APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday September 13, 2004 (MJD 53262) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- (swing) Stephanie Snedden Mike Harvanek, Jurek Krzesinski Visitors: Mike Montgomery (UT), Atsuko Nitta-Kleinman, Scot Kleinman Anita Berkow Camera operator and Kris Koenig (TV Producers from Chico, CA). ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Plate 1900, 1882, 1880 done based on b1/b2 s/n, but r1 or r2 got S/N <2 in all exposures. Could you check on these please? 1899 - declared done with min s/n in r1 of 49. SecDesMount error: more tests done, but we couldn't triger the error to show up inside enclosure. But on instChange outside enclosure SecDesMount errors apeared every time we changed a cartridge. Steph's theory is that it happens when all 3 axies are moving. Jurek's theory is that it happens when the mirror gets too much fresh air outside the enclosure :). PROBLEMS: --------- monxmike - got crashed twice on Mike and we switched it off. The machine should be inspected. See the log. Spectro DA hunged in the middle of exposure - see the log. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ===== During afternoon checkout I ran the telescope up and down in altitude, using TCC track commands, looking for the SecDesMount out of range errors. I'm afraid that what I found may only confuse the issue further. I did not see the error while moving to high alt values. I DID see it when I initialized the axes for the first time, with the telescope at 30 deg alt. However, when I looked at the mirror numbers, they were not at a limit. Later, there was an axis abort at an alt of about 50, during a slew to a destination alt of 60 deg. The secDesMnt error did NOT occur, but the SecDesMount value was quite different than the normal value. So, the error did not occur with collimate running, but something odd did happen. Next test is to see if it happens with instChange only. Here are the values during the different slews: Foc=-70 Alt D SecDesMount --- ------------- 30 2850 60 9150 80 14950 85 16450 87 17100 90 17100 Foc=+200 30 2800 60 9100 80 14850 85 16350 87 17000 90 17900 Foc=-500 30 2850 Abort at approx. 50 deg, D SecDesMount = -6900 60 9250 80 15050 85 16600 87 17250 90 17250 The rest of afternoon checkout was normal - no problems. Night: ------- While we were closed (dust) Steph moved the telescope up and down to instrument change position useing track commands as well as instChange commands from iop, but she couldn't triger SecDesMount out of range error. She was rotating two axes (alt and rot), but nothing happened. Steph also found out that the spectro LN2 dewar is not building the presure while it's weight is ~200 lb. Mike found out that it's a "black top" dewar (not blue or yellow top, like the others) - maybe presure building system is stuck? We decided to replace the dewar. First half of the night we were closed due to high dust conditions. 05:20Z Dust stayed low for a while (~30 minutes), we opened the telescope. 05:25Z monxmike got frozen on Mike, he's been using mozilla on that computer and probably that caused the trouble - we ended up power cycling monxmike. After that Login window did not showed up, but Scot menaged to find a command which brought the computer into life. Meanwhile Jurek took over and setup telescope on sky from landru. 05:32Z Cart 8 plt 1900 mounted. We didn't see stars on slew due a bunch of clouds which covered the sky when we opened the telescope. Fk5 was found very faint, but exactly at fiber 10 center. 05:40Z Mike reset his sop/iop sessions, got another guider flat and continued with observations. Clouds didn't like that and went away for a while. Seeing: very good (~1.2"). There was no star in fiber #6 (so we disabled it), star in fiber #5 was bright, but the guider couldn't see it. It took us about 30 minutes to setup(!) because the scale was jumping up and down from -0.013 to 0.002. It looks like high pixels around star #5 were missleading the guider. Fiber #5 was disabled and we used scale change which was shown after that. On precalibration clouds builded up again but then the efficiency readings were good enough to proceed with observation. r2 was not showing any good S/N at all while the other chips where fine. Plate done after 3 exposures based on b1/b2 - r2 s/n < 2 in all exposures. Sos warnings on that plate: sdR-r1-00028519.fit: WARNING: Scattered light median = 41 electrons (Warm CCD sdR-r1-00028519.fit: WARNING: Scattered light max = 84 electrons (Warm CCD or sdR-r1-00028519.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 336.853 at 7917.82 Ang (ignoring 5577) sdR-r1-00028520.fit: WARNING: Scattered light median = 32 electrons (Warm CCD sdR-r1-00028520.fit: WARNING: Scattered light max = 63 electrons (Warm CCD or sdR-r1-00028521.fit: WARNING: Scattered light median = 40 electrons (Warm CCD sdR-r1-00028521.fit: WARNING: Scattered light max = 75 electrons (Warm CCD or sdR-r2-00028521.fit: WARNING: Scattered light max = 61 electrons (Warm CCD or On instChange we've got: SecDesMountOutOfRange="FFFTF":: (2004-09-14 07:25:42Z) 07:33Z Cart 6 plt. 1882 mounted. Stars on the slew. 08:10Z In the middle of exposure monxmike got frozen, switching to text mode with the following errors: XSERVER pnic: xserver-I-newclient, host 192.41.211.168 connected with MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 authorization. xserver-W-noextention, client attempted to use non-existent extention "XKEYBOARD" unrecoverable error. Mike setup his sop window on landrupe. We had to logout the ports, then we found out that spectro displays are showing one blue screen (sp1) and the other one just arc - shouldn't be the last thing displayed over a previous exposure, which was read and reduced by sos? Anyway that told us that DAs are hung. We tried to get bias, but it didn't show on spectro displays, so we rebooted spectro DA. There was also spectro server missing, so we start_servers -K and tested spectro with biases. The exposure number has been corrected instruments grabbed, startupGui restored, gflat taken, stars were still sitting in the guider fibers -very good! It took us 30 minutes to recover, but including the loss of 15 minutes on the exposure which wasn't read out, the total of 45 minutes of observeing time was lost. The plate is valid till 10:24, so we started next exposure. Plate done based on exposures in b1,b2, but r1 showed s/n < 2 in all exposures.
