APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday March 27, 2005 (MJD 53457) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: Mike Harvanek - Spectro Monthly Checkout John Barentine - ET Visitors: Jackie Diehl (aka the Easter Bunny) Jurek Krzesinski The Extremely Patient ET Team: Jian Ge (UF) Julian Van Eyken (UF) Bo Zhao (UF) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Spectro monthly checkout and Et after that. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Spectro Monthly Checkout was performed. Everything looked normal. All tape drives (12 imaging, 2 spectro, 1 mt, 1 spare) were cleaned. Bright time MJD directories were moved from /astrolog to /skycat/oplogs/astrolog and all data directories were cleaned. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Easter Dinner Menu ------------------ Glazed Ham Fresh Boiled Asparagus Homestyle Fried Potatoes Peach Cobbler Spectro Monthly Checkout: ------------------------- Good flat after repositioning: frame 31517 Good arc after repositioning: frame 31518 It was fairly warm tonight. Ambient telescope temp on the forks was about +4.5 C and both mirrors were within +/- 1 C of ambient so the spectro collimation was set to a colder temp. The moves requested by collimate AFTER collimation were: sp1; mechPiston 4960 sp2; mechPiston 3368 Thus, the spectrographs should be in collimation for temps from about 0 C to 5 C. Final collimator positions: im> caget tpm_TM_PMSSAvg tpm_TM_TelairAvg.VALA tpm_TM_PMSSAvg 4.65143 tpm_TM_TelairAvg.VALA 4.4175 sp1 Coll_motor_A -2202 Coll_motor_B -2208 Coll_motor_C -817 sp2 Coll_motor_A 1002 Coll_motor_B -402 Coll_motor_C -1700 The first set of dithered flats failed after flat 5: Finished with specFlat 5 of 7. Setting up Collimator 2005-03-28 06:18:53Z: Original command was !ma100! 2005-03-28 06:18:53Z: expected reply was !ma100 OK ! motor a: Mechanicals did not respond correctly; response was ma100 Error: problem with motors (see previous error message) Original motor positions: {a -2090} {b -2097} {c -922} Current motor positions: {a -2001} {b -2097} {c -922} The collimator motors were returned to their original positions for a second attempt at dithered flats. This time the dithered flats succeeded (frames 31526 - 32532) but after these flats completed, sp1 collimator position A read -1 instead of -2200. Collimator B and C of sp1 were in their proper positions and all 3 motors of sp2 were in their proper positions so it was unclear if there was a communication problem with sp1 motor A (i.e., it was at the proper position but due to a communications problem it was reading 0 and a small drift made it -1) or if it was actually -2200 units out of position. Subsequent flats and arcs showed that the motor was indeed -2200 units out of position. This was corrected. Note that the 2 arcs directly following the dithered flats (frames 31533 and 31534) are bad because of sp1 motor A being out of position. Arc frames 31539 and 31565 are good though. 25 biases: frames 31540 - 31564 Frame 31555 (all 4 cameras) was displayed and visually inspected. Everything looked normal. Bright time MJD directories were moved from /astrolog to /skycat/oplogs/astrolog and all data directories were cleaned. ET Phone Home, Your Telescope Is Ready -------------------------------------- After a succession of disappointing nights lost to weather and equipment issues, we finally have some on-sky time. We pulled the building right around 10:00Z and were on the first ET field shortly thereafter. 10:30Z Cart 6, Plate 8006. No stars on gotoField but we think we understand why (plate centers were originally calculated incorrectly). The very first attempt at using suggested offsets to compensate for the error landed guide stars in their fibers. A large scale change (0.037) was suggested and applied. We tried exposures at different locations (nominal field center, offset to guide stars, offsets calculated by the ET team) without conclusive success in locating their stars. By 11:20Z the telescope was very low in altitude (below 30 degrees) so we elected to change cartridges. 11:30Z Cart 4, Plate 8004. We went straight to the calculated offset position on this plate and got nothing -- no guide stars and no signal on the ET instrument. I did an fk5InFiber to look for a reference star and did not find it. It took three laps of spiralPattern to find the FK5 star at an offset of A=-16 D=-20. Went back to the field, found guide stars. No signal on ET. We tried several additional ten-minute exposures well into twilight with mixed results. endNight was run on the cloudy night tapes and rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): NO UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 03:36 31500 0.0 bias ----- sequence 31501, plate 1688 ------- 03:45 31501 10.0 flat positioning 03:57 31502 10.0 flat positioning 04:02 31503 2.0 arc positioning 04:11 31504 10.0 flat positioning 04:14 31505 2.0 arc positioning 04:29 31506 10.0 flat positioning 04:32 31507 2.0 arc positioning 04:42 31508 2.1 arc collimation 04:44 31509 2.1 arc collimation 05:01 31510 10.0 flat collimation check 05:04 31511 2.0 arc collimation check 05:08 31512 2.1 arc collimation 05:10 31513 2.1 arc collimation 05:16 31514 10.0 flat collimation check 05:26 31515 10.0 flat collimation check 05:30 31516 2.0 arc collimation check 05:36 31517 10.0 flat final positioning -
