APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday December 13, 2004 (MJD 53353) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Howard Brewington Atsuko Nitta ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Photometric and cold. The second half of the night was lost to humidity. o no ptvme problem tonight! o First scanStripe hung for about 5min and we saw many "tccPutAndWait finished trying listenerToTCC" in the murmur log. This usually takes about 5 min or so to time out during which we cannot do a drift. Any idea on what to do? o Frustrating night with about 70-80frames of good data followed by poor seeing. o 90S 80 frames of good data (lam=166--> 174.5). We were looking low and towards ELP which hurt us both in seeing and sky background leve, we think. We called this run unknown quality. o 7S 2x70frames of good data (lam -162 --> -150.5, -144.5 --> -134.0). We called this run also unknown. (The seeing blew up twice during this run.) o 1356S 49 --> 56.3 good and then the seeing blew up again. o endNight is still running. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Checkout went smoothly. No spectro focus check as imager was mounted. Since imager was mounted checkout bias is a usable bias. Night: ------ We start with the imgaer. Around 01:02Z Howard's scanStripe command hung again after the telescope arrived to its destination. The same as two nights ago -- we saw many many "tccPutAndWait finished trying listenerToTCC" in the murmurlog and the iop prompt did not return until it timed out: 2004-12-14 01:06:51Z sdsshost IDA 39837 TEXTONLY tccPutAndWait timed out waiting for the TCC to complete command track 335.49737072,-17.57691773 FK5 /rotty=obj /rota=0 /rot... This wasted our time since we have to wait for about 5 min until it times out and trying to do a drift from another while waiting for time out does not seem to work. Run 5064 SEGUE 90S ==================== Seeing good from the beginning. nuErr=13" so we put offset. Frame 22 in focus. Probably due to starting before twilight is over or the moon has set, we are getting sky watcher errors. Moon sets about 20 min after twilight. We have ample time to setup. Frame 78 Longitude 164.0 Ramp start. Moonset. Even after twilight and moon set, we are getting sky watcher error. The i chips are getting many errors. We are ALT=35 or so and pointing towards El Paso. Is it possibly from the ELP air glow? We checked solar activity on the www site, but we did not find anything to indicate the sun has been more active than usual. Frame 150 Longitude 174.7 From here the seeing went bad. It went back to acceptable momentarily, but not for long. We decided to move to a different st5ripe because we were pointing less than ALT=35deg. A higher ALT stripe might be better. We declared this run unkonwn. We have about 80 frames of good data according to SkentJr., slightly less than what the pipeline prefers. But maybe it is useable. 3.5m is still getting subarcsec seeing. We should be ale to do as good if not better. Run 5065 SEGUE 79 S ===================== ALT=63. Much better seeing. seeing is good from the beginning. Frame 17 in focus Frame 12 skippy in spec. Frame 31 Longitude -162.0 start of science. we are not seeing sky watcher errors any more. Maybe it was ELP sky that was giving us the sky warning during the last run. Frame 108 Longitude -150.5 seeing goes bad. :( Frame 148 Longitude -144.5 seeing goes back to good. Frame 218 Longitude -134.0 seeing goes bad again :( The seeing did not improve enough. Frame 265 Longitude -127.0 we ended the drift. We got about 2x70 frame science with good science. We called this run also unknown quality in case the good part of the data is usable. Run 5066 SEGUE 1356S ======================== seeing is good from the beginning, in focus from the beginning. Frame 32 Longitude 49.0 start of science Around 07:00Z The humidity is now around 3C. We keep close eyes. Frame 81 Longitude 56.3 seeing is bad. 07:10Z We close due to humidity. Top of dog house, the wind baffles were still dry, but there were some moisture on the flat field screens. 11:45Z We give up and start endNigh. We put the imager in the doghouse and put cart2 on the telescope (early night plate). 12:00Z Hercules called, as always, to make sure his baby (telescope) is happy. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===---
