APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday February 25, 2003 (MJD 52696) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Jurek Krzesinski night: Dan Long, Pete Newman, Howard Brewington ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We were closed all night due to clouds and humidity with a dash of enchantment thrown in at the start of the night. We are in the seventh day of the shutout. We took this time to collect data on spectrograph focus variation with rotator and altitude position. In short this doesn't appear to be a significant effect except for b1, but if one wanted to try and pick a sweet spot to focus it looks like somewhere between 0 and 30 degrees rotation is best. Spectrograph 2 is complaining of a timeout waiting for the close sensor on the shutter at elevations of 10 and 90 degrees. PR 4872 filed. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: DA - checked, ok. Spectro guider - works, Mirrors - good. Spectrographs - out of focus (ambient t=3.7 C). sp1 sp2 Coll_motor_A 1407 Coll_motor_A 3682 Coll_motor_B 1408 Coll_motor_B 3678 Coll_motor_C 205 Coll_motor_C 3680 focusing: sp1> mechPiston 1463, sp2> mechPiston 1352 in focus after that. Night: Howard came in and helped collect data on spectrograph focus variation with rotator and altitude position. We took data at an altitude of 10 degrees and 90 degrees. goSpecFocus was run at 30 degree increments of rotation for a full revolution. At an elevation of 10 degrees the mean offset data for the cameras indicate that the red cameras show very little change with rotator position (~.07 pixels peak-to-peak). b2 shows somewhat more (.16 pixels peak-to-peak). This is all essentially sinusoidal as would be expected due to flexure from gravity. b1 however exhibits a much larger amplitude (.4 pixels peak-to-peak) and it has a bit more of a square wave shape with a bit of hysteresis, indicative of something a little loose somewhere flopping back and forth. At 90 degrees elevation there was little motion with variations of .04 pixels peak-to-peak being typical of all cameras. The mean offset data is tabulated below. It seems a similar problem to what happened with spectrograph 1 a while ago, especially considering the atypical altitude positions at which the data were taken. This is probably the reason why the exposure times are listed as zero in many of the frames. There was clearly signal on the frames, they looked normal to us and to SoS. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3686 22:34Z 22:48Z 100 O -156.96 -153.26 39 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 19382, plate -9999 ------- 22:35 19382 0.0 bias 22:55 19383 0.0 bias ----- sequence 19384, plate 1210 ------- 23:11 19384 0.0 bias 23:15 19385 10.0 flat 23:18 19386 2.0 arc 23:21 19387 2.1 arc 23:24 19388 2.1 arc 23:41 19389 2.1 arc 23:43 19390 2.1 arc ----- sequence 19391, plate -9999 ------- 01:24 19391 0.0 bias ----- sequence 19392, plate 1210 ------- 01:46 19392 0.0 arc 01:48 19393 0.0 arc 01:57 19394 1.9 arc 01:59 19395 2.1 arc 02:06 19396 2.1 arc 02:08 19397 2.1 arc 02:14 19398 2.1 arc 02:17 19399 2.1 arc 02:25 19400 2.1 arc 