APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday August 11, 2004 (MJD 53229) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Jurek Krzesinski night: Howard Brewington, John Barentine support: French, Craig. ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We battled weather in one form or another for the entire night, failing to finish even one plate (1885) due to its high required S/N; poor, variable seeing; and intermittent waves of clouds. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- There was ptvme problem right after I started imager bias drift. That affected also spectrograph DAs. Reseting astro and photo DAs solved the problem. Ne lamp tests: -------------- I put telescope alt=90 deg, unplugged all Ne lamp power supply but Ne 1 and took 3 arc in a row: sp1> loop i 0 3 {goStare 3 -flavor arc -comment test} Then unplugged, plugged Ne 2 etc. Note, that integration time for each exposure is 3 not standard 2 secs. Ne lamp numbers corespond to couterweight numbers. Dan will look at the frames to see if Ne lamp intensity is varying. Ne 1 on, frames taken: 27812, 27813, 27814 Ne 2 on, : 27815, 27816, 27817 Ne 3 on, : 27818, 27819, 27820 Ne 4 on, : 27821, 27822, 27823 Imager ready, Da ok., telescope ok. spectrograph collimation not checked, because of Ne lamp tests. Oh, ff lamp fuse went off again - French replaced it. Night: ------ Spectro focus was checked and found to be within spec; however, XMAX was adjusted on sp2. See problems section for coll_motor numbers. 0238Z A brief, heavy rain shower. Skies were cloudy and brought intermittent rain until after local midnight. 0610Z With humidity stabilizing and skies clearing, we opened the garage doors partway to ventilate and turned on the fans. 0630Z Rolled back the enclosure. 0645Z Loaded Cart 6, Plate 1885. Stars on goToField. By the time we were in focus and started the first science exposure, clouds had moved in again. Paused the exposure at 0718Z when guide stars started dropping out. Clouds and poor seeing led to low efficiency and a (S/N)^2 of only 1.4 on the first science exposure. Aborted the second science exposure at 0812Z due to insufficient signal. After 0830Z the sky cleared enough to resume science exposures. Due to the length of time between starting science and the anticipated completion of the plate, we did a "mid-cal" set of arcs and flats after finishing the second science exposure at 0923Z. In three science exposures (~4300 s total), we failed to meet the S/N requirement for this plate. 1100Z Put the telescope to bed. We left Cart 6 mounted on the telescope; one more science exposure will finish it. endNight rejoiced. yay. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4765 22:51Z 23:20Z 100 O 12.81 20.00 55 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 27801, plate -9999 ------- 22:30 27801 0.0 bias ----- sequence 27802, plate 1144 ------- 22:34 27802 0.0 bias 22:46 27803 0.0 bias 22:50 27804 0.0 bias 23:13 27805 10.0 flat 23:46 27806 2.0 arc 23:49 27807 2.0 arc 23:52 27808 2.0 arc 23:56 27809 3.0 arc 23:58 27810 3.0 arc 00:01 27811 3.0 arc 00:04 27812 3.0 arc 00:07 27813 3.0 arc 00:09 27814 3.0 arc 00:17 27815 3.0 arc 00:20 27816 3.0 arc 00:22 27817 3.0 arc 00:32 27818 3.0 arc 00:34 27819 3.0 arc 00:36 27820 3.0 arc 00:46 27821 3.0 arc 00:49 27822 3.0 arc 00:51 27823 3.0 arc 02:28 27831 2.1 arc 02:31 27832 2.1 arc ----- sequence 27833, plate 1885 ------- 06:53 27833 10.0 flat 06:56 27834 2.0 arc 07:36 27835 950.4 target 08:54 27836 1500.1 target 09:22 27837 1500.1 target 09:25 27838 10.0 flat 09:28 27839 2.0 arc 10:02 27840 1800.1 target 10:06 27841 10.0 flat 10:08 27842 2.0 arc 10:48 27843 1800.1 target 10:51 27844 10.0 flat 10:53 27845 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 07:09Z 6 1885 121.49 0.0046 62.01 0.0010 -79.48 -0.0136 1.000400 09:46Z 6 1885 202.63 0.0065 78.52 0.0000 26.28 -0.0399 1.000280 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7691 Stays: JL7692 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 07:09Z 6 1885 1.00037 -3653 -1777 100 121 61.9 14.8 8 122 none 2.1 09:46Z 6 1885 1.00028 -2764 -1219 -50 203 78.5 12.2 8 222 none 1.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:12Z 65 50 9 174 (S) 327301 - 22:44Z 66 48 6 172 (S) 290567 - 23:14Z 65 47 9 218 (SW) 309920 - 23:46Z 63 50 6 181 (S) 313389 - 00:18Z 61 47 7 158 (SSE) 310563 - 00:51Z 59 48 9 188 (S) 336057 - 02:46Z 50 42 28 72 (ENE) 298787 - 03:04Z 53 40 28 72 (ENE) 293108 - 03:16Z 53 40 16 82 (E) 291588 - 03:46Z 52 39 14 75 (ENE) 298507 - 04:17Z 49 45 26 85 (E) 281779 - 04:49Z 50 43 23 71 (ENE) 328000 - 05:21Z 50 42 17 70 (ENE) 306568 - 05:53Z 52 40 9 82 (E) 296315 - 06:26Z 54 39 9 87 (E) 260382 - 06:56Z 58 34 8 107 (ESE) 211855 - 07:29Z 60 35 5 100 (E) 195419 - 08:02Z 58 35 4 183 (S) 177565 - 08:34Z 56 36 5 247 (WSW) 191135 - 09:07Z 55 36 0 118 (ESE) 193229 - 09:39Z 55 37 7 257 (WSW) 189080 - 10:12Z 52 37 5 181 (S) 202196 - 10:42Z 53 38 9 182 (S) 196071 - 11:12Z 55 36 10 187 (S) 192707 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 0615Z Started ventilating the enclosure with garage doors open 0635Z Opened enclosure 1100Z Closed enclosure with ventilation off.
