APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday February 6, 2003 (MJD 52677) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Howard Brewington (APO) night: Scot Kleinman (APO) Mike Harvanek (APO) visitors: Rich Kron (FNAL, UC) Steph Snedden (APO) - DIMM work Armin Rest (CTIO) - DIMM work Atsuko Nitta (APO) Jurek Krzesinski (APO) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Data on two plates (1247, 1210). Plate 1247 may be done but it will remain plugged until we are told for certain that it is done. Some science time lost due to a problem with spectrograph recollimation. Half the night lost due to clouds. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: During day shift, I checked the focus of the spectrographs; all four cameras were reported by IDL as in-focus. Although sp1 wanted a mechPiston of -1309 and sp2 wanted a mechPiston of -384, I made no adjustments. At the time of these focus procedures, m1's temp= 3.17C. The final col-motor numbers (A to C) were: sp1=1757, 1757, 554 ; sp2=3636,3636,3636. Night shift: Photometric at sunset but the moon is up so we begin with spectroscopy. Got the following watcher error on the initial telescope move: rotator ((throttle) MJD CONT id = 7 djm = 52677 (2003-02-07 01:06:49Z sdssmcp): 2003-02-07 01:06:56Z) Plate 1247 (cartridge 2): Used an FK5 star to acquire guide stars due to bright (twilight) conditions. When combined with previous data (52675), we achieved the required (S/N)^2 > 15 for R only in three 30 minute exposures. However, as per the discussion over the last two days, (S/N)^2 values for the blue cameras are substantially lower than those for the red cameras. If we declare this plate done and unplug it and then find out that the blue (S/N)^2 is insufficient, we end up losing all the data (and time spent) on this plate. Thus, we will leave this plate plugged until we hear otherwise. Could someone knowledgeable about the Orion plates (Peregrine?) please have a look at this data ASAP and let us know if we can declare it done? Thanks. Got the following watcher error: rotator (throttled 2 -- MJD CONT id = 7 djm = 52677 (2003-02-07 03:45:35Z sdssmcp): 2003-02-07 03:45:53Z) Plate 1210 (cartridge 3): Guide stars on the gotoField. We did a science frame before preCals as per the "more efficent" method of spectro observing. As luck would have it, we found out the spectrographs were out of collimation when we did the preCal. We proceeded to run goSpecFocus and collimate but ran into a problem when we attempted to focus sp1. The mechPiston command moved A properly but moved B only partially, moved C not at all, and returned with an error message. The numbers and error message can be found in the Problems section. The proper positions for B and C were obtained using the mechMoveColl command. The mechPiston command worked ok for sp2. We ran another goSpecFocus and collimate and had to move the b1 focus ring by +16 degrees. The preCal showed everthing to be in spec and we proceeded with science observations. We declared the science exposure taken before the collimation (19198) to be bad. However, there is substantial signal on this exposure so perhaps someone should check this frame to see if it is of any use. After the collimation, we were able to obtain 2 decent science exposures before we closed due to heavy clouds. Snow flurries followed but then it started to clear. We opened again at 0850Z and it began to cloud up almost immediately. We made an attempt at the next cartridge anyway. Plate 1005 (cartridge 6): Used an FK5 star to acquire guide stars due to clouds. A 20 minute exposure was worthless. We closed again due to heavy clouds. We never reopened. