Two cartridges declared done additional signal on a third, imaging on 25 N in good seeing. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: ============ Spectrographic focus was adjusted. See end of log for details. The altitude locking pin is still in need of adjustment: it cannot be fully engaged even by tweaking the telescope position. However, we determined that we can operate as the latch control panel illuminates when the pin is partly engaged (i.e. is not disengaged and not engaged). It would be nice to know how to override this to illuminate the latch control panel if the locking pin fails completely. However, when we mounted the first cartridge of the night the pin engaged easily. We wonder if there is a problem with the switch that controls the LEDs at the control box? Perhaps it moved a bit? Night: ====== 01:26Z Clouds in the area and radar return delayed opening. 02:00Z We open for spectroscopy to partly cloudy skies. Cartridge 7, plate 1756. No guide stars until an FK5 was used. We noticed that the mirror collimation was not running when we tried to issue some scale changes. This cost us about 10 minutes of on-sky time before we re-enabled collimation and finished the scale changes. Clouds came through and delayed the start of science for a few more minutes .Highly variable cloud kept the overall efficiency low. Finished this plate with a total exposure of 3900 s. 05:26Z Cartridge 3, plate 1446. Needed a 10 asec E offset to find the guide stars. Finished this plate with a total exposure time of 2340 s. 06:57Z We switch to imaging. 07:20Z Sagittarius stripe. Run 4503 frame 44, we start the Sag scan after adjusting focus. Starting RA 198 deg, starting Dec 9 deg. PT only observing primaries. After going through the setup and drifting for a while, we realized we had completely misread the start & stop UTs, so we were outside the limits of the stripe. This scan may be useful for something, but not the Sagittarius stripe. 08:27Z ended at frame 155. Off to a North survey stripe. 08:34Z Run 4504, stripe 25 N, start lambda =-26 08:40Z lambda -23, start of 2 degree ramp. 08:47Z frame 32, lambda -21, start of science. Nu error was high, but still acceptable (16 asec) and decreased with time. We stayed on this strip until moonrise. 11:10Z Frame 271. lambda=14.4. Ended the drift. This would make frame 257, lambda 12.4 the end of science. 11:26Z Run 4505 - bias on telescope. 11:45Z Back to spectroscopy. Cartridge 4, plate 1353. Needed an FK5 and a 17 asec E offset. One exposure of 793 s completed.
