APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday October 8, 2004 (MJD 53287) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek Dan Long Visitors: Jen Adelman-McCarthy John Marriner ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Correlated banding problems with dewar 1 again. Mostly clear to photometric all night but poor seeing for most of the night made for slow going. Still, we finished 1 plate (1555) and obtained good data for 3 others (1960, 1912, 1634). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- The correlated banding problem showed up in dewar 1 again. It first appeared in frames 18 - 22 (maybe 23) and occurred multiple times later on (e.g. frames 51 - 54). This banding problem was visible on the scrolling displays when binning 1x1 and 9x9. Frames 18 - 22 for all dewar 1 chips can be found on phoenix at /data/photo/53287_banding. The wavemax on r2 was in the red and had to be adjusted. Unknowingly, we performed the adjustment and checked the collimation with the slitheads unlatched. When this was discovered, we took another flat and arc and did another goSpecFocus and everything including the collimation was still in spec. So apparently, latching/unlatching the slitheads has little effect on this. Night: ------ Non-photometric so we begin with spectroscopy. Plate 1960 (cartridge 3): Segue101. FK5 needed to acquire the field. Seeing was lousy (>3.0") for much of time. Eight 1200 sec exposures were obtained but 4 of them were declared bad due to insufficient signal in b1 and/or b2. One of the good frames (28767) has insufficient signal in r2 (1.9 where 2.0 was needed) but we still called this good since this is not a segue faint plate. If it turns out that the r signal is important, perhaps this exposure should be declared bad as well. While doing spectro QA, the spectra from the 4 bad exposures were examined and did not appear to be too bad so perhaps some of these exposures are good enough to use. The signal in r1 was anomalously high for all exposures ranging from 11.7 to 68.7. Not sure if SoS was confused or if there was some other problem but we don't believe it was really that high. SoS complained early and often on this plate and there was a large assortment of warnings including numerous whopping fibers and bad sky residuals. Cals were taken after the 6th exposure in response to the large flexure warnings. This plate expired before we could finish it. Plate 1912 (cartridge 5): Segue98. FK5 needed to acquire the field. Four exposures (5400 sec total) were obtained before this plate expired but were not quite enough to finish it. The last exposure finished about 9 minutes after the plate expired. There were half a dozen bad sky/max sky/scattered light warnings in SoS. The postCal request came too late. Plate 1555 (cartridge 8): Lowz74. Guide stars on the gotoField. We found that sp1 had slipped out of collimation shortly after the first science exposure began. The exposure was aborted and after assuming the problem was temperature related, Dan issued a mechPiston -3000. This brought the offending xsigma and wsigma values back into the yellow without doing a full blown collimation check (goSpecFocus followed by collimate) and saved some time. This plate was finished in 6 exposures (7200 sec total). The last exposure finished about 18 minutes after the plate expired. The postCal request came too late. Plate 1634 (cartridge 1): Photoz79. Guide stars on the gotoField. Three exposures (3600 sec total) were obtained before this plate expired but were not enough to finish it. Each of the 3 science exposures had the following SoS warning for r2: Median spatial widths = 1.08 1.10 0.93 1.03 pix (LL LR UL UR) Note that this is very similar to the warning we got on plate 1555 when it went out of collimation. We checked the collimation by doing a postCal. Everything was still in spec but we find this warning to be suspicious. