APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday June 3, 2005 (MJD 53525) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Jurek Krzesinski Atsuko Nitta ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We imaged all night. 39N Lambda 36 --> 45 17N Lambda 0 --> 18 1020S Mu 241 --> 251 1060S Mu 247 --> 257, 267 --> 274 Note the skippy output which said we were not pointing correctly around frame 170 or so up to 200 or so (one skippy report saying nuErr is 16000". Moth ? confused software? endNight is still running. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ---------- During checkout, AZ brakes refused to come off. JB notified and he had to replace the PLC board. The handpaddle to move the instLift did not allow us to move the lift down after we put the imager on. JB swapped the the paddle with the spare. A loose connection? JB says he found nothing loose. He cleaned the switch contacts. This seems to have fixed the problem. We will use the old paddle tonight. We did not do spectro checkout this afternoon. We mounted the imager before sunset as the sky looks photometric. Since we need to image the survey stripe we need to do this dark run just as the twilight ends, we decided to put the imager on and start with imaging although we were not as sure of the seeing due to the wind (SW direction with 28 m/h gusts). Night ----- 5373 Bias on telescope ------------------------- We started DIMM successfully before twilight ended. :) 5374 17 N ----------- We start ramp/setup in twilight. We must be at the beginning of the stripe when twilight ends to finish this stripe. skippy is good from the beginning. The seeing is "bad"... :( DIMM says it is about 1" or less, and 3.5m is getting 1.4". The watcher shows that 1/3 of the chips are in spec and 2/3 are not. It is frustrating since the seeing so very close to being able to take usable data. DIMM software has lost its connection to the telescope. So we closed the software, power cycled Meade and restarted again. We gave up at 04:15Z (about 30 min after twilight ended). We will try 39N. Maybe the seeing will be better there? The altitude for 39N will be higher. 5375 39 N ---------- We re now at alt 50 rather than alt 40 as we were in the previous stripe. We were in focus the whole time, and skippy was good from the beginning. Frame 40 Longitude 36.1 Frame 101 Longitude 45.1 Finished this stripe! 5376 17N --------- We will try to do second part of 17N. Maybe we will have better luck this time? We are at Alt 45. Frame 10 Longitude -2.0 Seeing is holding at acceptable level. :) :) Frame 108 Longitude 12.8 Seeing goes to good. Frame 140 Longitude 17.4 Seeing goes to acceptable. Frame 144 Longitude 18 --end of science This run did not show up in logTool's imaging summary section. 5377 SEGUE 1020 S -------------------- Skippy is good from the beginning and seeing is good too! Frame 27 Longitude 242.1 Start of science Frame 90 Longitude 251.7 Seeing turns bad So we waited for a bit, but the seeing did not improve. So we decided to try another stripe with higher ALT (we are currently at 45deg). Again in hopes that that will improve. We think the data is usable up to frame 102 (mu=253) although SoKent called the seeing bad from frame 90. 5378 1060S ------------ Frame 10 245.3 Mu244 At 9Z, we noted that DIMM quit observing 2 hrs ago. Since we only have 1hr and 10min before twilight, we will not try to reset it. The software is not responding to any of our mouse clickings. Sigh. Frame 49 Longitude 251.1 Seeing is acceptable Frame 69 Longitude 254.1 Seeing is back to good. Frame 90 Longitude 257.4 Seeing is BAD now! We have about 40min to twilight. So we will just sit on this stripe to see if seeing will improve. Frame 160 Longitude 267.7 Seeing is good again! Frame 203 Longitude 274 Twilight starts. So we will call this end of science and run 2deg in twilight for ramp down. Frame 189 Skippy reports that our pointing is suddenly bad. We went from Tehetaf of -0.00227 to -0.198287. So we ran on Frame 171 for 4 frames and the muErr is over 20000 and nuErr is 16000. It does not make sense. So I run it on Frame 207 for 4 frames which looks like all is well (nuErr at -1.7 and Thetaf -0.0087). Please see the skippy section for more information. We called this run acceptable. 10:45Z While moving the telescope to Alt=6 to close, there was an ALT slip event. DIMM software was responsive at the telescope. So we did normal end of the night shutdown. I wonder why it did not respond from the control room when we tried??? endNight is running at the time we send this nightLog. Since we did not know if norm will come to site when there is no plugging to be done, Jurek replaced the imager dewar before going to bed. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5372 03:02Z 03:07Z 100 O 7.27 8.71 22 ignore 5373 03:08Z 03:25Z 100 O 9.02 13.11 41 bias 5374 03:26Z 04:14Z 17 N -31.09 -19.06 93 science 5375 04:20Z 05:25Z 39 N 31.14 47.37 122 science logTool did not record run 5376 5376 17 N -2 18 science 5377 07:02Z 08:16Z 1020 S 54.22 52.04 136 science 5378 08:19Z 10:26Z 1062 S 59.90 91.69 225 science ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5374 9 4 43 -7.900 0.173 -1.100 0.193 -0.00845 258 45 5374 62 4 61 -7.600 0.132 -1.300 0.130 -0.00803 259 46 5375 22 4 71 -5.800 0.138 4.600 0.135 0.00252 41 57 5375 74 4 81 -6.700 0.134 5.100 0.173 0.00479 53 61 5376 12 4 57 -6.600 0.183 -1.600 0.168 -0.00922 261 46 5376 64 4 56 -5.300 0.143 -1.600 0.146 -0.00929 261 46 5376 116 4 37 -5.600 0.112 -2.100 0.098 -0.00927 260 46 5377 9 4 54 -1.400 0.183 -1.300 0.125 0.00056 204 55 5377 62 4 46 -1.700 0.177 -1.000 0.122 -0.00093 203 51 5377 112 4 45 -1.700 0.206 -0.400 0.160 -0.00102 203 46 5378 18 4 71 -5.600 0.145 -1.000 0.116 0.00045 235 61 5378 69 4 92 -4.600 0.201 -0.600 0.130 -0.00085 232 59 5378 138 4 105 -3.400 0.196 -0.600 0.134 -0.00227 228 55 5378 189 4 11 7.600 2.949 12.400 1.797 -0.19287 225 51 <-ACK!
