APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday November 29, 2004 (MJD 53339) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Spectro Monthly Checkout ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- I completed most of the spectro monthly checkout but was unable to do the series of dithered spectroscopic flats. There was a problem with the coll_motors of sp1; see log. When installing plate 666 for the spectro darks, cart 08 seemed to stick on the southside as I tried to unmount it; see log. And after the darks, cart 08 did it again when I removed plate 666. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- After I ventilated the enclosure for about an hour, I started the spectro monthly checkout. Unfortunately, I had a few problems. While doing a mechPiston to focus the sp1, coll_motors A, B and C reset to zero; see below. sp1> mechPiston -451 2004-11-30 05:16:21Z: Original command was !ma-451! 2004-11-30 05:16:21Z: expected reply was !ma-451 OK ! motor a: Mechanicals did not respond correctly; response was ma-451 Error: problem with motors (see previous error message) Original motor positions: {a -5199} {b -2205} {c 3700} Current motor positions: {a 0} {b 0} {c 0} So, I did a "mechSend s" and discovered that the motors were in deed at zero; see below. sp1> mechSend s spMechVersion v2_5_0 Bootup 719771169 SpectroID 1 SlitID 40 Air On Shutter_open_sensor Off Shutter_closed_sensor On Left_open_sensor Off Left_closed_sensor On Right_open_sensor Off Right_closed_sensor On Coll_motor_A 0 Coll_motor_B 0 Coll_motor_C 0 Requested_exp.time 0.0 Exp_time_left 0.0 Last_exp.time 0.0 Exp_state None Shutter_open_transit 0.00 Shutter_close_transit 0.00 Coll_motor_A_status 0x85 Coll_motor_B_status 0x85 Coll_motor_C_status 0x85 I did another preCal to see if the motor positions had physically changed, and they had not. The coll_motor readout had only changed. I'm not sure what happened here, but I did not reboot the sp1 Mechs. I also had a problem while putting plate 666 on cart 08 for the spectro darks. After retracting the slit-head latches and unlatching the cart, the cart seemed to stick on its southside. So, I reseated the cart to the scope and lowered it again. This time, all was well. The temp in the enclosure was about -9.5 degrees at the time. After the darks as I removed plate 666, cart 08 did it again, i.e., the southside did not release properly. Because of the earlier problem with the spectro coll_motors, I waited to do the dithered spectroscopic flats last. I issued the "specFlats" command four times but got the same following results: see below. sp1> specFlats Setting up Collimator 2004-11-30 07:40:53Z: Original command was !ma-300! 2004-11-30 07:40:53Z: expected reply was !ma-300 OK ! motor a: Mechanicals did not respond correctly; response was ma-300 Error: problem with motors (see previous error message) Original motor positions: {a 0} {b -1} {c 0} Current motor positions: {a 0} {b 0} {c 0} When I did a trace back, I got the following message: sp1> tb problem with motors (see previous error message) Original motor positions: {a 0} {b 0} {c 0} Current motor positions: {a 0} {b 0} {c 0} while executing "error "problem with motors (see previous error message) Original motor positions: $origStatus Current motor positions: $curStatus"" invoked from within "if !$success { error "problem with motors (see previous error message) Original motor positions: $origStatus Current motor positions: $curStatus" ..." (procedure "specFlats" line 25) invoked from within "specFlats" sp1> I had a similar problem earlier in the night with sp1 while doing a "mechMoveColl 400 -400 0" command. Coll_motor_A moved but motor_B did not. I had to move motor_B with a second command of: mechMoveColl 0 -400 0. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 29538, plate -9999 ------- 02:00 29538 0.0 bias ----- sequence 29539, plate 2058 ------- 02:44 29539 0.0 bias 02:50 29540 10.0 flat 03:07 29541 10.0 flat 03:17 29542 10.0 flat 03:24 29543 10.0 flat 03:33 29544 2.0 arc 03:53 29545 2.0 arc 04:07 29546 2.0 arc 04:20 29547 2.0 arc 04:39 29548 2.0 arc 04:53 29549 2.0 arc 05:03 29550 2.1 arc 05:05 29551 2.1 arc 05:22 29552 10.0 flat 05:25 29553 2.0 arc 05:32 29554 0.0 bias 05:34 29555 0.0 bias 05:36 29556 0.0 bias 05:38 29557 0.0 bias 05:41 29558 0.0 bias 05:43 29559 0.0 bias 05:45 29560 0.0 bias 05:47 29561 0.0 bias 05:49 29562 0.0 bias 05:51 29563 0.0 bias 05:53 29564 0.0 bias 05:55 29565 0.0 bias 05:58 29566 0.0 bias 06:00 29567 0.0 bias 06:02 29568 0.0 bias 06:04 29569 0.0 bias 06:06 29570 0.0 bias 06:08 29571 0.0 bias 06:10 29572 0.0 bias 06:12 29573 0.0 bias 06:14 29574 0.0 bias 06:17 29575 0.0 bias 06:19 29576 0.0 bias 06:21 29577 0.0 bias 06:23 29578 0.0 bias 06:59 29579 0.0 dark 07:19 29580 0.0 dark 07:37 29581 0.0 dark ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 01:24Z 11 7 5 354 (NNW) 282 - 01:57Z 12 4 8 359 (NNW) 218 - 02:27Z 12 1 4 346 (NNW) 180 - 02:59Z 12 3 6 26 (NNE) 287 - 03:29Z 11 1 8 2 (N) 237 - 04:01Z 11 0 9 353 (NNW) 159 - 04:33Z 11 0 8 12 (NNE) 149 - 05:06Z 11 -1 8 18 (NNE) 199 - 05:38Z 10 0 7 344 (NNW) 153 - 06:11Z 9 1 0 343 (NNW) 167 - 06:43Z 9 1 5 358 (NNW) 234 - 07:15Z 9 0 10 357 (NNW) 247 - 07:45Z 9 1 12 16 (NNE) 169 - 08:18Z 9 0 6 23 (NNE) 149 - 08:48Z 9 0 7 359 (NNW) 173 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:30Z Doors and louvers opened, fans on 06:00Z Doors and louvers closed, fans off telescope at 121,30,00 LN2 connected and turned on.
