APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday January 22, 2004 (MJD 53027) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Long Pete Newman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We got data on two plates tonight (1561, 1641), though not enough to declare either done. Humidity forced us to close at 05:00Z. Clouds and/or humidity kept us closed the rest of the night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- murmur server did not come up after the host reboot. The only thing in the murmur window was the following (all other messages were cluttering up the other server windows). /p/astroda/v14_47/bin/dscMurPipe: Got unexpected retval=0 on hdr read. Expected 6 bytes cleanupMurmur successfully restarted the murmur server. Both spectrographs focus adjusted by 3600. Night: ------- 23:40Z Doors Open, Fans On. 00:20Z Enclosure Open. 00:23:43Z Windscreen touched in altitude up Cartridge 1 1561 lowz74 15.5 9.5 17.3 14.3 00:40Z gotoField FK5 in bright twilight and clouds found with minor searching. 01:21Z preCalib 01:45Z first science Efficiency running between 50% and 60% on first exposure. Took postCalibs after second exposure as it was asking for them from the first exposure. Plate passed observability after 4 exposures. Not done. 03:31Z instChange Cartridge 5 1641 orion81 2.5 2.4 2.6 2.1 7.0 9.2 7.0 6.5 53024 ------------------- 03:35Z gotoField 9.5 11.6 9.6 8.6 needed FK5 Seeing is excellent now, between 1.0 and 1.2 arcseconds. 03:51Z preCalib 03:38Z first science (on target). 04:15Z Dew point depression has slowly shrunk. Now at 4.0 C Second exposure (on sky). We used .00277 degrees of boresight offset to get a real 10 arcsecond offset on the sky. We added an arcsecond to the 9 suggested since that example used 15 minute exposures and we were taking 20 minutes. This fine tuning was superfluous in the end because the telescope drifted some 20 arcseconds during the unguided sky exposure. It seems the combination of errors in the pointing model and instrument block are too great for unguided exposures above about 75 or 80 degrees elevation. 05:00:09Z Windscreen touched in altitude UP. 05:00Z Closed due to humidity. Clouds thickening as well. 11:40Z While the humidity backed off an hour ago, the clouds remain. The satellite isn't showing much hope, so we are surrendering the last hour of the night. 11:50Z endNight rejoiced, being able to write actual science data to tape. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4375 22:31Z 22:45Z 100 O 168.67 172.13 37 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y b1-L: 1222 faint hot col 154 b1-R: 1038 leftmost fiber cut off at lower left. b2-L: 1242 b2-R: 1211 1313 dark col, starting at row 1229 r1-L: 1191 r1-R: 1237 faint hot col 1154 leftmost fiber cut off at lower left. r2-L: 562 r2-R: 1442 hot col 1475 rightmost fiber cut off at upper right.
