APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday December 19, 2003 (MJD 52993) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington (swing) Steph Snedden Atsuko Nitta ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Some clouds came and left. Good seeing and great spectro night. o Finished 5 plates o one pointing done (offset4) for Tremonti plate (one more pointing to go) o 1/2 way done for cart 4 plate 1632 (photoz) o one very good S/N on plate 1358. We saw cartridge 7 plate 1358 had centering problem with my guide stars and required remounting before all was well. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon Checkout: -------------------- Spectro focus was checked but not adjusted; it was within spec. Night: -------------------- With few clouds on NE, we start with spectro. Cart 2 Plate ------------------ We would have had guide stars on slew if we were patient enough to wait until the sky was dark enough to see, but we went to fk5 first to get the started with the setup. Done in 3x900s exposures. SoS wanted postCalib for the last exposure, but it did not get one since we have already changed inst before the message came up. The SoS had Max sky-residual warning, but did not see have to have too bad an effect on SoS. The first science exposure was started in twilight which accounts for the first warning about the scattered light. I list the SoS messages below. The manipulator shook while trying to get cart3 on the cart. The shaking always takes place when going down to place the cartridge on the Lindy cart. Warning from SoS on this plate: sdR-r1-00024018.fit: WARNING: Scattered light max = 63 electrons (Warm CCD or twi?) sdR-r2-00024018.fit: WARNING: Whopping fiber # 585 (may have adverse affect on S/N) sdR-r2-00024018.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 108.708 at 8916.85 Ang (ignoring 5577) sdR-r2-00024019.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 74.6923 at 8920.95 Ang (ignoring 5577) sdR-r1-00024020.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 91.7796 at 8954.67 Ang (ignoring 5577) sdR-b2-00024020.fit: WARNING: Large flexure flat<->science (Post-calibs recommended!) sdR-r2-00024020.fit: WARNING: Large flexure flat<->science (Post-calibs recommended!) sdR-r2-00024020.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 61.4907 at 8916.98 Ang (ignoring 5577) Cart 3 Plate 1133 Connie Plate ---------------------------------- fk5ed for this plate. We finished this plate in 4x900s exposures. Clouds moved in while observing this plate. Here are the SoS messages for this plate. Again it was able to compute S/N without any problem that we can see. sdR-r1-00024021.fit: WARNING: Scattered light max = 69 electrons (Warm CCD or twi?) sdR-r1-00024021.fit: WARNING: Bad sky residuals at 5807 to 5866 Ang; Peak chi= 4.21 sdR-r1-00024022.fit: WARNING: Scattered light max = 70 electrons (Warm CCD or twi?) sdR-r1-00024022.fit: WARNING: Bad sky residuals at 5805 to 5865 Ang; Peak chi= 4.50 sdR-r1-00024025.fit: WARNING: Scattered light max = 69 electrons (Warm CCD or twi?) sdR-r1-00024025.fit: WARNING: Bad sky residuals at 5805 to 5873 Ang; Peak chi= 4.47 sdR-r1-00024026.fit: WARNING: Scattered light max = 67 electrons (Warm CCD or twi?) sdR-r1-00024026.fit: WARNING: Bad sky residuals at 5805 to 5869 Ang; Peak chi= 4.42 Cart 9 Plate 1180 Tremonti Plate ------------------------------------ Sky became photometric again. Guide stars on gotoField. After centering etc., we go to offset4 -1.5, -2.6 Between each exposure we go back to central position to check the rotator/scale. 