APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday April 23, 2003 (MJD 52753) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Long Mike Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- After being closed due to dust and high winds for the first half of the night, we finished 4 plates ( 1281, 1169, 1294, 1171 ) under clear skies and mediocre seeing. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Dusty windy conditions all afternoon persisted through the first half of the night. When things settled down enough to open it was clear and remained so the rest of the night. The following message popped up in the watcher when we opened. altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: DOWN (2003-04-24 06:08:48Z sdssmcp) Odd behavior from the outside manipulator: When first attempting to lift a cartridge out of the bay tonight, it would raise up to the yellow band on the led display ( about an inch from full up ) and stop. It would not beep, but it wouldn't go up any further. When attempting to go down, it would beep and still not move. If I let go of the handle and waited 10 seconds or so, then tried to move down, it would go down, but not up. This was observed multiple times and on different cartridges. To make it even more odd, if I tried to lift the arm when it wasn't near the lift point for the cartridge, it would go all the way to the top. It wasn't catching on anything. It wouldn't lift other cartridges in the bay. The cartridge lift was in the proper position. Power cycling the manipulator cleared the errant behavior. 06:36Z Cartridge 6 1281 13.5 11.1 15.3 11.6 8.5 9.6 8.0 8.7 52751 -------------------- 22.0 20.7 23.3 20.3 No guide stars on slew, needed FK5 06:59Z start first science Done in one additional exposure, with 11's no less! 07:31Z instChange Cartridge 4 1169 17.6 15.7 18.0 17.3 07:34Z gotoField guide stars on slew ( once we saw the frame ) sp1> showGuiderFrame Error: Star 6 won't fit in an 471*471 region, scaled 150 Had to go with -simple monitor in order to see guider frames. 07:51Z Start of first science Got 5's in 720s exposure Done in three 08:51Z instChange Cartridge 9 1294 19.0 19.4 17.5 19.6 08:55Z gotoField Guide stars on slew Seeing poor at the start ( up to 3" ).
