APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday September 2, 2002 (MJD 52520) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Jurek Krzesinski Night: Atsuko Nitta, Pete Newman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Start slightly delayed by cloud, then six plates finished (670, 728, 739, 988, 1058, 1083). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Spectrographs focus and collimation checked during the afternoon and found to be ok. Variable heavy cloud from before sunset unti laround 0200Z after which it cleared rapidly to occasional thin cloud. We continue to get dead moths all over the altitude drive and encoder wheels, and more between the preflight checks and opening. Note to observers: if you clean the drive surfaces, please also clean the encoder wheels, which can get quite thick lumps attached. The offsets needed to acquire guide stars seems rather haywire with the current pointing model, varying from ~0 arcsec to ~12 arcsec in both alt and az. We lost ~ 5 minutes loading cartridge 7 when the east-most cover fell off the cartridge and jammed between the Lindy cart and the lift. The cover's latches seemed ok, and it went back on without damage. Observing sequence: 02:59Z Plate 1058, cartridge 4. Done in 3 exposures. FK5 star needed to fix pointing, but that was starting with last night's offsets. 04:26Z Plate 989, cartridge 1. Done in 3 exposures. FK5 was already in fiber 10 once offsets were cleared. 06:19Z Plate 728, cartridge 5. Done in 3 exposures. Guide stars seen just off the fibers on gotoField with offsets from last plate. Fiber 326 has a very bright object showing pink on the image display. We checked the SoS reduced spectrum. To my (untrained) eye, it looks like the superposition of a galaxy with a blue star. The maximum counts to be ~13000, so we trust the image is not saturated and is therefore reducible. 07:57Z Plate 739, cartridge 2. Done in 3 exposures. FK5 needed. 09:24Z Plate 670, cartridge 9. Done in 2 exposures when added to prior nights' data. Guide stars on gotoField. 10:36Z Plate 1083, cartridge 7. Done in 3 exposures. Guide stars on gotoField. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3319 22:18Z 22:35Z 100 O 25.77 29.90 42 ignore doghouse bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 16120, plate 1058 ------- 15.9 15.3 14.9 17.2 DONE 03:16 16120 10.0 flat 03:19 16121 2.0 arc 03:38 16122 900.0 target 03:56 16123 900.0 target 04:14 16124 900.0 target 04:21 16125 240.0 smear ----- sequence 16126, plate 988 ------- 16.2 14.9 14.7 16.2 DONE 04:41 16126 10.0 flat 04:43 16127 2.0 arc 05:11 16128 1200.0 target 05:39 16129 1501.0 target 06:07 16130 1500.0 target 06:15 16131 240.0 smear ----- sequence 16132, plate 728 ------- 18.1 16.9 15.6 17.1 DONE 06:34 16132 10.0 flat 06:37 16133 2.0 arc 06:59 16134 901.0 target 07:22 16135 1202.0 target 07:45 16136 1200.0 target 07:53 16137 240.0 smear ----- sequence 16138, plate 739 ------- 17.6 14.9 17.8 17.3 DONE 08:09 16138 10.0 flat 08:11 16139 2.0 arc 08:30 16140 901.0 target 08:48 16141 900.0 target 09:12 16142 1202.0 target 09:19 16143 240.0 smear ----- sequence 16144, plate 670 ------- 11.8 11.2 10.6 14.5 DONE 09:37 16144 10.0 flat plus 19.1 19.8 17.4 23.6 09:40 16145 2.0 arc plus 6.1 5.2 5.8 6.8 10:01 16146 901.0 target ------------------- 10:20 16147 901.0 target Total ---- 36.2 ---- 44.9 10:27 16148 240.0 smear ----- sequence 16149, plate 1083 ------- 13.6 14.8 16.0 14.8 DONE 10:43 16149 10.0 flat 10:46 16150 2.0 arc 11:05 16151 900.0 target 11:23 16152 900.0 target 11:41 16153 901.0 target 11:49 16154 240.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Apologies for the incomplete data here - didn't press the right button at the right time. 07:31Z 5 728 -59.26 0.0006 53.59 -0.0011 132.65 0.0000 1.000050 10:02Z 9 670 -19.39 0.0039 55.69 0.0003 163.77 0.0016 1.000170 11:01Z 7 1083 -43.89 0.0022 48.30 0.0015 144.30 -0.0204 1.000140 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5497 Stays: JL5498 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:24Z 4 1058 1.00013 -1283 -152 -250 -102 56.7 15.5 12 113 BG38 2.0 07:31Z 5 728 1.00005 -493 511 -250 -59 53.6 14.1 9 98 BG38 2.0 10:02Z 9 670 1.00017 -1678 -546 -320 -19 55.7 14.6 1 120 BG38 1.7 11:01Z 7 1083 1.00014 -1381 -278 -320 -44 48.3 14.2 4 110 BG38 2.0 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 03:32Z 59 39 13 115 (ESE) 533 - Partly cloudy 04:05Z 59 37 12 103 (ESE) 506 - " 04:36Z 58 37 14 115 (ESE) 518 - " 05:08Z 57 38 12 113 (ESE) 570 - " 05:41Z 58 38 18 125 (SE) 606 - " 06:13Z 57 38 16 118 (ESE) 522 - " 06:46Z 57 38 9 102 (ESE) 543 - " 07:18Z 57 37 8 102 (ESE) 537 - Photometric 07:50Z 56 37 9 102 (ESE) 502 - "" 08:20Z 57 37 7 101 (E) 493 - " 08:51Z 57 37 9 110 (ESE) 490 - " 09:23Z 58 37 5 102 (ESE) 620 - " 09:53Z 58 37 0 118 (ESE) 620 - " 10:24Z 58 37 5 105 (ESE) 548 - " 10:55Z 57 37 6 108 (ESE) 625 - " 11:28Z 57 37 4 52 (NE) 578 - " 12:01Z 57 37 7 11 (N) 604 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 02:10Z Fans on, doors open 02:40Z Enclosure off 12:00Z Enclosure on, fans off Status at 12:20Z: Telescope stowed at: 30 deg Instrument mounted: Cartridge 3 Counterweights at: 280 Autofill systems: On 180L LN2 dewar weights: Spectro 83 lb Imager 327 lb Interlocks bypassed: Alt slip, az slip.
