APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday April 20, 2003 (MJD 52750) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: Jurek Krzesinski, Atusko Nitta Eric and Connie by phone. ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science the first half and shake down the second half. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- o The cartridge bay door refused to stay closed. We managed to keep it closed by hitting the stop button when the door hits the ground. PR filed under cartridge hardware since I did not know where exactly to file this PR under. o -We checked procedure pages and verified all changes listed in the Changelog last night. o -PR 4971 closed (works with new iop v3_116_0) o -PR 4999 closed o -PR 3618 tested - needs more work (see the log for details) o -PR 4425 tested - needs more work o -PR 2575 tests weren't finished. See also PT nightlog for some problems related probably to PR 3778. Untested Shake items. PR1206 PR4634 Jim's red leak test --- it was not-photometric during shake. We did not take pointing model since we found guide stars without needing to go to fk5 during the first half of the night (two plates). We believe our pointing is still reasonably good. The night time temperature was -1 to 2C last night and around 0-2C tonight. We will probably need a new pointing model when the night time temperature is much warmer. No test software has been declaired current. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift ----------- - Pre-flight checks completed. - Spectro collimation not checked (imager mounted). - The HgCd lamp above counterweight 2 was slow to come on, taking ~20 seconds longer than the other HgCd lamps. Night ----- We started with imager. Stripe 14 N, available at the very beginning of the night. Seeing were unacceptable according to Son-of-Kent and 3.5m reported 2.5"seeing. Switching to spectroscopy. 03:12Z cart 2 plt 998 mounted. Problems with the guider: First when the guider flat was taken, SOP complained about "region out of bounds". Then when we tried to take a normal guider frame, we got: 0 0 F Modu="prt_Read"; Text="read timed out on port LTA11:" 10 10 F Text="doread failed" 11 10 I Text="command executing" 0 0 I GCamCmd="doread 15.00 2 2 192.0 128.0 0.0 0.0" We rebooted the mac. And that solved the problem. Stars on slew. SoS repoorted that WSIGMA for r1 waas out of spec. We stopped our oon-going science exposure to run goSpecFocus and collimate. T=1.6C. Collimate reported r1, r2 and b2 out-of-focus. Before collimate: sp1 Coll_motor_A 3203 Coll_motor_B 3222 Coll_motor_C 3205 sp2 Coll_motor_A 10412 Coll_motor_B 10418 Coll_motor_C 10411 After collimate: sp1 (mechPiston -6821) Coll_motor_A -3618 Coll_motor_B -3601 Coll_motor_C -3616 sp2 (mechPiston -3647) Coll_motor_A 6764 Coll_motor_B 6771 Coll_motor_C 6763 Bck to science. We did gotoField, but the guiderFlat complained that the region was out of bound. But there was no problem displaying all fiber and the stars when it is just taking normal guider frames. The first preCalib (issued at 04:21Z) after collimate failed quietly. The SOP screen showed the following but no flat images was taken. The second one succeeded including the guiderFlat. mcpPut: SYSTEM.STATUS mcpPut: SYSTEM.STATUS Closing Flat Field Screen 4 FF lamps are on Saved 30 seconds Image Size is 384 by 256 (should be 768 x 512) Background: 139.000000 180.926737 41.926737 We finished this plate inn three exposures. Cartridge 6 Plate 1281 mounted. Clouds rolled in before we finished our last plate, and although we were able to acquire the field, the guide stars disappeared behind the clouds before we were able to focus. We switched to test iop version (v3__116_0) at 06:40Z to start shaking. Since there is still a lot of stuff to be tested, we gave up with pointing model (we didn't have any problem tonight with finding stars, so it looks like we might run one more month on the old one). Just to let you know we were centering stars in fibers every time we were setting a new focus. PR 4425 JEG's new guiding centroid procedure --------------------------------------------- taking dark: sp1> multiGuiderDark 10 20 30 40 08:22Z finished with darks, all files are where they suppose tobe. sp1> gGuide on sp1> loadGuiderDark 10 We started guiding but it failed, we called Eric and he degbuged it on fly. We moved then stars off the center (2 stars left in the field of view), and started to guide again - no effect, stars weren't moved to the centers. But since it is cloudy it might be, that the code does not see the stars (well, it did show us seeing value at least on one fiber), we increased integration time and the stars were moved to the fiber centers. Now another plate: 09:25Z cart 4 plt 1166. Again, after go to field we got problem: gotoField -gFlatt got the following message: sp1: list element in quotes followed by ":" instead of space sp2: list element in quotes followed by ":" instead of space invoked from within "camHandler" invoked from within "if {([exposureRemaining -quiet] == 0 && [statusGet daqBusy] ==0)} { # echo "Idle camHandler" camHandler return }" (procedure "camHandler_maybe" line 12) and again we had to call Eric (he suggested that we exit the sop and restart it all the way up - so we did). Eric's recomendation is to source the path to his code and do gGuide on, before anything else. Then gotoField worked and the gGuide was guiding. Next test: exit SOP, and start it up again without moving the telescope, sourced Eric's code, and did a normal observing setup. But loadGGuiderData $exptime produced errors: sp1> loadGGuiderData 20 Error: bad switch "1050917924 1050915485 1050915571": must be -ascii, -integer, -real, -increasing -decreasing, or -command sp1> tb bad switch "1050917924 1050915485 1050915571": must be -ascii, -integer, -real, -increasing -decreasing, or -command while executing "lsort [keylkeys fileList] -decreasing -integer" invoked from within "lindex [lsort [keylkeys fileList] -decreasing -integer]..." invoked from within "set lastTime [lindex [lsort [keylkeys fileList] -decreasing -integer]..." (procedure "loadGGuiderData" line 14) invoked from within "loadGGuiderData 20" sp1> Eric was called. So, we started to guide and waited for core to be dumped. Servers didn't come up (they blinked only for a while and disapeared), watcher has been complaining. So, we restarted them manualy and they stayed alive. It's too late to do the full test of that PR, (11:17Z), so we stopped at this point and reversed the link to the old startServers.2002-07-10.sh script.
