APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday July 6, 2003 (MJD 52827) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: Howard Brewington, Pete Newman Support: Craig Loomis ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Seance. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Weather kept us closed. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checks: ----------------- On ending the imager doghouse bias, several errors were noted. See problem section #1 for details and the fix. We also found the LN2 pressurisation N2 bottle empty again and changed it (see telescope status section). Spectrographs' foci were adjusted - see end of log for details. Night: ------ Rain, lightning, wind and clouds kept us closed all night. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4039 23:06Z 23:19Z 100 O -19.63 -16.46 33 ignore 4040 23:22Z 23:27Z 100 O -15.60 -14.58 20 ignore 4041 23:31Z 23:34Z 100 O -13.51 -12.60 19 ignore 4042 23:37Z 23:54Z 100 O -12.01 -7.70 38 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): Yes. File permission error --------------------------------- On ending the imager doghouse bias during afternoon checks, the foollowing error message was received: im> endDrift 2003-07-06 23:17:28Z: Error stopping focus loop: couldn't open "/astrolog/52827/focus-52827.par": Permission denied 2003-07-06 23:17:39Z: stopping drift with: iccExec id1 id2 id3 id4 id5 id6 ad1 ad2 ad3 ad4 readoutEnd 2003-07-06 23:18:14Z: closed shutters 2003-07-06 23:18:14Z: endData completed Flavor of this run (science, bias, calibration, engineering, ignore, help) [bias]: I logged in as observer@sdsshost and confirmed the umask was 2. I issued a chmod g+w command against the focus.par file to fix the permissions, and ran another short doghouse bias. This produced a new error from makeRunLog: im> pgxwin_server: Another server is already active. filling out runlog /astrolog/52827/runlog-4040.txt for run 4040. makeRunLog failed for run 4040. I have the following diagnostics plus check the murmur log and your screen history: can't read "noise": no such variable Yet another doghouse bias was run, which produced yet another error! makeRunLog failed for run 4041. I have the following diagnostics plus check the murmur log and your screen history: You haven't asked for any frames (10..9) im> which may be due to that run being very short. Yet another other (logner) run was made, and all was at last well. Why is the permissions error happening? Well, when the servers are started from monx3, the sdsshost session is started to that umask=22 instead of 2. This seems to be because the .login file is not exectued, suggesting the "-ls" parameter is needed on the xterm launch. Craig fixed the FVWM control file to include the -ls option, so that shouldn't happen again. ---=== SPECTRO FOCUS CHECKS ===--- Spectrograph focus was checked at Tamb=21C and adjusted. Initial positions: sp1: Coll_motor_A 242 Coll_motor_B 442 Coll_motor_C -658 sp2: Coll_motor_A 507 Coll_motor_B 491 Coll_motor_C 492 On tyhe first pass, collimate found sp1 in focus but sp2 out of focus.
