APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday October 15, 2003 (MJD 52928) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- (Swing) Jurek Krzesinski, Atsuko Nitta (Night) Steph Snedden, Mike Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Shakedown completed except for exercising the spectrographs, DIMM testing and declaring software current (all of which will be done tomorrow). And for Cub fans, the drought continues. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Details of the day time shake have been mailed separately but here is a quick rundown: Spectro monthly checkout done. Spectrographs checked, bias, arc, flat in spec. Imager tested bias/flat checks done. Optics - homed (migs are good - included in the mirrors section). MCP runs now on new alt.dat and az.dat fiducial tables (mcp_fiducials v1_9). MCP was rebooted. Afternoon checkout: ------------------- imager and DAs - ok, bias in the doghouse taken, telescope fiducialized and ready. spectrographs in spec, in focus. servers are running under iop v3_120_0 Night: ------ The azimuth fiducial data taken 2 days ago appeared to have a problem with abnormally large errors. When Steph redid the az sweeps tonight she found a 2000 count jump after the fiducial at 47 degrees was crossed and this discontinuity persisted throughout the remainder of that sweep. She reset the fiducial and kept an eye on it and the jump did not return for the rest of the data. She strongly suspects that something similar happened in the data obtained by Wendell. The new az table was implemented (mcp_fiducials v1_9) and the mcp was rebooted. Perhaps the az fiducial at 47 degrees needs cleaning? The changeLog for sdssProcedures 74, 75 and 76 was examined and all changes were verified. The latest version of the apache wheel test document was examined and comments were returned to Scot. After installing the new az fiducial table, a pointing model was obtained using GRID_10_10_28_88_T_90.DAT;1 Here are the results: Pointing model results: 1 IE -10.290 -240.26 0.672 2 IA +6.516 -258.44 0.747 3 AN +1.845 -0.24 0.234 4 AW -1.298 -1.70 0.233 5 HWCA2 -0.622 -0.29 0.304 6 HWSA2 -0.253 -0.27 0.309 7 HNCA1 +0.859 +0.75 0.351 8 HNSA1 +0.470 +0.26 0.351 9 CA -2.996 +26.86 0.544 10 PZZ1 -1.526 -142.58 2.437 11 ACEC -0.510 +1.11 0.442 12 ACES +2.483 -0.10 0.443 13 TX -1.015 -1.38 1.239 Sky RMS = 1.53 Popn SD = 1.64 A check of the model with a smaller set of pointing data (GRID_8_4_30_70_F_30.DAT;1) gives: Read 31 data points * fix * fit coeff change value sigma 1 IE -240.26 2 IA -258.44 3 AN -0.24 4 AW -1.70 5 HWCA2 -0.29 6 HWSA2 -0.27 7 HNCA1 +0.75 8 HNSA1 +0.26 9 CA +26.86 10 PZZ1 -142.58 11 ACEC +1.11 12 ACES -0.10 13 TX -1.38 Sky RMS = 1.98 Popn SD = 1.98 After finishing the pointing model, the imager was mounted. We checked to see if the piezos were connected and they were. There was an unconnected cable that appeared to be coming from axial A, however. Since we couldn't find where to plug it in, we left it unconnected and just taped it down. There was a slip on alt 2 when bringing the telescope up from the piezo check (around 0840Z). An inspection of the drive surface showed moth gravy. Yummy! Both of the alt drive surfaces had been cleaned after we pulled the building this evening. We got on the sky and tried the segue iop. The segue iop successfully took a bias (PR 5657 closed) and the NODE and INCL keywords were correct in the gang headers, the photo headers and the idReport file (PR 5596 closed). However, there were some weird characters in the idReport file. Could someone please have a look at this file and see if it looks normal? Donuts were obtained on both sides of focus and the collimation was checked. Other than the usual slight astigmatism, everything looked fine. Frames were saved to /data/photo/optics/52928 and are as follows: frame 14, focus 0; frame 24, focus -800; frame 39, focus -241 (in focus) The test versions of iop and segue iop both seemed robust and we noticed no problems with either. If there are no problems with them tomorrow night, we will declare them both current.
