APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday October 18, 2004 (MJD 53297) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: Mike Harvanek, John Barentine Visitors: Fritz de Jongh (SNe Team) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Cloudy through most of the night, but we got about 3 1/2 hours on the sky toward the end. Accumulated signal on, but did not finish, three plates (1557, 1634, 1781). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift =========== The focus positions of the spectrographs were checked and adjusted, this time at rot=45 as they should be. I had been mistakenly checking at rot=0 to date this run. See end of log for details. The altitude fiducials gave more problems this evening than during recent preflight checks. In particular, the 90deg fiducial seems to give high-valued errors moving down, such that subsequent fiducials are > 600 ticks off (the automatic correction limit). Slewing between 30 and 80 degrees, all fiducial crossings are under the 600 tick limit, but pasing the 90deg fiducial consistently caused problems when slewing back down. Care should therefore be taken when slewing away from instrument change until adjustments are made next bright time. No other anomalies noted. High 1-micron dust counts precluded ventilation before 03:00Z. Night ===== 03:30Z Cracked the garage doors and turned the fans on. Dust had dropped by this stime (and was holding) sufficiently to ventilate. 08:30Z Rolled back the enclosure under rapidly clearing skies. 08:37Z Loaded Cart 8, Plate 1557 (Low z plate). No stars on gotoField, but found with 5" W, 5" S of offsets. We had just enough time before the plate expired to do cals and get two science exposures of 900 s each. Had to abort the first science exposure at 09:04Z due to a bad reading in SoS (see Problems). Fixed the problem, restarted the exposure, The science exposure finished about 10 minutes after the plate expired. but we let it run anyway. 09:38Z Loaded Cart 1, Plate 1643 (photoz79). Stars on gotoField, but it wanted 0.041 for a scale change. As the first science exposure was underway, we had a bad SoS result on the flat run 28922 (see Problems). Resolved the problem and started a new science exposure at 10:08Z. Finished three science exposures and ran 6 minutes past the expiration of the plate for the night. 11:10Z Loaded Cart 9, Plate 1781 (tile 1286, chunk 93). No stars on gotoField but found a catalog star with fk5inFiber. Got three exposures on this plate of 900, 720 and 900 seconds, respectively. We opted to extend the last exposure such that it would not end until 25 minutes past twilight in hopes we might finish the plate. We waited for SoS to return numbers for the final exposure in order to decide whether to declare the plate done; declared it done with the lowest (S/N)^2 at 14.7. 12:30Z Buttoned everything up for the night. endNight rejoiced ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4901 22:08Z 22:49Z 100 O 69.01 79.32 81 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 28908, plate -9999 ------- 22:09 28908 0.0 bias ----- sequence 28909, plate 1917 ------- 22:48 28909 2.1 arc 22:51 28910 2.1 arc 23:06 28911 2.1 arc 23:09 28912 2.1 arc 23:19 28913 10.0 flat 23:21 28914 2.0 arc ----- sequence 28915, plate -9999 ------- 00:48 28915 0.0 bias 01:03 28916 0.0 bias ----- sequence 28917, plate 1557 ------- 6.2 4.0 5.7 3.7 08:53 28917 10.0 flat 08:56 28918 2.0 arc 09:13 28919 10.0 flat 09:16 28920 2.0 arc 09:34 28921 900.1 target ----- sequence 28922, plate 1634 ------- 14.7 10.7 16.5 12.5 09:49 28922 10.0 flat 09:52 28923 2.0 arc 10:04 28924 10.0 flat 10:06 28925 2.0 arc 10:30 28926 1200.1 target 10:48 28927 900.1 target 11:06 28928 900.1 target ----- sequence 28929, plate 1781 ------- 16.5 14.7 17.8 14.7 11:19 28929 10.0 flat 11:22 28930 2.0 arc 11:41 28931 900.1 target 11:56 28932 720.1 target 12:14 28933 900.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 08:50Z 8 1557 -35.79 0.0007 51.54 -0.0051 150.45 -0.0194 1.000100 09:55Z 1 1634 -21.02 0.0015 49.08 -0.0045 162.26 -0.0149 1.000410 11:24Z 9 1781 141.93 0.0004 60.46 -0.0026 -59.24 -0.0149 1.000370 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7965 Stays: JL7966 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:05Z 4 1917 1.00000 0 1231 0 121 30.0 5.9 10 263 -- 1.6 09:55Z 1 1634 1.00041 -4048 -2117 50 -21 49.1 5.4 14 294 -- 1.3 11:24Z 9 1781 1.00037 -3653 -1823 50 142 60.5 5.2 11 265 -- 1.6 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:57Z 43 27 18 254 (WSW) 2586 - MstlyCldy 22:29Z 46 31 18 229 (SW) 3153 - "" 23:02Z 44 29 19 231 (SW) 5314 - "" 23:34Z 42 28 18 232 (SW) 5401 - "" 00:55Z 43 22 12 291 (WNW) 3036 - "" 01:27Z 43 21 12 265 (W) 3098 - "" 01:59Z 44 19 14 271 (W) 1629 - "" 02:31Z 44 19 11 267 (W) 1633 - "" 03:03Z 43 20 12 269 (W) 1908 - "" 03:35Z 42 22 17 230 (SW) 1946 - "" 04:08Z 42 22 9 271 (W) 1875 - "" 04:42Z 43 21 14 318 (NW) 1670 - "" 05:12Z 43 22 15 269 (W) 1475 - "" 05:46Z 43 22 25 292 (WNW) 1314 - "" 06:17Z 43 22 17 276 (W) 1302 - "" 06:49Z 43 20 13 280 (W) 1213 - "" 07:21Z 42 21 13 259 (W) 1324 - PtlyCldy 07:53Z 42 22 15 284 (WNW) 1240 - "" 08:25Z 42 22 15 276 (W) 1097 - MstlyClr 08:57Z 41 23 13 287 (WNW) 1233 - Clear 09:29Z 41 24 15 291 (WNW) 1209 - "" 10:01Z 41 24 15 298 (WNW) 1244 - "" 10:31Z 42 24 13 271 (W) 1211 - "" 11:01Z 41 24 12 268 (W) 1175 - "" 11:31Z 41 24 11 265 (W) 1104 - "" 12:03Z 41 23 14 264 (W) 1055 - "" 12:34Z 40 22 13 268 (W) 1004 - "" ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 03:30Z Fans on, doors cracked 08:30Z Enclosure off, mounted Cart 8 (Plate 1557) 12:30Z Enclosure on, fans off, doors and louvers closed Telescope stowed at 121,30 with Cart 1, Plate 1634 mounted Counterweights at 250, spectro auto-fill reconnected. Aborted the science exposure at 09:04Z. Corrected the motor position on sp2, then did another preCalib at 09:11Z. The fix seemed to work, based on the SoS results on run 28920, so we started up one science exposure even though it was very near the plate's expiry. Spectro Problem #2 ================== Same sort of problem as #1... first science was underway when SoS reported a bad XMIN of -12.4 in b2 for flat run 28917. We aborted the science exposure. Again went through the procedure to fix the bad XMIN and ran another preCalib. Fix appears to have worked, and we started a new science exposure at 10:08Z. All's well that ended well.