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3656 21:01Z 21:05Z 100 O 161.08 162.17 21 ignore 3657 21:49Z 21:54Z 100 O 173.18 174.32 22 bias 3658 22:07Z 22:21Z 100 O -182.46 -178.75 39 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 19180, plate -9999 ------- 22:01 19180 0.0 bias ----- sequence 19181, plate 1247 ------- 22:55 19181 10.0 flat 22:57 19182 2.0 arc 23:01 19183 0.0 bias 23:05 19184 0.0 bias 23:08 19185 2.1 arc 23:11 19186 2.1 arc ----- sequence 19187, plate -9999 ------- 00:02 19187 0.0 bias ----- sequence 19188, plate 1247 ------- 00:10 19188 0.0 bias ----- sequence 19189, plate -9999 ------- 00:28 19189 0.0 bias ----- sequence 19190, plate 1247 ------- 01:47 19190 10.0 flat 01:49 19191 2.0 arc 02:25 19192 1800.1 target 02:58 19193 1800.1 target 03:31 19194 1800.1 target 7.7 10.1 11.7 10.2 tonight 03:39 19195 240.0 smear 5.3 2.4 5.1 52675 03:42 19196 10.0 flat ------------------ 03:44 19197 2.0 arc 7.7 15.4 14.1 15.3 DONE? ----- sequence 19198, plate 1210 ------- 04:21 19198 1200.1 target out of collimation but good signal 04:24 19199 10.0 flat collimating the spectros 04:26 19200 2.0 arc " " " 04:43 19201 2.0 arc " " " 04:45 19202 2.0 arc " " " 05:02 19203 2.1 arc " " " 05:04 19204 2.1 arc " " " 05:24 19205 10.0 flat 05:26 19206 2.0 arc 05:51 19207 1200.1 target 06:14 19208 1200.1 target 11.2 10.6 10.2 7.7 ----- sequence 19209, plate 1005 ------- 09:14 19209 10.0 flat 09:17 19210 2.0 arc 09:40 19211 1200.1 target useless ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:56Z 2 1247 44.32 0.0024 48.03 -0.0010 215.91 -0.0007 1.000320 03:06Z 2 1247 18.39 0.0024 55.86 -0.0010 195.33 -0.0007 1.000180 04:03Z 3 1210 102.88 0.0006 56.02 -0.0030 -100.21 0.0083 1.000320 04:18Z 3 1210 101.91 0.0006 59.16 -0.0030 -98.91 0.0083 1.000200 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL6009 Stays: JL6010 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:57Z 2 1247 1.00032 -3159 -1179 250 44 48.2 -4.9 19 192 gdr 2.0" 02:30Z 2 1247 1.00032 -3159 -1293 150 33 52.6 -4.6 17 188 --- 1.6" 03:05Z 2 124 1.00018 -1776 -258 50 19 55.8 -4.6 11 181 --- 1.4" 04:03Z 3 1210 1.00032 -3159 -1503 -50 103 56.1 -4.6 9 178 --- 2.0" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 20:13Z 29 8 9 263 (W) 581 - clear 20:45Z 27 6 9 276 (W) 301 - " 21:17Z 28 6 6 266 (W) 293 - " 21:49Z 31 9 8 228 (SW) 257 - " 22:22Z 29 5 10 256 (WSW) 274 - " 22:54Z 28 2 10 217 (SW) 224 - " 23:26Z 27 2 12 201 (SSW) 207 - " 00:19Z 26 2 12 209 (SSW) 286 - " 00:50Z 24 8 15 185 (S) 416 - " 01:22Z 23 7 14 178 (S) 558 - " 01:54Z 23 6 19 190 (S) 459 - " 02:27Z 23 5 18 192 (SSW) 511 - " 02:59Z 23 5 13 177 (S) 484 - " 03:32Z 23 5 14 174 (S) 528 - " 04:03Z 23 6 9 178 (S) 508 - " 04:36Z 24 7 14 181 (S) 611 - " 05:07Z 23 8 16 183 (S) 716 - " 05:39Z 24 8 15 203 (SSW) 533 - pcl 06:09Z 24 9 13 195 (SSW) 513 - " 06:41Z 24 10 17 204 (SSW) 565 - " 07:13Z 23 12 14 194 (SSW) 673 - " , snow flurries 07:45Z 24 13 13 185 (S) 554 - " 08:18Z 23 11 14 172 (S) 642 - " 08:50Z 24 11 17 198 (SSW) 471 - " 09:21Z 24 12 12 198 (SSW) 497 - " 09:54Z 23 12 14 196 (SSW) 463 - " 10:26Z 24 14 16 210 (SSW) 476 - " 10:58Z 23 14 13 212 (SSW) 499 - " 11:31Z 23 15 9 217 (SW) 480 - " 12:03Z 23 16 12 217 (SW) 503 - " pcl = partly cloudy ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:30Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 00:40Z Enclosure off. 06:40Z Enclosure on (heavy clouds). 07:05Z Doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed (snow flurries). 08:50Z Enclosure doors opened, fans on, louvers opened, enclosure off. 09:40Z Enclosure on (heavy clouds). 11:30Z Doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed.