4x1200s exposure done. We are done with this pointing. One more pointing to go. No SoS warning for these 4 exposures. The only warnings are for the exposures taken are for the spectro collimation during the afternoon checkouts. The first science exposuremight not have less S/N the others since we might have sometimes over corrected guiding to be at this offset position. Few clouds went by while observing. Cart 4 Plate 1632 Photoz plate -------------------------------- Fk5 star found at the edge of the fiber. 06:45Z DIMM software started. We forgot to start Dimm software (we did open the DIMM dome when we opened the 2.5m. 2x900S exposures done. We do not have enough time to do one more before the plate expires. No SoS warnings. We got a GRB phone call. Steph added the GRB in the manual target list for PT. Cart 6 Plate 1273 Science! ---------------------------- Stars on gotoField. Finally some science plate! Steph is making me work hard today. After finding out that the DIMM seeing measurement was not getting updated, Steph restarted Armin's software. That fixed it. 2x900s and 1x600s exposures finished this plate. No SoS warnings. Cart 8 Plate 1426 Science ------------------------------ Stars on gotoField. 3x900s exposures finished this plate. No SoS warning other than needing a postCalib for the last r2 exposure which did not come early enough. Cart 1 Plate 1304 Science --------------------------- FK5 required. This is the 7th plate of the night. I am getting a work out tonight. Since we had 1.5hrs before twilight after the third exposure, we took another bonus exposure followed by the postCalib. We only have one more plate we can observe tonight. SoS gave the following warning for one of the b1 exposure: sdR-b1-00024052.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 325.380 at 5681.01 Ang (ignoring 5577) 10:31Z Moonrise Cart 7 Plate 1358 Science ---------------------------- Steph did her magical guess work finding the fk5 star. This plate seems to be unusually off. The sky is photometric again while we setup the cartridge. The guider had a hard time centering. Another gflat but that did not improrve the matter. So we remounted the cartridge and reslewed back and all was well. Since I latch both the primary and the slitheads when I mount each cartridges and ensure we get all green lights in the control panel, We have seen similar problem before that remounting the cartridge solved the problem in the past. Unfortunately, this problem did not allow us to finish this plate. We only got one exposure. The S/N is 9-10! There was no SoS warnings. endNight finished successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4331 22:14Z 22:31Z 100 O 130.97 135.06 40 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 24009, plate -9999 ------- 23:03 24009 0.0 bias ----- sequence 24010, plate 1180 ------- 23:10 24010 10.0 flat 23:13 24011 2.0 arc 23:18 24012 2.1 arc 23:20 24013 2.1 arc ----- sequence 24014, plate 1486 ------- 22.4 15.7 29.6 16.5 23:31 24014 0.0 bias 01:08 24016 10.0 flat 01:10 24017 2.0 arc 01:31 24018 900.1 target 01:49 24019 900.1 target 02:07 24020 900.1 target ----- sequence 24021, plate 1133 ------- 26.0 16.2 26.9 15.0 02:43 24021 900.1 target 03:01 24022 900.1 target 03:05 24023 10.0 flat 03:08 24024 2.0 arc 03:29 24025 900.1 target 03:47 24026 900.1 target ----- sequence 24027, plate 1180 ------- ? ? ? ? 