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4871 23:29Z 01:17Z 100 O 79.55 106.46 194 ignore correlated banding ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 28748, plate -9999 ------- 23:30 28748 0.0 bias 23:37 28749 0.0 bias ----- sequence 28750, plate 1917 ------- 23:55 28750 10.0 flat test 23:58 28751 2.0 arc test 00:03 28752 2.1 arc test 00:05 28753 2.1 arc test 00:19 28754 10.0 flat test 00:22 28755 2.0 arc test 00:32 28756 10.0 flat test 00:34 28757 2.0 arc test 00:41 28758 2.1 arc test 00:43 28759 2.1 arc test 01:17 28760 10.0 flat test 01:20 28761 2.0 arc test ----- sequence 28762, plate 1960 ------- 12.0 232.5 12.2 9.3 Not done 01:28 28762 2.1 arc test 01:30 28763 2.1 arc test 02:08 28764 10.0 flat 02:11 28765 2.0 arc 02:34 28766 1200.1 target 02:57 28767 1200.1 target 03:20 28768 1200.1 target bad? 03:43 28769 1200.1 target bad? 04:05 28770 1200.1 target bad? 04:28 28771 1200.1 target bad? 04:32 28772 10.0 flat 04:34 28773 2.0 arc 05:02 28774 1200.1 target 05:25 28775 1200.1 target ----- sequence 28776, plate 1912 ------- 14.1 17.0 12.9 20.3 Not done 05:42 28776 10.0 flat 05:44 28777 2.0 arc 06:08 28778 1200.1 target 06:35 28779 1500.1 target 07:03 28780 1500.1 target 07:26 28781 1200.1 target ----- sequence 28782, plate 1555 ------- 38.3 31.1 39.7 31.9 DONE 07:40 28782 10.0 flat bad - out of collimation 07:42 28783 2.0 arc bad - out of collimation 07:54 28784 10.0 flat 07:56 28785 2.0 arc 08:20 28786 1200.1 target 08:43 28787 1200.1 target 09:05 28788 1200.1 target 09:28 28789 1200.1 target 09:51 28790 1200.1 target 10:14 28791 1200.1 target ----- sequence 28792, plate 1634 ------- 13.5 13.0 15.6 16.4 Not done 10:31 28792 10.0 flat 10:33 28793 2.0 arc 10:57 28794 1200.1 target 11:19 28795 1200.1 target 11:42 28796 1200.1 target 11:45 28797 10.0 flat 11:47 28798 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:06Z 3 1960 43.43 0.0022 62.37 -0.0020 216.01 0.0101 1.000250 05:40Z 5 1912 12.28 -0.0003 46.47 -0.0039 190.35 -0.0094 1.000080 08:00Z 8 1555 -5.07 0.0009 57.14 -0.0052 175.65 -0.0073 1.000130 10:38Z 1 1634 -22.33 0.0010 48.80 -0.0035 161.17 -0.0150 1.000370 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7885 Stays: JL7886 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:06Z 3 1960 1.00025 -2468 -722 175 43 62.5 7.4 27 72 ---- 3.0" 05:39Z 5 1912 1.00008 -790 664 125 13 46.4 6.1 12 110 ---- 1.9" 08:01Z 8 1555 1.00013 -1284 222 125 -5 57.1 5.1 4 127 ---- 1.9" 10:37Z 1 1634 1.00037 -3653 -1760 80 -22 48.8 5.4 5 255 ---- 2.0" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:16Z 50 27 11 73 (ENE) -9999 - 23:48Z 49 28 6 81 (E) -9999 - 00:21Z 47 27 9 85 (E) -9999 - mostly clear 00:52Z 46 29 12 72 (ENE) -9999 - mostly clear 01:24Z 45 31 9 83 (E) -9999 - mostly clear 01:56Z 45 31 9 68 (ENE) -9999 - mostly clear 02:28Z 45 31 24 73 (ENE) -9999 - mostly clear 02:58Z 44 31 12 82 (E) -9999 - mostly clear 03:29Z 45 29 22 74 (ENE) -9999 - mostly clear 03:59Z 44 30 15 80 (E) -9999 - mostly clear 04:30Z 44 29 23 67 (ENE) -9999 - mostly clear 05:02Z 44 30 18 83 (E) -9999 - mostly clear 05:33Z 43 30 11 93 (E) -9999 - mostly clear 06:03Z 42 31 11 85 (E) -9999 - mostly clear 06:33Z 42 30 2 175 (S) -9999 - mostly clear 07:04Z 41 32 6 86 (E) -9999 - mostly clear 07:34Z 41 33 0 160 (SSE) -9999 - clear 08:05Z 41 33 9 142 (SE) -9999 - clear 08:36Z 41 33 1 352 (NNW) -9999 - clear 09:07Z 41 33 1 250 (WSW) -9999 - clear 09:41Z 41 32 2 264 (W) -9999 - mostly clear 10:13Z 40 33 2 104 (ESE) -9999 - clear 10:44Z 41 32 4 255 (WSW) -9999 - mostly clear 11:15Z 41 30 6 142 (SE) -9999 - clear 11:45Z 40 31 6 88 (E) -9999 - clear 12:16Z 42 23 17 76 (ENE) -9999 - clear ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:00Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 01:11Z Enclosure off. 12:00Z Enclosure on, doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed.
