions found on the web) before ending the drift. Unfortunately, we attempted to end the drift before doing this and ended up hanging that iop session and ALL those brought up after this. Fortunately, we found an iop session already running on another machine that was not corrupted and were able to end the drift after resetting the PTVME link. The PTVME problem that brought down the servers also stopped gang transfer at frame 248. However, clouds arrived at about the same time so the data are not photometric anyway. Note that at the time of this writing (nearly 3 hours after the servers crashed) any iop session that is brought up still takes about 10 minutes to return a prompt. Once it gives a prompt it seems to work ok though. The sop sessions opened up after the problem seem to work ok. After ending the drift we switched to spectroscopy. Upon bringing the counterweights up to 280, we heard a loud clunk from counterweight number 3. Inspection of the system showed the counterweight to be at approximately the correct location. Testing of the counterweight showed that it could be driven down ok but it barely moved when being driven up. The telescope was in good balance with this counterweight at its current position and did not seem to move when we slewed the telescope up and down in altitude so we decided to proceed with spectroscopy. PR 2968 was filed against this problem. Note that this counterweight can NOT be put in the position necessary to balance the imager until it is fixed. Cartridge 1, plate 758 was done in 3 exposures. Instchange appeared to fail because the altitude was above 80 degrees when the command was issued. PR 2969 was filed. Cartridge 7, plate 557 was done in 2 exposures (there were data and a smear from the previous night). We attempted cartridge 8, plate 568 but clouds came in and the seeing deteriorated and we were unable to finish this plate even though we pushed it nearly half an hour passed its maximum observable time. We did get some good data for it though. Twilight arrived. The stopped gang tranfer caused by the PTVME link problem did not appear to affect endNight as it seemed to complete normally. The grade 2 N2 (orange bottle) pressure was at 1500 psi (down from 1900 psi last night) so it looks like there is still a small leak. Spectrograph chiller pressure was sitting at 42 at the end of the night. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2763 100 O ignore 130.19 134.41 31 doghouse 2764 100 O bias 149.97 154.89 47 good 2765 115 O ignore none none cross-scan with wrong track rate 2766 115 O engineering none none 91 cross-scan calibration test Jen, please reduce this run (2766) even though it's labeled engineering. 2767 82 N ignore 157.71 162.31 43 altitude aborted 2768 82 N science 157.60 -149.18 380 some good data ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- Run 2766 - Cross-scan perpendicular to the equatorial stripe.
