APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday January 10, 2003 (MJD 52650) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek (APO) Pete Newman (APO) Howard Brewington (APO; swing) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- One plate finished (1188) and good data obtained for another two plates (811, 1193). Photometric much of the night but the moon and then variable seeing prevented imaging. Much of the night was lost to high humidity. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Photometric at sunset but the moon dictates spectroscopy. Plate 1130 (cartridge 1): Used an FK5 star to acquire guide stars due to bright (twilight) conditions. With last night's offsets cleared, the FK5 star was easily found. The proximity of this plate to the moon made it difficult to acquire usable data. Even when the (S/N)^2 values were > 2 for all spectrographs, there was a red SKY/SEC value for one spectrograph in every exposure. Thus, all data for this plate were declared bad. We would have switched to another plate immediately but the other plate available at this time was even closer to the moon than this one. We billed this "moon" time to "other weather problem" in the time tracker. Plate 811 (cartridge 3): Guide stars on the gotoField. The first 20 minute exposure yielded good data. The second exposure was cut short when we had to close for high humidity (0350Z) and is worthless. Opened again at 0710Z. Plate 1188 (cartridge 5): Guide stars on the gotoField. Done in 3 exposures (45 minutes total). Variable seeing prevented a switch to imaging. Plate 1193 (cartridge 6): A guide star on the gotoField. Got one good exposure before having to close again for high humidity (0930Z). We did not reopen. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 18013, plate -9999 ------- 00:18 18013 0.0 bias 00:52 18014 0.0 bias ----- sequence 18015, plate 1130 ------- 01:26 18015 10.0 flat 01:29 18016 2.0 arc 01:55 18017 1200.1 target bad due to moon 02:19 18018 1200.1 target bad due to moon 02:42 18019 1200.1 target bad due to moon ----- sequence 18020, plate 811 ------- 03:12 18020 10.0 flat 03:15 18021 2.0 arc 03:40 18022 1200.1 target 4.3 6.1 4.1 5.3 03:53 18023 512.6 target bad ----- sequence 18024, plate 1188 ------- 07:34 18024 10.0 flat 07:37 18025 2.0 arc 07:57 18026 900.1 target 08:15 18027 900.1 target 08:33 18028 900.1 target 08:40 18029 240.0 smear 23.9 20.5 25.5 22.3 DONE ----- sequence 18030, plate 1193 ------- 08:58 18030 10.0 flat 09:01 18031 2.0 arc 09:19 18032 750.1 target 8.3 6.9 8.2 8.5 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:33Z 1 1130 -26.12 0.0028 54.33 0.0017 158.22 0.0104 0.999910 03:19Z 3 811 -11.93 0.0047 56.64 0.0019 169.93 0.0026 1.000040 07:42Z 5 1188 21.74 0.0031 60.08 0.0017 198.13 -0.0109 1.000270 09:06Z 6 1193 -6.89 0.0054 62.45 0.0035 174.13 0.0039 1.000160 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5897 Stays: JL5898 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:31Z 1 1130 0.99994 591 1657 0 -25 54.5 0.1 12 207 --- 2.5" 02:38Z 1 1130 0.99991 888 1930 0 -48 46.0 0.9 16 209 --- 1.8" 03:18Z 3 811 1.00004 -394 814 -20 -12 56.7 0.5 13 189 --- 1.8" 07:42Z 5 1188 1.00027 -2665 -1130 -75 22 60.0 1.0 8 222 --- 1.7" 07:52Z 5 1188 1.00027 -2665 -1156 -100 17 60.8 0.8 9 262 --- 1.7" 09:06Z 6 1193 1.00016 -1579 -232 -70 -7 62.4 1.0 7 194 --- 1.6" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:49Z 35 18 4 260 (W) 133 - clear 00:21Z 32 20 11 215 (SW) 213 - " 00:52Z 32 18 15 209 (SSW) 148 - " 01:23Z 32 18 9 194 (SSW) 139 - " 01:54Z 33 17 10 204 (SSW) 188 - " 02:25Z 33 18 14 222 (SW) 226 - " 02:57Z 33 21 11 216 (SW) 269 - " 03:27Z 32 24 13 201 (SSW) 281 - light clouds 03:58Z 32 29 12 198 (SSW) 292 - clouds, humidity 04:30Z 32 28 10 190 (S) 242 - high humidity 05:02Z 32 29 11 171 (S) 217 - " " 05:34Z 32 27 9 183 (S) 221 - " " 06:06Z 31 27 7 181 (S) 297 - " " 06:38Z 33 23 2 185 (S) 253 - " " 07:11Z 33 20 7 222 (SW) 208 - clear 07:41Z 33 21 7 255 (WSW) 146 - " 08:11Z 33 24 8 280 (W) 161 - " 08:41Z 33 23 6 255 (WSW) 144 - " 09:12Z 33 26 9 264 (W) 161 - " 09:42Z 32 27 8 226 (SW) 189 - high humidity 10:12Z 33 28 7 265 (W) 185 - " " 10:42Z 33 28 10 267 (W) 187 - " " 11:12Z 33 27 7 268 (W) 180 - " " 11:43Z 33 26 6 268 (W) 156 - " " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:30 Doors open, fans on 00:30 Enclosure off 03:50 Enclosure on, doors closed, fans off due to high humidity. 07:10 Doors open, fans on 07:15 Enclosure off 09:30 Enclosure on, doors closed, fans off due to high humidity.
