APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday November 28, 2003 (MJD 52972) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta (swing) Howard Brewington Scot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Sorry - the first nightLog was unedited... Tonight's menu: --------------- Turkey Soup Turkey Sandwiches Potatoes with turkey Turkey and stuffing Cranberries and turkey Turkey pie Turkey bleu Turkey turkey turkey and beans Beans turkey potatoes turkey and turkey Turkey potatoes turkey beans turkey turkey and turkey Turkey beans turkey turkey turkey potatoes beans and turkey .... We have a serious grade2 N2 problem. We replaced two bottles in the past three days and lost 500lbs in one since the end of last night by the start of this night. It lost about 400lbs during tonight's efforts. We're seeing way too many "too large to correct" errors in az these past two nights that are real. Could someone please take a look at things? We're guessing we have an accumulated S/N of 30 or so on plate 1664 in this plugging. Could someone please take a look and let us know how far off we are? We finished 4 plates. Data on two others. Thick clouds first part of the night changing to thin passing clouds rest of night. EndNight rejoiced with us at a successful completion. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ----------- sp2 needed coll. motor adjustment initNight -tapeLoad failed with the message in the PROBLEM section. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Just like it failed few days ago, all tape drives did not successful load tapes, not only id4-2. I suppose this is a feature of initNight. The cleaning light on id4-2 came on so I cleaned it and placed a new tape in the drive. My next "initNight -tapeRelabel" worked. id4 drives (both of them) got many error messages in watcher following the goDrift -bias. I followed the "re-enabling two failed drives" instructions. This recovered id4-2, but immediately after archResume, id4-1 complained and unloaded the tape. So I cleaned this drive, loaded with new tape. I followed the "enabling one failed drives" proc which recovered id4-1. Night ---- When opening, Howard did an axis init and a track 121,5, but the telescope aborted in altitude, so he did another axis init and track, but then the the rotator took off and stopped, and then the az took off, so Howard hit a stop button. I then did an axis init and another track121,30 and the telescope moved properly although the rotator moved back to zero without me asking it to do so. Howard had a problem with his attempt to take his initial SOP bias. He exited and restarted SOP and all was well. See problems. Conditions at start of night - moon and thin clouds. We started with cart 3 plate 1663 (segue test). Again we needed large offsets to find the fk5 star (AzOff: -0.014624; AltOff: 0.000756). Clouds rendered all but one exposure here useless. We sat it out and when it cleared, went on to: 05:19Z: Cart 7 plate 1664 (seguetest). No GSOTGTF, but this was expected due to the large offsets from 1663. We cleared them and found an fk5 easily. We did three exposures for 70m (some clouds) and postCalibs here and went on to: Cart 4 plate 1254 (taurus63). No GSOTGTF An fk5 star was easily found, though. The dim guide stars made setting up a little more time-consuming than normal. We started the first science exposure at: 07:32Z. SoS reported nothing for spectrograph 1 for this plate. We (think we) finished this plate in 3 exposures and went on to: 08:36Z Cart 1 plate 1589 (main survey!). We had another too large to correct az fiducial on the gotoField. We forced a correction and no GSOTGTF, but an fk5 was easily found. The sky has been fairly clear for the past 20m or so, but the sat maps show stuff all around us and we are fairly certain that wisps will come by from time to time, so we decided to stick with spectroscopy. We finished this plate in three exposures and went on to: Cart 8 plate 1213 (main survey). No GSOTGTF; fk5star was found easily.09:57Z - we started the first exposure of this plate. We finished this plate in three exposures. 