04:12 24027 10.0 flat 04:14 24028 2.0 arc 04:42 24029 1200.1 target 05:11 24030 1200.1 target 05:41 24031 1200.1 target 06:09 24032 1200.1 target 06:13 24033 10.0 flat 06:15 24034 2.0 arc ----- sequence 24035, plate 1632 ------- 14.7 12.7 17.5 14.4 06:32 24035 10.0 flat 06:35 24036 2.0 arc 06:56 24037 900.1 target 07:14 24038 900.1 target ----- sequence 24039, plate 1273 ------- 20.0 19.4 24.4 19.5 07:36 24039 10.0 flat 07:39 24040 2.0 arc 08:00 24041 900.1 target 08:20 24042 900.1 target 08:33 24043 600.1 target ----- sequence 24044, plate 1426 ------- 16.5 16.0 18.8 14.7 08:49 24044 10.0 flat 08:52 24045 2.0 arc 09:12 24046 900.1 target 09:30 24047 900.1 target 09:48 24048 900.1 target ----- sequence 24049, plate 1304 ------- 27.4 22.2 33.4 27.2 10:04 24049 10.0 flat 52990 3.0 2.7 3.5 3.5 10:06 24050 2.0 arc --------------------- 10:26 24051 900.1 target 30.4 24.9 36.9 30.7 rocking! 10:44 24052 900.1 target 11:02 24053 900.1 target 11:20 24054 900.1 target 11:24 24055 10.0 flat 11:26 24056 2.0 arc ----- sequence 24057, plate 1358 ------- 9.4 10.1 10.6 9.1 12:21 24057 10.0 flat 12:23 24058 2.0 arc 12:47 24059 1200.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:14Z 2 1486 -14.20 0.0055 56.36 0.0034 168.02 0.0064 1.000060 02:27Z 3 1133 -18.51 0.0078 55.81 0.0013 164.45 0.0020 0.999970 06:53Z 4 1632 -47.41 0.0052 46.46 0.0030 141.68 -0.0153 1.000210 07:58Z 6 1273 103.37 0.0042 59.90 0.0012 -97.24 -0.0115 1.000090 08:56Z 8 1426 109.36 0.0042 60.76 0.0012 -91.57 -0.0115 1.000270 10:10Z 1 1304 21.10 0.0097 65.21 0.0019 197.80 0.0032 1.000230 12:28Z 7 1358 223.51 0.0081 74.30 0.0053 52.64 -0.0062 1.000230 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7105 Stays: JL7106 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:14Z 2 1486 1.00006 -593 896 225 -14 56.4 6.1 8 272 gdr 1.4 02:26Z 3 1133 0.99997 296 1508 100 -18 55.8 5.8 5 270 gdr 1.0 06:53Z 4 1632 1.00021 -2073 -524 0 -47 46.5 5.8 3 263 gdr 1.2 07:58Z 6 1273 1.00009 -889 467 50 103 59.9 5.0 6 267 gdr 1.4 08:55Z 8 1426 1.00027 -2665 -1006 50 109 60.8 5.7 11 282 gdr 1.5 10:10Z 1 1304 1.00023 -2270 -689 50 21 65.2 5.2 8 315 gdr 1.8 12:28Z 7 1358 1.00023 -2270 -755 0 224 74.3 6.2 5 10 gdr 1.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:17Z 50 2 8 228 (SW) 43 - 22:49Z 47 1 5 252 (WSW) 105 - 23:22Z 47 0 4 250 (WSW) 108 - 23:54Z 45 -2 5 263 (W) 25 - 00:41Z 42 -4 5 268 (W) 12 - 01:13Z 42 -4 5 276 (W) 3 - 01:44Z 42 -4 5 267 (W) 8 - 02:14Z 42 -5 5 267 (W) 3 - 02:44Z 42 -5 7 266 (W) 13 - 03:16Z 42 -5 5 259 (W) 13 - 03:46Z 42 -5 6 266 (W) 10 - 04:16Z 42 -5 7 264 (W) 10 - 04:47Z 42 -6 2 256 (WSW) 23 - 05:19Z 41 -6 3 260 (W) 11 - 05:50Z 42 -5 5 265 (W) 10 - 06:20Z 43 -3 7 269 (W) 432 - 06:52Z 42 -4 5 265 (W) 250 - 07:22Z 41 -5 6 269 (W) 66 - 07:52Z 42 -5 8 270 (W) 98 - 08:24Z 40 -7 2 264 (W) 101 - 08:55Z 42 -5 3 275 (W) 158 - 09:25Z 42 -5 8 298 (WNW) 92 - 09:57Z 41 -6 14 310 (NW) 160 - 10:27Z 41 -5 11 321 (NW) 426 - 10:57Z 41 -5 9 355 (NNW) 551 - 11:28Z 40 -6 11 336 (NNW) 337 - 12:00Z 39 -5 9 338 (NNW) 368 - 12:32Z 43 -1 9 0 (N) 231 - 13:02Z 44 -1 7 349 (NNW) 124 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:00Z Open 13:00Z Closed Telescope at stow with cartridge 7 on.
