APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday June 18, 2004 (MJD 53175) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta (swing) Steph Snedden Mike Harvanek Visitors: Dan Long Jackie Diehl (NSO) NSO Sac Peak Research Experiences for Undergraduate Program students: Heidi Gerhardt, Towson University Michelle McMillian, Northern Arizona State University Joel Lamb, University of Iowa NSO Sac Peak Student Research Assistant: Leah Simon, Macalester College NSO Sac Peak Research Experiences for Teachers Program: Michael Sinclair, Kalamazoo, MI (Kalamazoo Science Center) Creighton Wilson, Lovelady, TX (Lovelady High School) Brian Lundberg, Utah State University (PhD student) Cheryl Annette Kincaid, (NSO/Air Force Research Laboratory Space Scholar). ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Mostly cloudy most of the night. One plate finished (1032) and good data on another plate (1689). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon =========== The lights in the enclosure were on when I took the flat and arc frames before the exposures for collimation check. The exposures are marked bad as usual. No collimation adjustment required. FYI, the check was carried out at the following temp. tpm_TM_PMSSAvg 15.7143 tpm_TM_TelairAvg.VALA 16.0275 I (ANK) copied the SEGUE catalog koTycho2-1100.fit to /p/tycho2/v1_0/ko as requested by Brian Yanny. The rubber seal between the doghouse and the penthouse on the east side (telescope side) is coming loose. Night ===== Clouds and increasing dust and humidity delayed opening. We stopped ventilating around 0330Z due to high dust counts. The dust counts dropped and we began ventilating again around 0410Z but clouds and increasing winds kept the enclosure on. Coinciding with Dan's arrival on site, the clouds broke up, an angelic choir could be heard and we opened around 0545Z. Please make your checks payable to Dan Long. Plate 1689 (cartridge 9): Guide stars on the gotoField. We obtained 3 good exposures (3300 sec total) before the clouds returned. The return of the clouds may have been related to Dan's defection to the 3.5m. Void those checks now. A fourth exposure was taken in heavy clouds and was declared bad. We did not quite finish this plate. The clouds were still heavy but we mounted cartridge 7 anyway in the hopes things would improve. Plate 1032 (cartridge 7): Cloudy so we needed an FK5 to acquire the field. Previous offsets were cleared and an FK5 was found after an A = -6 offset. The first exposure was ruined by clouds and was declared bad. However, the sky cleared, we obtained 2 exposures (1800 sec total) and when combined with last night's data (53174), this plate was declared done. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4686 22:12Z 22:59Z 100 O -50.35 -38.46 93 ignore 4687 03:44Z 04:12Z 100 O 33.06 39.94 47 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 27291, plate -9999 ------- 22:10 27291 0.0 bias ----- sequence 27292, plate 1032 ------- 22:46 27292 10.0 flat collimation 22:48 27293 2.0 arc " 23:34 27294 2.1 arc " 23:37 27295 2.1 arc " ----- sequence 27296, plate -9999 ------- 00:51 27296 0.0 bias 01:29 27297 0.0 bias ----- sequence 27298, plate 1689 ------- 14.4 16.6 13.9 11.5 06:15 27298 10.0 flat 06:17 27299 2.0 arc 06:38 27300 900.1 target 06:55 27301 900.1 target 07:25 27302 1500.1 target 07:28 27303 10.0 flat 07:31 27304 2.0 arc 08:02 27305 1500.1 target bad - clouds ----- sequence 27306, plate 1032 ------- 8.5 11.8 7.3 10.0 tonight 09:25 27306 10.0 flat 19.6 23.9 16.6 20.4 53174 09:28 27307 2.0 arc ------------------- 10:02 27308 1800.1 target bad - clouds 28.1 35.7 23.9 30.4 DONE 10:20 27309 900.1 target 10:38 27310 900.1 target 10:42 27311 10.0 flat 10:44 27312 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:23Z 9 1689 -3.76 -0.0058 79.52 0.0007 176.50 -0.0012 1.000330 09:31Z 7 1032 40.42 -0.0031 49.69 0.0011 212.94 -0.0150 1.000060 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7664 Stays: JL7665 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:23Z 9 1689 1.00033 -3258 -1579 0 -3 79.5 14.6 19 148 ---- 1.5" 09:30Z 7 1032 1.00006 -593 692 0 41 49.6 13.5 12 169 ---- 1.7" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:46Z 69 26 8 264 (W) 868 - 22:18Z 75 29 16 247 (WSW) 864 - 22:48Z 73 28 14 255 (WSW) 1008 - 23:21Z 74 28 17 267 (W) 1034 - 23:52Z 73 28 13 218 (SW) 1053 - 00:23Z 73 28 5 196 (SSW) 997 - 00:55Z 70 25 4 255 (WSW) 1036 - 01:27Z 70 25 10 227 (SW) 999 - partly cloudy 02:09Z 65 36 6 179 (S) 1423 - mostly cloudy 02:39Z 60 44 19 132 (SE) 2117 - mostly cloudy 03:09Z 59 44 24 128 (SE) 1904 - mostly cloudy 03:39Z 58 44 17 124 (SE) 3625 - mostly cloudy 04:09Z 58 41 27 133 (SE) 1539 - mostly cloudy 04:39Z 58 40 22 123 (ESE) 1240 - mostly cloudy 05:10Z 57 41 19 130 (SE) 914 - mostly cloudy 05:41Z 57 41 21 132 (SE) 1085 - partly cloudy 06:12Z 57 40 21 136 (SE) 1080 - partly cloudy 06:44Z 59 38 12 168 (SSE) 1053 - partly cloudy 07:14Z 59 39 16 170 (S) 1075 - partly cloudy 07:44Z 58 39 15 159 (SSE) 1246 - mostly cloudy 08:16Z 59 38 12 178 (S) 922 - mostly cloudy 08:47Z 56 39 12 176 (S) 840 - mostly cloudy 09:17Z 57 36 13 181 (S) 644 - mostly cloudy 09:47Z 55 39 11 165 (SSE) 749 - mostly cloudy 10:17Z 56 39 15 181 (S) 1585 - partly cloudy 10:49Z 57 39 10 179 (S) 919 - partly cloudy 11:20Z 54 40 12 153 (SSE) 1027 - mostly cloudy ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:30Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 03:30Z Doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed (dust). 04:10Z Doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 05:45Z Enclosure off. 10:50Z Enclosure on, doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed.