10:52Z: On to cart 5 plate 1299. No GSOTGTF, but an fk5 star was found after clearing offsets. We finished this plate in three exposures, but took two more since we had no more plates to do before twilight. 12:27Z: During the instChange slew at the end of the night, Howard's SOP timed out waiting for the TCC to finish, although the slew finished fine. It recovered fine, but we cant' explain why it timed out in the first place. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4291 22:42Z 23:26Z 100 O 117.08 128.09 87 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 23535, plate -9999 ------- 22:21 23535 0.0 bias ----- sequence 23536, plate 1663 ------- 22:43 23536 10.0 flat 22:45 23537 2.0 arc 22:59 23538 2.1 arc 23:01 23539 2.1 arc 23:21 23540 2.1 arc 23:23 23541 2.1 arc 23:33 23542 0.0 bias 23:41 23543 0.0 bias TESTING ----- sequence 23543, plate 1663 ------- 01:22 23544 10.0 flat 01:25 23545 2.0 arc 01:55 23546 1500.1 target 02:23 23547 1500.1 target BAD 02:51 23548 1089.8 target BAD ----- sequence 23549, plate 1664 ------- 05:32 23549 10.0 flat 05:34 23550 2.0 arc 06:11 23551 1800.1 target 06:34 23552 1200.1 target 06:57 23553 1200.1 target 07:00 23554 10.0 flat 07:02 23555 2.0 arc ----- sequence 23556, plate 1254 ------- 07:28 23556 10.0 flat 07:30 23557 2.0 arc 07:49 23558 900.1 target 08:08 23559 900.1 target 08:26 23560 900.1 target DONE ----- sequence 23561, plate 1589 ------- 08:47 23561 10.0 flat 08:49 23562 2.0 arc 09:05 23563 720.1 target 09:20 23564 720.1 target 09:35 23565 720.1 target DONE ----- sequence 23566, plate 1213 ------- 09:51 23566 10.0 flat 09:54 23567 2.0 arc 10:10 23568 720.1 target 10:28 23569 900.1 target 10:44 23570 750.1 target DONE ----- sequence 23571, plate 1299 ------- 10:58 23571 10.0 flat 11:01 23572 2.0 arc 11:18 23573 750.1 target 11:33 23574 750.1 target 11:49 23575 750.1 target 12:04 23576 750.1 target 12:21 23577 750.1 target DONE ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:35Z 3 1663 169.62 -0.0162 69.53 0.0030 -14.53 -0.0090 1.000180 05:42Z 7 1664 -10.16 0.0016 56.80 0.0023 171.41 -0.0105 1.000240 09:08Z 1 1589 92.47 -0.0029 60.88 -0.0011 254.53 -0.0139 1.000210 09:58Z 8 1213 109.02 -0.0087 66.68 0.0005 -87.32 -0.0074 1.000310 11:23Z 5 1299 2.26 0.0034 64.95 0.0013 181.85 -0.0039 1.000140 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:34Z 3 1663 1.00018 -1778 -289 50 169 69.5 4.4 1 344 gdr 1.9 05:42Z 7 1664 1.00024 -2369 -801 0 -10 56.8 4.9 5 264 gdr 1.3 09:08Z 1 1589 1.00021 -2073 -567 0 92 60.9 3.9 6 293 gdr 1.5 09:58Z 8 1213 1.00031 -3060 -1396 0 109 66.7 4.1 7 349 gdr 1.4 11:23Z 5 1299 1.00014 -1383 -4 0 2 64.9 5.6 6 282 gdr 1.8 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:14Z 38 2 0 3 (N) 213 - 22:46Z 38 -4 5 359 (NNW) 171 - 23:17Z 38 -1 0 54 (NE) 316 - 23:47Z 38 -5 4 6 (N) 253 - 00:13Z 38 -11 5 358 (NNW) 211 - 00:43Z 37 -3 2 1 (N) 394 - 01:14Z 38 -11 5 354 (NNW) 153 - 01:46Z 39 -11 0 307 (NW) 161 - 02:16Z 42 -7 0 169 (S) 146 - 02:47Z 42 -5 1 187 (S) 116 - 03:17Z 42 -4 2 237 (WSW) 111 - 03:47Z 40 -7 0 232 (SW) 145 - 04:18Z 40 -7 2 254 (WSW) 86 - 04:50Z 40 -7 1 253 (WSW) 133 - 05:20Z 41 -7 3 297 (WNW) 70 - 05:50Z 40 -6 2 260 (W) 76 - 06:21Z 40 -7 4 326 (NW) 57 - 06:51Z 40 -8 4 274 (W) 48 - 07:23Z 38 -8 2 260 (W) 58 - 07:55Z 38 -9 1 251 (WSW) 52 - 08:27Z 38 -10 5 267 (W) 60 - 08:58Z 38 -9 3 305 (NW) 59 - 09:28Z 39 -8 6 353 (NNW) 44 - 09:58Z 39 -8 6 358 (NNW) 24 - 10:29Z 40 -7 4 341 (NNW) 35 - 11:00Z 42 -6 6 273 (W) 84 - 11:31Z 42 -6 6 273 (W) 60 - 12:02Z 41 -6 6 287 (WNW) 55 - 12:32Z 41 -7 7 281 (W) 40 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- opened (fans already on): ~00:30 closed: ~12:45Z cart 3 mounted no interlocks bypasses ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_121_0 Watcher: v2_24_0 MCP: v5_23_0 TPM: tpm_v2_36_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.1 July 22 2003 sdssProcedures: v1_79 SoS: v4_10_6 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.5500 0.5450 Axial B 0.6380 0.6370 Axial C 1.0840 1.0850 Trans D -8.4650 -8.4550 Lateral E 10.8204 10.7442 Lateral F 10.8204 10.7823 GALILS Commanded: 4600. -2850. 850. -9250. 18400. 17850.