02:27 19401 2.1 arc 02:33 19402 2.1 arc 02:35 19403 2.1 arc 02:41 19404 0.0 arc 02:44 19405 1.9 arc 02:50 19406 0.0 arc 02:53 19407 0.0 arc 02:59 19408 0.0 arc 03:02 19409 0.0 arc 03:08 19410 0.0 arc 03:10 19411 0.0 arc 03:17 19412 0.0 arc 03:19 19413 0.0 arc 03:26 19414 0.0 arc 03:29 19415 0.0 arc 03:35 19416 0.0 arc 03:38 19417 0.0 arc 03:44 19418 0.0 arc 03:46 19419 0.0 arc 03:52 19420 0.0 arc 03:55 19421 0.0 arc 04:01 19422 0.0 arc 04:04 19423 0.0 arc 04:10 19424 0.0 arc 04:13 19425 0.0 arc 04:19 19426 0.0 arc 04:22 19427 0.0 arc 04:28 19428 1.9 arc 04:31 19429 0.0 arc 04:38 19430 1.9 arc 04:41 19431 2.1 arc 04:47 19432 2.1 arc 04:50 19433 2.1 arc 04:58 19434 2.1 arc 05:00 19435 2.1 arc 05:07 19436 2.1 arc 05:10 19437 2.1 arc 05:16 19438 2.1 arc 05:18 19439 2.1 arc 05:25 19440 0.0 arc 05:27 19441 0.0 arc 05:43 19442 0.0 arc 05:46 19443 0.0 arc 05:52 19444 0.0 arc 05:54 19445 0.0 arc 06:00 19446 0.0 arc 06:03 19447 0.0 arc 06:10 19448 0.0 arc 06:12 19449 0.0 arc 06:19 19450 0.0 arc 06:21 19451 0.0 arc 06:28 19452 0.0 arc 06:30 19453 0.0 arc 06:37 19454 0.0 arc 06:39 19455 0.0 arc 06:47 19456 0.0 arc 06:50 19457 0.0 arc 06:57 19458 0.0 arc 06:59 19459 0.0 arc 07:06 19460 0.0 arc 07:08 19461 0.0 arc 07:14 19462 0.0 arc 07:17 19463 0.0 arc 07:23 19464 0.0 arc 07:26 19465 0.0 arc 07:32 19466 0.0 arc 07:35 19467 0.0 arc 07:41 19468 0.0 arc 07:44 19469 0.0 arc 07:51 19470 0.0 arc 07:54 19471 0.0 arc 08:01 19472 0.0 arc 08:03 19473 0.0 arc 08:10 19474 0.0 arc 08:12 19475 0.0 arc 08:19 19476 0.0 arc 08:21 19477 0.0 arc 08:28 19478 0.0 arc 08:31 19479 0.0 arc 08:36 19480 0.0 arc 08:39 19481 0.0 arc 08:45 19482 0.0 arc 08:48 19483 0.0 arc 08:54 19484 0.0 arc 08:57 19485 0.0 arc 09:03 19486 0.0 arc 09:06 19487 0.0 arc 09:14 19488 0.0 arc 09:17 19489 0.0 arc 09:23 19490 0.0 arc 09:25 19491 0.0 arc ----- sequence 19392, plate 1210 ------- 09:59 19492 2.0 ignore ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JLCloudy1 Stays: JLCloudy2 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:28Z 30 26 29 232 (SW) 305 - Cloudy 22:59Z 30 26 21 227 (SW) 407 - Cloudy 23:31Z 30 26 16 246 (WSW) 459 - Cloudy 00:20Z 31 26 17 248 (WSW) 1104 - Cloudy 00:52Z 30 26 20 263 (W) 2099 - Mostly Cloudy 01:25Z 29 26 20 222 (SW) 3057 - Mostly Cloudy 01:57Z 28 25 21 239 (WSW) 3546 - Cloudy 02:29Z 29 25 17 244 (WSW) 3392 - Cloudy 03:01Z 29 26 22 240 (WSW) 2893 - Cloudy 03:32Z 29 26 22 224 (SW) 2686 - Cloudy 04:06Z 29 26 20 243 (WSW) 1857 - Cloudy 04:38Z 29 26 19 239 (WSW) 1368 - Cloudy 05:10Z 28 26 21 217 (SW) 1579 - Cloudy 05:42Z 28 25 15 230 (SW) 1292 - Cloudy 06:15Z 28 26 22 216 (SW) 1117 - Cloudy 06:47Z 28 26 13 256 (WSW) 752 - Mostly Cloudy 07:19Z 28 26 18 218 (SW) 1026 - Cloudy 07:51Z 27 26 21 204 (SSW) 830 - Mostly Cloudy 08:23Z 27 26 17 198 (SSW) 798 - Partly Cloudy 08:55Z 27 27 19 204 (SSW) 516 - Fog 09:28Z 27 27 21 207 (SSW) 2407 - Fog 10:00Z 27 26 13 209 (SSW) 230 - Mostly Cloudy 10:32Z 27 26 24 206 (SSW) 876 - Fog 11:04Z 27 26 22 222 (SW) 210 - Mostly Cloudy 11:38Z 26 25 11 231 (SW) 304 - Cloudy ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Enclosure never opened Stowed at 30 deg alt, cartridge 3 installed.
