APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday October 12, 2004 (MJD 53291) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: Scot Kleinman, Jurek Krzesinski Support: Connie Rockosi (Lick Observatory) Visitors: John Marriner, Ben Dilday (SNe Team, FNAL/U. Chicago) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Stripe 72 N done from 125 <-> 161.5 in two chunks, ramps taken into account. For the rest of the night we were closed due to high humidity. endNight was left running. Problems (not recovered): Landru crashed, we rebooted the computer, but when it came back to live, only the most left screen pannel was working properly, the rest of them was covered in stripes (or Xserver was in the other mode?). Scot sent a separate email to Craig about the problem. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift =========== The engineers found a defective encoder in the azimuth motor #2 slip detection system and replaced it, so we have a working telescope again - thanks, guys! Nasty banding in bias level coherent in time across all chips in dewar 1 seen in frames 22-24 of the first doghouse bias run 4877, with astroDa having trouble with the level of r1 and g1 until at least frame 27 when it seems to settle down. No problems noticed in other dewars. More of the same around frames 56-62, 71 and on past frame 89. Note that this problem _can_ be seenwwhen scd is set to bin for "All of all chips". I phoned Connie so she could take a look while the drift was running. Spectrographs' focus positions checked and adjusted. See end of log for details. During fiducial checks, the altitude 30deg fiducial was not read while moving up or down, and the 15deg fiducial was not read going up. French thinks this is solvable with fine-tuning of the fiducial tape positions with respect to the new read head but will leave it for next bright time so as to not affect the current pointing model. Otherwise, all fiducial checks were passed. Night ----- 00:07Z Connie called and she said that the bias doesn't look that bad actualy and that we should take the data if we can. 01:20Z We put imager on - it's photometric. Bias drift started (run 4878) and in the middle of the bias drift we slew the telescope to stripe 72 N. We think we didn't see bad bias frames in dewar 1. We started the science scan in twilight: Run 4879 stripe 72 N. By frame 11 lambda was 120.5 and we were in spec since the beginning. Skippy is happy too, however we didn't clear offsets remaing from earlier nights. 01:56Z End of twilight frame 31 lambda: 123 03:38Z rotator rot > 0.04 frame 205 we stopped the run at frame 211, lambda 150.5. Then we cleared offests and scanStripped at lambda 145. 03:48Z We continue the scan (72 N), run 4880, frame 10 lambda 145.7 - seeing good, skippy nuErr=12", and rot error is already 0.03 - we corrected for that immediately since on the last run 4879 (the same stripe) rot error increased rapidly from 0 -> 0.041 ei. within 1.5 hour. After correcting for the rotator and nu err, we ended up in spec. Good seeing, skippy happy, nuErr -2.6" at frame 23 lambda 147.5. 04:43Z The humidity is rising and the dew point depression is dropping rapidly. 05:11Z Frame 128, lambda 163.5 end of 4880 run - high humidity. Telescope closed. 10:28Z Landru crashed. Scot had to reboot the computer. After rebooting, the left-most screen was OK, but the rest were covered with a strange pattern. 11:00Z We started endNight. Imager was put into the doghouse since there is a slight chance of thunderstorms today. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4877 21:57Z 00:40Z 100 O 60.21 101.21 287 ignore 4878 01:24Z 01:39Z 100 O 112.15 116.07 40 bias 4879 01:41Z 03:44Z 72 N 119.92 150.62 219 science 4880 03:48Z ~04:55 72 N 145.7 163.5 128 science ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- run 4878 -
