APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday May 8, 2005 (MJD 53499) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta (volunteer swing) Mike Harvanek Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Plates 1826, 2011, 2030 declared done. Imaged strip 18N from lambda = 12 to lambda = 62 plus ramps under good seeing...subarcsec for much of the time. Problem with spectro bias -init, problem with cloud camera, problem with VNC connection. All problems detailed in log, and all dealt with, if not completely understood. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ----- During Mike's bias -init he had a problem which is detailed in the problems section. His second bias -init was okay. Although the satellite image was promising, we saw structure in the western sky and marginally non-photometric conditions in the cloud camera, so we decided to start with a cartridge until we could see whether conditions would improve or deteriorate. The DIMM finder was realigned, and with its new power supply it is working just fine. Night: ------ 02:42Z Cartridge 1, plate 2011 One guide star at the edge of a fiber. After an offset, the rest appeared. The first exposure was taken during the last twenty minutes of twilight. During the exposures, the seeing deteriorated and waves of structure (dust? smoke?) passed through. We decided to stay with spectroscopy for the moment. This plate was declared done with a total exposure time of 3000 s. 04:12Z Cartridge 3, plate 2030 Guide stars on goToField. Seeing stayed variable until the last exposure, when it started to settle. Since we weren't sure it would last, we decided to go for one more plate while we monitored seeing and sky. Finished this plate with a total exposure of 3000 s. Note that the seeing and sky sigma excursions were concurrent. 05:27Z Cartridge 6, plate 1826 Guide stars on goToField. Seeing and sky conditions stabilized while observing this plate. Finished the plate with a total exposure time of 2400 s. 06:30Z It's time for imaging! We have photometric skies and DIMM reports good seeing. 06:54Z Run 5308. We start imaging on 18N, start lambda of 6. This is a survey (not SEGUE) stripe. Seeing and pointing good from the beginning. 07:04Z Frame 29, lambda 9.5 - start of ramp. 07:14Z Frame 45, lambda 12 - start of science. We drifted along with one seeing excursion centered around frame 169, lambda 29, but SeeingRun called it good throughout. From approx. 09:20Z to 10:00Z, the cloud camera stopped. After checking to see that the camera was running (both with checkcam and listening to the camera)and after issuing two scanstops and scanstarts, we started getting images to hoggpt and our browsers again. After the first scanstop and scanstart, checkcam said it was not running (?). After the second scanstop and start, it reported it was running. We believe that it remained photometric throughout the gap in the data. At roughly the same time we noticed that the VNC window to the DIMM was frozen. The VNC server on the laptop was not responding. Since we were still getting seeing data to the APO weather page, we didn't worry about it. The VNC server could have been down for quite a while before we noticed it. 10:33Z Frame 379, lambda 62 - end of science 10:44Z Frame 396, lambda 64.5 - end of ramp. 10:53Z Run 5309 - bias on telescope. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame
