APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday April 12, 2004 (MJD 53108) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Howard Brewington Night: John Barentine Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Some imaging on strip 24 N accomplished despite a few problems. Note that there is a patch of 33 frames in run 4552 that were affected by a cloud passing through. See the main log for details. Two plates finished, but one *may* need to be put back in the database. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: I had to reboot photo 1 because a tape error problem. I checked the spectro focus, and it was found to be within spec. Steph cleaned the cloud camera and locked down a loose tripod leg after a rough centering of the CCD. Night: We mounted the imager but delayed opening because the dewpoint depression was hovering arround 3C. 03:09Z We open and go to strip 24N. The bias (run 4548) runs for some extra frames because there was a headlamp on near the telescope for the first 17 frames (approx.). ----- 03:23Z Run 4549 Strip 24 N, Start lambda -67.5 Skippy had trouble finding star matches. There was no obvious reason for bad pointing (offsets were cleared, there were no slips or too-large-to-correct crossings). skyGang was no help, as there were too many field stars and the -faint option didn't work for us. Eventually, we found the link to David's IDL skippy (we were looking for it in QA folklore...not imagingfolklore) and found that our pointing error was indeed huge: FILENAME MU ROT_ERROR NU_ERROR ------------------------- ----------- ----------- ------------ idGang-004549-c3-0096.fit 132.47 0.015981 -373.76 idGang-004549-c5-0096.fit 132.47 0.010814 -373.79 SKIPPY: NODE = 95.000000 [deg] SKIPPY: INCL = 35.000000 [deg] SKIPPY: XBORE = -22.7400 [mm] = 0.104879 [deg] SKIPPY: Median rotator offset = 0.0159805 [deg] SKIPPY: Median nu error = -373.756 [arcsec] The most likely explanation of the problem is that the boresight offset was commanded, but not applied. We don't remember if the boresight offset was shown in tccMon, unfortunately. 04:25Z Ended drift, frame 111, lambda -51. Unfortunately, this data will most likely not be useful. ----- 04:30Z Run 4550 Strip 24 N, start lambda -25.5 We went to the next part of the same strip. This time, the pointing was fine. The rotator error was on the edge, but since our seeing was in spec but not excellent, we made no adjustments. Focus was in spec from the beginning. lambda -23, frame 20: start of ramp lambda -21, frame 33: start of science 05:29Z Rotator error out of spec. We stop the drift to correct it. Frame 108, lambda -9.7 ----- 05:34Z Run 4551 - Restart at lambda -12.2 after offsetting the rotator. 05:36Z Ended the drift...didn't allow enough ramp time. ----- 05:40Z Run 4552 - Restart with the proper ramp of lambda -14.7. lambda -12.7, frame 19: start of science. Seeing deteriorated somewhat after frame 225. Seeing was bad after about frame 266. NOTE: A cloud went through the area we were pointing at 06:30Z. All frames from 06:20Z - 06:40Z should be considered suspect. That would correspond to frames 73 - 106. 08:38Z Ended drift at lambda 31, frame 311. Data is only good to lambda 24, frame 266 (poor seeing after frame 266). ----- 08:58Z Since there was not enough time to do Apache Wheel before Moonrise, we switched to spectroscopy. cartridge 7, plate 1394: This plate already had two good exposures. We did a short spiralPattern to find the FK5 star, since Dan recently modified the instrument block. The required offset was 'offsetADR 0 10', or 10 asec in Dec. This plate was finished with one exposure of 900 s. 10:10Z Cartridge 2, plate 1385. Guide stars on goToField, with offsets from previous plate. The arc showed that we were out of focus on r1. We didn't catch this until we were well into the first exposure. With twilight approaching, we chose to finish this plate with the focus unadjusted. Stopping to focus would mean we would get no exposures anyway. We have declared the plate done and asked for another plate to be plugged, but a check of the resolution should be made, and if necessary, the plate should be put back in the database for reobserving. We are concerned by the fact that r1 WSIGMA changed from 0.99 to 1.08 while b1 WSIGMA only went from 1.03 to 1.02. Total exposure time: 2700 s. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4546 22:21Z 22:41Z 100 O -114.08 -109.15 45 ignore 4547 23:06Z 23:24Z 100 O -102.71 -98.21 41 ignore 4548 02:57Z 03:21Z 100 O -44.79 -38.76 54 bias on telescope 4549 03:26Z 04:25Z 24 N -66.30 -51.65 111 science large nu error - bad 4550 04:28Z 05:29Z 24 N -24.89 -9.54 116 science Good science.
